Can this mod be made?

Hi,

Firstly, kudos to all the modders out there who have made HoMM5 an even better, immersive experience. It's amazing the amount of mods that have come out so soon, thanks to all of you.

I have a question about whether the following mod can be made:

Currently, most players use one Hero; though several Heroes will be made for scouting and muling, because there is no party-size cap it bodes well as a best strategy to keep as many units under one Hero's control.

A previous title, King's Bounty, implemented party size caps. A Hero could not have more than X units within, which forced more Heros on the map per side that were used equally.

I think this would be a great mod, if it were possible. At present, the game is more a RPG than strategy game because of only having one unit that is considered your 'force'. But having more Heros that were a worthy batallion, you could use more tactics in your offensive and defensive strategies, instead of having your main run back and forth dealing with everything.

I realize this opens up much discussion of balance, as unit costs are designed to provide weaker units with greater quantities to compensate. Thus, one would need to have faction specific caps to consider as well.

At this point though, I'm wondering if any of this is even possible. Do any of you modding gurus think this can be done, or is it hard coded into the game?

I guess the old adage, 'no news is good news' is not too applicable here.

Even if it was possible you rather wouldn't find many people interested in it. People just love to have one super hero with huge army and forcing them to split army would spoil the game. You should rather make maps where people benefit from splitting armies into multiple heroes.

And to answer your question: yes, it can probably be done, but I have no idea how and it surely won't be easy [more like making that script language in WoG].

I think more people would be interested in it than you think. Just about every TBS game is premised on this point. I'll use Warlords, Age of Wonders, Civilizations, Galactic Civ, and just about every military strat game on the market as some examples. Even every RTS (not that the genre is a fair comparison) has this feature. It is a defining element of overview strategy.

Imagine if all these titles turned off party max. It would completely remove the overview strategy to the game. So imagine what it would do for HoMM if it was turned on?

I understand though that HoMM is different (apart from King's Bounty), and isn't about that feature. Fans do expect what it has, and enjoy it for this. I very much respect that. HoMM applies the strategy more on the battlefield and does a brilliant job. So much so, that's what got me bummed when the overview strategy was.. well.. not very strategic. More RPG like. I, and I am sure many others, would greatly appreciate a mod that enriched the overview experience.

Maybe one day...

Well, you bring mostly games that are totally different [for example Civ]. They practically do not have any limits for number of troops - you can have as much as you want where you want if you are able to support them.
Here number of troops depends on your skills to conquer the map. When you conquer more mines, dwelling and towns you can have bigger army than your enemy. Fighting between heroes is just on of many elements of the game.
If anyone wants fair 1:1 battles, where everyone has limited number of creatues then there is duel mode. And it should be really done better [customizable, including how many points each side can use (so you decide if you want to fight between lots or legions)].

It isn't apples to apples, you're right. I shouldn't have drawn other titles into the conversation. The "caps" that are present in those games come from different reasons. You are correct.. one could amass one giant army in some of them. But it's not a common strategy. However it IS the strategy in Heroes. That's more what I was referring to.

The predictable role you take each and every game on the overview map. Build one main Hero and race to get resources so you can upgrade him quicker. Amass as many units you can under his wing, and go for the glory. It is fun. I just wish it had some variation from the same premise each and every time.

Anyways, I'm not here to convert. Guess it's best to enjoy how it is meant to be designed, and appreciate this feature in other titles for which it is a part of.

Well, in H5 it is way better than in for example H3. There you simply had one hero travelling with Dimension Door and flying between castles with Town Portal. So you could have 1 hero for attack and defence.
In H5 you need [of course depending on the map, but let's assume map is quite open] some defence forces + intercepting heroes [medium sized army to kill enemy weaker heroes]
