Hey,

- Well first of all, thanks again for the items,Nidhgrin, really helped me alot

- I have started a trapsin ( lvl 19 now ) but when I reached " Wake of fire" - lvl 12 I really started to wreck havok.. you weren't kidding, Nid.. lol even with 5 shots and 7-9 fire.. it's a killer.
- I got a few socketed claws and "emeraled" them so I just rock atm. 4 into burst of speed and 1 into the "low" SD + the act 2 merc. .. well that speaks for it self really

- Anyhow, I was beeing boosted ( to lvl 20 / anchients - and ready for some Baal runs, normal ) by my RL friend ,Kenzon, but I suddently got an error in act IV, preventing me from playing ( hell I can't even get to my chest/NPC's ) before a ; Your connection has been interrupted appears.
- I quit and reconnected after a few min amd all was fine till I got to act IV again, then it started to occur yet again. Bloody hell, but I reconnected and tried again.. then it was ; Your connection has been interrupted all the way ...?

- anyone got a solution to this, I think the error was HALT # .....( something ) ... I would appreciate an IM or a post here
- And yes, I have plowed through the Bliz FAQ for an answer ( found some similar ( wait 2-4 days and try again )

- If not, I darn need some mules to hold my stuff while I un-re install and make some new toons


- But lol, assassin really kicks butt ( and as you said, Nid ) even with lowby gear.

Assassin is my first choice too but you might as well throw those traps out of the window except death sentry, which is definitely the best one, since they won't help much at higher difficulty levels and just concentrate on melee skills.

My assassin (when I still played) got claw focus, shadow master, block and venom maxed although if I created a new one I wouldn't max poison(higher difficulties and resistances).

If you go for martial arts and use two claws then you don't wan't to have phoenix strike since it along with tiger strike and cobra strike use only your other weapon when striking but since tiger and cobra strikes are a must you can't help taking them(or you can but you just won't survive without) and maxing tiger.

Dragon claw, dragon flight(in new versions the kick damage depends on what kind of boots you are wearing),burst of speed and and that resistance boosting skill are also useful.

If you won't make a full trap assassin you shouldn't use your points on energy.

On items prefer mana and life steal over damage since you can get physical damage from tiger strike and elemental damage from lightning strike (and phoenix strike). You could also use cobra strike but using it will hinder your damage since you won't be able to get as many charges aroung you before releasing them. Cobra strike does also have its uses when combined with tiger strike when you can leak huge amounts of mana and life and its a shame that they only use one weapon when striking.

Remember that you get damage from strenght and dexterity!

Hey,

- Well I am still trying to figure out this buil/playstyle, so I took 4 in wake of fire and that lasted me to lvl 30 ( granted it was a bit slow and hard at times ) and only 1 in claw /block and that lvl 18 SW. But I am in Harrogath atm. with just that ! .

- I am lvl 31 now, and have a truck load of stat points and skills too ( I know Kenzon is laughing ) but I am a pts. munger. BUT now I can't kill anything so I am asking for some more details as to what and why I should put skills into the various "trees" - It just dosen't cut it to say that traps suck 'cept death sentry, just had a chat with a lvl 86 assassin ( mixed ) and he told me ; drop a little in everything..  DOH

- And, mind you, I have nothing that is specifically for an assassin in gear.  Charms and other "minor" things that is general , I have loads of.

- And a few questions :
@Nid, why Wake of fire, and not wake of Inferno ?
Death Sentry IS cool, but I have a feeling I need ( as the necromancer ) corpses to cast them on, or ?
Mind blast ( the stunning part ) that I get, specially with the AOE added in the 1.11. or are there something more to this than meet the eye ?
- Dex/str and OR mana/life ?? or all four ?  ( JT just got me a bit confused with his last sentence )

The most effective sin build imo is the pure lightning trap sin. Max lightning sentry and its synergies - death sentry is effective in cows, but is useless against sparse enemy formations, bosses and pvp. Don't bother with claw mastery or claw block because the best weapons for a trapper are not claws invest in shadow master, bos, and mind blast if you want to duel (the stun renders the other duelist unable to escape from the traps and will die within a few seconds while it can also 'convert' monsters so its a nice allrounder skill). This build requires as many +skills items as you can get so aim to get items such as Enigma, spirit, hoto and a +3 trap helm. As for stats: just enough Str to equip armor, enough Dex to get max block on your shield, plenty on Vita and none in Energy.

- But before that, I probably should mention that as much as I hate hacks and the like, duel is maybe 2nd on that "list"   ( not even in NwN, which I have played in years on end, I really hate it.
- I want a toon that can help in a party and also be able to do a bit of exploring/quest huntin' on me own

- As for the lightning-sin, I get what your saying.
- And the part about claws, I just saw an assassin with shield and a sword Crescent Moon 3 Socket Axes/Swords/Polearms Shael + Um + Tir 10% Chance To Cast Level 17 Chain Lightning On Striking

Hiya Guz,

I was keeping those items for trading purposes, and wasn't really using them myself.  It's always better if you can help someone with them, than if they just sit there on a mule, imo

On the trapsin, be careful though...  The build I described was for a player versus player assasin in 1.10.  I'm not certain whether the build will still work that well in 1.11.  And as I was playing with top gear back then, I suppose hell could be challenging at least.

