Well, I wouldn't considering it "cheating", just "boring".

Not really, but I usually try to avoid it.. Unless I am much stronger than the others and wishes to gather ALL my units just to make sure the corpses of my eniemies are torn apart, eaten, digested, processed, and so on until they have made a full circle and have become parts of a tree. But I try to avoid it and instead rush things.

The way I "cheat" is using save/restore.

I love the really big fights, or any fight where I'm completely outnumbered. There are fights I've replayed probably 20 or more times. I try to win fights that's can't be won. I keep reloading and trying again because I don't care about the whole game. I just care about that one fight and the challenge of winning it. To me that fight IS the whole game. That's what I like to do, but some people would call it cheating.

Good point. There's nothing better than walking over your oppponent with hideous amounts of units.....especially if you have nothing better to do. The town portal tactic did take away some of the experience. Maybe I should of been stronger and developed other tactics.

I wouldn't say that was cheating. Part of the game is encountering a wall, then trying different tactics to climb it. You wouldn't be able to do that without the save/restore. I came across a massive army that just kept beating me. Eventually I had the idea of the Earth Elemental/Sacrifice combo. It was all sorted after that but I needed to reload a couple of times to think of it.

That´s why the campaigns of SoD are way better and challenging.
The "wait and gather big amount of troops" tactic will fail in 11 out of 10 cases.., coz AI is too strong.
Play them all on 200%, and u get some nice challenges. I´m currently playing them again, and i have to say, they really make u sweat sometimes....
The first 4 campaigns are done, now i´m doing the 5th (Unholy Alliance). The toughest scenario for me so far was the 3rd scenario of the "Hack&Slash" campaign...died several times before i could make it. Thant with 100 spellpoints week 2 can be a pain in the ***...

I've got to admit it (though I'm deeply ashamed) I haven't attempted any of the campaigns on a harder difficulty setting. I'll definitely try now though and let you know how I get on.

@angelito: The first time I played SoD I finished the Hack & Slash-campaign directly. I didn't have to replay or even load a game. I just walked through it. The second time I played it, a couple of months after the first round, I got REALLY stuck. I was probably VERY lucky the first time.

I love SoD. The campaigns are soooo good. If you haven't played them yet, make sure you do.

With all scenarios on 200%?
Good work then.....

Nah, not 200%. More like 150%. I'm still kinda proud of it though, even if I never achieved it again.

Ah...ok. I really would have wondered if anybody made this campaign on the first try on 200% without any restarts.

I just tried the Hack & Slash Campaign at 200% without any restarts. I got my *** kicked in week 3.

I remember that map from before. The first time I played it I had a tough time, even with save/restore. The next couple times it went pretty easy. I think there's a lot of luck with that map. With only one hero it makes a big difference which direction you happen to take and where you are when the AI enters your zone. The first time without knowing the map, I think it's pure luck if Hack is in the right place at the right time.

Going back to try again and maybe live this time.

Whoa, I just started the SoD campaigns again, and they're actually harder that I remember. 8|
Might have something to do with the fact that I haven't played Heroes III for a year now. I hope I get back in the groove soon.

Good to hear that there are greater challenges out there. I've just been battling through the namesake AB Campaign (8 scenarios playing Castle, Inferno and lots of Conflux) in AB and rarely needed to reload more than once. The AI is set to impossible for the last couple of scenarios. But with the map design putting the computer opponent at a starting disadvantage, where is the challenge? The final chapter gives Gelu, Catherine and Roland SIX hugely developed Conflux towns to start with. Gelu had Town Portal at this stage and was of course wielding the blade. So basically Catherine and Roland stay protected close to home while Gelu portals around collecting all the troops. I left it with Firebirds rather than Phoenixes, to save on Mercury. The end fight with Xeron would have been even smoother if I'd gone for Magma Elementals - instead of the Sharp Shooters that were quickly taken out by Efreet and Devil masses - but there was not real challenge in this. Ended around day 45, clearly short of the limit. Bought Shackles of War at the black market. Since losing a fight means losing the scenario anyway, might as well kill the other heroes for good and collect their artefacts.

I found the 5th scenario 'Return of the King', with strong AI and an even number of towns most rewarding. There were pretty strong daemon armies coming from portals right on my own turf early on. One decisive fight left Roland with his armies diminised to 10% but just on top of the opposition. I barely could believe my luck. That's the kind of scenario that makes HOMM III so rewarding - even in 2007.

Do you actually get anything for completing campaigns? I realize there's the experience itself and/or bragging rights. But do you unlock any special heroes or anything like that?

The prize you get for finishing 6 campagins (RoE, AB , and SoD) is ..... tadaaaam... another campaign (one for RoE, one for AB, one for SoD)

Notice tho, bonus campaigns in RoE and AB are pretty much "off topic" and they dont interfere in the main stories.
However, SoD bonus campaign is a must since it is direct link to happenings in RoE.

PS. to add to thread starters situation. You can use 1 hero in pretty much all 3 starting campaigns of RoE. However, i find it most convenient to use 1-2 main heroes + 1-2 secondary heroes (yes, i know that would be suicide in multiplayer, but this is single player convenience thing).
You surely wont need 8 heroes, especialy if you are uncomfortable with having to move and level cap all 8 of them .

Hi Solipso,

To me, the most interesting campaign is the custom made by players e.g. Eternal Love campaign by Hans C. That's what I call campaign.

i have to agree whole heartedly. Although sod and ab were a challenge i play all maps and campaigns on impossible difficulty, this gives me a challenge and is very entertaining.

Now Eternal love Campaign im doing that at the moment and its by far the hardest map/campaign i have ever had to do. I am only on map 3 of the campaign and the advantage the Ai has at the start is insane.

What gives me entertainment is retrying the map over and over until i beat the suckers. Knowing that when i finally do i will move on to map4/8 and will have to do it all again lol.

anyway the Campaigns that come with the games are great but none will prepare you for how difficult Eternal love is.
