Poll Question:
Tekken or Soul Calibur?

The two big Namco fighting games.  I'm going to skip all the unnecesary details because no one reads them anyway...  So which one do you think is better?  I'll give my opinion later, though it's kind of obvious what I will say.

Soul Caliber all the way.  I was never a big Tekken fan.

50-50... Well, "Soul Edge" was actually the first Namco game i had the pleasure of playing and as a result i'm still a SC fan today (Ivy ftw ).

However, Tekken has its own style and although i have never played T1 or T2, i've definately played the crap outta T3, TTT, T4, T5 and T5DR (probably spent enough money at the arcades to send the owner's daughter to college). The only downside is at it seems juggles are way to overpowered in some instances.. *cough*stevefox*cough*.

Okay, I've owned a bunch of fighting games starting with the old Mortal Kombats and all I have to say is that I don't like them.  They either get really repetative or are almost impossible to truly master.  Soul Calibur's execution is almost flawless.  If you're playing against new players (which I am a perpetual member of) it's easy to learn the game without having to resort to button mashing.  The moves are generally easy to carry out, without huge combo chains, but experienced players still get more out of playing the game longer.  Most fighting games aren't like that.  Case in point, Dead or Alive.  While it's a great game for those who know how to play it, it's almost impossible when you start.  It's hard to pick up DOA and expect to be able to play it well.  On the other spectrum, Capcom style fighting games typically degrades into a button mashing fest.  There are some power moves that you need to know, but other than that, you just go at the controller (I had an ex girlfriend who hates video games, but loved Capcom fighters).
The graphics in Soul Calibur are also hard to match.  Yeah, DOA looks nice, but it looks like it was made by hormonal teenage boys (the extreme volleyball game proves my point).  Soul Calibur has some of the same aspects (Taki) but IMO they detract less from the game.

Tekken was the lord of arcade fighting games when Tekken 3 was out. The fighter, King, was my favourite character. Tekken 2 was also ok. But i didn't like the new ones 4 and 5. So i'll go with Soul Calibur, because i enjoyed two titles in the serie, SoulCalibur 2 and 3, whereas i only enjoyed one title in Tekken.

But if you ask me Mortal Kombat beats them all!

Today is work-is-so-slow-and-boring-that-I'm-going-to-sit-here-and-post-until-I-run-out-of-posts day!

Yeah, I didn't even give my own opinion, did I?    Meh.  Tekken is a good series, but after playing Soul Calibur, I can never go back to a game that doesn't have a block button.  This doesn't mean I'm a passive player (not at all ), just that holding the back button often interferes with my aggressive style.

Soul Calibur is often criticized as being the ultimate button masher game, with Maxi as the ultimate button masher character.  This is true, but only to an extent.

I feel like most of the players who get tripped up by button mashers are intermediate players.  By intermediate players, I mean people who know the basics, can win against the AI most of the time, but have not (obviously) "mastered" their character.  These people have a set routine of moves that they like to use, and often wait until the right time to execute them.  However, button mashers are somewhat unpredictable, never stop attacking, and therefore, never give these intermediate players the opening to start their attacks.  This is why I think button mashers can win.

On the other hand, the more advanced players know the timing and range of their attacks and usually can choose the best one to interrupt the mashers.  And since mashers never block (go figure), it's easy to follow up at a counter and then combo them to death.

To the Soul Calibur players (who have read this far into the post)...  Out of curiosity, which character(s) do/did you use for each game of the series?

I've always been a Sophie player.  Back in Soul Calibur, I used Sophie, Maxi, and Taki.  For SCII, I was only Maxi and sometimes Taki.  For SCIII, I'm back to Sophie and Taki and I've picked up Xianghua.

Just a random story on how I got into SC...  My parents and I went to Las Vegas quite a few years ago, and since I wasn't allowed in the casinos at the time, I went downstairs to play in the arcade.  I saw this one guy playing Soul Calibur, and OMG HE WAS AMAZING.  I've never been a big fan of fighting games before, but after watching him, I felt compelled to give this game a try.  I first picked up Seung Mina (because she was the prettiest ) but I sucked with her.  Then I picked up Sophie (because she was the second prettiest ) and I rocked with her.    The guy came back a while later and I watched him PWN like 20 people in a row.  After that, I promised myself that I'm going to get this game some day and master Maxi and Taki (the two characters he used), and the week after that, I bought a DC.    I've been addicted to the series ever since, and I've entered a total of 4 tournaments.  I got first place once, second place, twice, and third place once.  My winnings totaled 40 dollars and an oversized T-shirt.

I'm a hard core Soul Calibur player.  The only time I got to play the first in the series was on a cruise ship around the age of 10, so I barely remember it.  I do remember that I ended up using Siegfried and thought he was a girl, but later switched over to Maxi and Taki after realizing I couldn't get away from my brother's constant smash-me-to-the-ground move with Siegfried.

For Soul Calibur 2, I often used Charade, partly because I'm a gambler like that, and partly because I was fairly good at many different styles.  Eventually, I mastered Ivy after learning about her deadly moves (i.e. Calamity Symphony).  I always liked her hair too, so that was fun.

Soul Calibur 3 I was devastated to find out how horrible they had made Ivy, but I absolutely adore Tira.  They brought Siegfried back, so I had fun figuring out his gender once and for all XD.  I still like using random characters, cuz I'm good with most of the styles.  I suck with Cassandra/Sophitia, as well as Astaroth.  I can play most others well.  I hate playing Kilik though...he's so cheap XD.

I never really played these button bashers, but before when I stayed at a mates place he had a playstation and we rented Mortal Kombat haha...

I played the demo of Soul Caliber, the new one I think, where you only have two characters, and I went the girl and just hit B over and over and no one can do anything, perfect victory every time.

I think Tekken's characters are pretty boring though. That's all I care about in a fighting game.

Tekken's first 3 versions were good but the new ones suck.
Soul Calibur is a good one but since DOA is an option it doesn't stand a chance.

EDIT:I own none of these but I have played them with my friends on their maschines so I might not know all secrets or superkombos which might change the situation.