I don't remember exactly how I dedicated my skillpoints, but it has to have been something like this:

TRAPS:
fire blast 1 (prerequisite)
shock web 1 (prerequisite)
charged bolt sentry 1 (prerequisite)
wake of fire 20 (main skill 1)
lightning sentry 20 (main skill 2)
death sentry 20 (main skill 3)

total: 63


SHADOW DISCIPLINES:
claw mastery 1 (prerequisite)
psychic hammer 1 (prerequisite)
burst of speed 1 (supportive skill 1)
weapon block 1 (prerequisite)
cloak of shadows 1 (prerequisite)
shadow warrior 1 (supportive skill 2)
mind blast 20 (main skill 4)
shadow master 1-17 (supportive skill 3)

total: 27


MARTIAL ARTS:
dragon talon 1 (prerequisite)
dragon claw 1 (prerequisite)
dragon tail 1 (prerequisite)
dragon flight 1 (main skill 5)

Overall total: 94 (reached at lvl 83)



Guide:

wake of fire
Why spend 20 points in wake of fire?  Its damage is low against monsters after normal, and even fully synergized the damage isn't huge.  Well for some reason wake of fire is able to stun enemies in place for a fraction of a second, and delay their actions or movement.  This makes it a killer trap for duels, since you can place them quickly and don't need to look after them later, and gain action and speed advantage over your enemy.

Because wake of fire isn't really meant as your main damage dealing trap, putting points in fire blast or wake of inferno to boost its synergies, would be a waste.

What's wrong with wake of inferno?  For one, enemies have to actually be hit by it.  Most of the time they get hit by part of a flame jet, but far from take the full damage.  Against monsters, mind blast could help nicely to keep them in the right position to take full fire damage, but for duels it is too slow.

EDIT: I'm not quite sure whether I did put 20 points in wake of fire, after all.  Might have been as little as one, but I don't recall.


lightning sentry
This is the main damage skill.  It shoots 10 times, does nice damage with some synergies and +skills, and has a long range.  At the time it was excellent for duels


death sentry
Death sentry serves two purposes.  First of all it's a great synergy for lightning sentry.  Secondly it's amazing against monsters, with its corpse explosion.  So it will help you through the game more easily.  To answer your question, you don't need corpses to cast death sentry on.  It's just another trap really.  If it doesn't have corpses lying around, death sentry will cast lightning.  If there are corpses, they will go pop


mind blast
This skill is pure evil.  The damage is rather low, though magical (not elemental), which is nice.  But it stuns enemies for a long time and has a rapid cast rate, which means certain death for anyone who's struck by it in duels.  Even against monsters it has two added pluses, in that it holds enemies in place amidst your traps, and it converts some of them to your side for some time.


dragon flight
In duels where I faced enemies with so much lightning resistance (or absorb ) that I was unable to kill them, or enemies that were hard to approach, I used dragon flight to teleport closer or away, or to hit them and then back off again.  Given the poison damage I had in charms, this was a more than valuable skill in duels.


burst of speed
One point (+ to skills items will boost it further) is enough to make you run like the wind.  It would be silly not to spend one point in this.


shadow warrior
Great in duels for its low mana cost, and a very nice decoy all round.


shadow master
Once your character build is complete, and you can begin putting more points in shadow master, it becomes a much more reliable ally than your shadow warrior.



Stats:
- Strength: enough to wear gear (was quite a lot for me)
- Dexterity: enough for 75% block with shield (actually this counts for all but a few dueling builds...)
- Vitality: every single point you can spend
- Energy: none (I wasted some points in this during the early levels but since mana potions are for sale now, none should do)



I suppose what this_other_guy says about maxing lightning synergies is true for a player versus monster build.  Here's a rough sketch of how the above PvP build could be adapted:

TRAPS:
fire blast 1 (prerequisite)
shock web 20 (synergies)
charged bolt sentry 20 (synergies)
lightning sentry 20 (main skill 1)
death sentry 20 (main skill 2)

total: 81


SHADOW DISCIPLINES:
claw mastery 1 (prerequisite)

burst of speed 1 (supportive skill 1)
weapon block 1 (prerequisite)

fade 1 (supportive skill 2)

total: 9


MARTIAL ARTS:
zip, nada, nothing...

Overall total: 90 (reached at lvl 79)

Hey,

- First of all, thanks, Nid, very informative ( in the way I like it.. or should I say, can comprehend it ) - No offence to you other fellas .

- I have set my mind out for that trapsin ( and I get the lightning-sin now, so I will go that way )
- The skill allocation you describe is almost what I have now ( lvl 52 - "Baal runned" from lvl 25 or so )
- I have spend 4 in wake of inferno so far, but will invest more in it as time goes by ( belive it or not, I still have 90 stat and 21 skill pts. to distribute.. ) All that I dont get is the stun part, you say , roughly a seconds time , I haven't experienced that yet, but I can see the benefits of this trap ( I like to call an assassin a fighting wizard..?? ) and the way it "explodes" :

In all directions when triggered.

- I have invested in burst of speed , mainly because I dont have any really high end gear for her yet ( although I have a Godly dusk shroud of the fox as a loan atm. ) - approx. 1400 AC and some other things. That way, when things gets a bit to heavy for me, I can run like the wind and still be able to stop for a little while trapping or.. yes, mind blasting them with the chance to convert too  
- I presently have 6 in death Sentry, but will change that to lightning sentry when I get to play again. And only use this as synergies and in specific areas.
- As for SW or SM, I have decided to go SM, although I then give up the chance to somewhat, control my minion ( trap and attack wise ). But after have read a little about the SM, I see that this one can actually get runic armor/claws and have ( even at lvl 30 and +1 in it ) access to ALL of the assassins ways of wrecking havoc, so thats nice imho
- I still dont get the dex /- chance to block with shield... is it "just" that the more I invest in dexterity, then more or higher chance I get to block ?  Say I have a 30% chance on a shield, can I actually raise that % with pouring dex. into the build ?
- I may have been a bit brute in my last post, requesting a sort of mapped build, but that wasen't my intention, just what you, Nid. wrote about allocation of str,dex and so on. I have been more or less accustomed to take a peek at the Arreat Summit page and then look for rune/set and others that would benefit my build the most in the long term e.g. what is the str. / dex. etc. required for that item and then set my max. at that... is that an act of a feebleminded or even naive persons approatch ?

- Just to finsish this half a page ranting off, I will say that I had to have done something right in the build, because at Baals minions place, once I got the mind blast up to 5 or 6 and layed down 10 or so different traps AND using the mind blank( cloak of shadows ), ensuring me most of the kills at times, even higher lvl players started to stand aside and actually ask me if there was something I needed first for the loot.. what an online power trip I just got there , lol

I could say a lot of things right now but dont have time.

About Uber tristram. It is available in closed battle.net only. Both ladder and non-ladder. Myself i have done it about 4 times now. 3times with my kicker assa and once with my zealot. It is not that hard, you just have to know good strategy.

And William your LL( life leech) problem. Get Draculs, or last wish, or just Exile. But i prefer the first two. Why those? Cause you get life tap curse on striking. When a monster with that curse ge hit by you, you get 50% life back from dmage what have you done. And good is that it works also on Meph. And Herald of Zakarum is called Zaka not HoZ.. Well what do i know about how do you call it in USWest/East.But in Europe it is called zaka.

Dexterity raises your chance to block while carrying a shield.
So if you have a 30% chance to block in your shield you can raise your chance to block to 75%(max) if you have dexterity high enough.

You forgot about Breath of the Dying, BOTD, mine gives about 12% life steal.
I have Draculs, 2 Carrion Wind rings, one gives 7% life steal and the other gives about 8% life steal, I have eye of etlich amulet, although I seriously need better and mine gives about 4% life steal, I have String of Ears belt which gives me 5% life steal although string of ears is crap, I have Gris Armour but that sucks lol, I have A  cool helmet given to me by a friend and that gives me about 7% life steal.

So my life steal is over 50% and that is really good.

But you wont need all of that LL cause you have draculs. with those ypou can get life even from undead guys. You should get rid of few stuffs like other carrion at least, get raven and you cannot be frozen at all(expect the pally aura). And for your armor get Guardian angel it is good and not even expensive, or najs light armor this isnt bad either. Those are just fine until you get CoH or Forti.

I have Fortitude and my Carrion Wind Rings are actually pretty good, they are the best rings I have so I shall stick to having them for the meantime, and alot of life steal is good for me in Hell Mode.

Hey,

- Thanks JoonasTo that was what I needed to know. Though I havent experienxed it going up when I have upped my stat as of yet ( I have 130 dex. )

- I just realized, my build does very well, even in high end NM, with lowby 'ish gear and I am a purebreed trapsin ( lightining ) but I was wondering if the Cloak of Shadows is a skill well invested in too ( in moderations ) ? - At lvl 2 it's + 15 (%) to MY defence and -18% to enemy defence for 10 sec. and the way I play my trapsin.. i think it's worth it.. or ?

- I have invested 6 in burst of speed ( I know, a few to many ) but as I posted previously, I like to have that "run-like-the-wind"  option when things gets a little too heated for my ( lvl 53 ) 418 htp.

- All I really need now ( taken from my limited time of playing the game ), is some better gear ( runic things or even set items ) and charms to increase my pathetic melee dmg. - maybe a few mana increasing things.

Spehere, fir charms you may like to get Gheeds Fortune, increases MF and gold from monsters and decreases venue prices, or an Annhilius Small charm, these are the best charms in the game, but are rare as hell.
