I don't like the Summoning school.  Its sub-skills suck and it has almost no good spells.  Sure, it enhances your Raise Dead and Summon Elementals.  Summon Elementals is an all right spell, but the spell is high-level: you'll get it late, if at all.  And you can't count on Summon Phoenix at all.  Dark magic, on the other hand, has good spells on every tier, from Weakness to Puppet Master.  It's too bad that Dark magic does not benefit from spell power though.

The must-have skills for a necro are:

Offense + Frenzy (ASAP!), Archery, Tactics
Logistics (as always)
Luck (as always)
Sorcery (if you are going to do any kind of magic)

That only leaves 1 slot, which is already filled by your starting skill.

I find that with Vladimir it is very unlikely to get the above set of skills.  I've had more success with Lucrecia and Diedre.  But the start is easier than with most.

Snap I think you overlook both phantom forces and haunted mines in the summoning tree. Haunted mines is one off the best abilities in game.

Phantom Forces can be learned with Arcane Knowledge.  You won't be able to clone every unit, but with necros you'll always be cloning skillies anyway

I never tried haunted mines.  I understand that you can syphon off ghosts from there?  I think patch 1.2 has disabled this exploit.

You mean magic insight right that one that lets you learn lv 3 spells no matter if you have school or not.

Haunted mines was calling for a nerf so Im not suprised. Havent played necro since patch. If they changed haunted mines I would agree with you that summoning werent as good and with the summon elementals nerf its even worse then.

Dark magic though a school that mainly dont need high SP exceptions is decay and puppetmaster and blindness. However you are better off with frenzy then blindness wich again dont require SP. Summoning tree is way more dependant on SP and -SHOULD- suit necros better. Its wierd that it might not be the case, anymore. Still raise dead raises more then twice the number off creatures on expert summoning magic and master off life. A spell that is very important for necros IMO.

If you dont want summoning you simply shouldnt pick vladimir. As for other skills heroes seem to have equal chance getting them.

And as for luck, seems to be a very rare skill for necros, however its nice to have. I think enlightment also is a pretty good skill to have gives you more knowledge and one ability there gives you +1 knowledge and +5% necromancy. very nice.

EDIT: haunted mines still works the same way as before. Nothing has been "fixed". I have no idea if this is intended or not but its this way right now so consider it when choosing hero or skills. Haunted mines gives you a number off ghosts when capturing a mine, first month 10 ghosts then the number increases.

Vlad FTW

Having Raise Dead at the start of the game is extremely powerful.  You almost never have to return back to town for more troops.  Since you can raise the ones that die and you gain more from necromancy, your army GROWS as you fight instead of getting killed off like every other heros.

Killed of? and what kills them? Neutrals? Learn to fight them, and you will see that you don't need any rise dead things to win without loses.. ;x

Vladimir is the endgame king but early on he is a pure crap. Level 10 and 1 knowledge? ohh, come on. ~~ And that isn't that rare. You gotta swap sorcery for enlightment if you want to have enough mana (+intelligence), otherwise you need like 15 level to be able to use the spell several times. Pathetic.

Also, if you take logistics, you can't have dark magic cuz there is no place for it left. Bummer. necro without dark magic? That's no necro to me.

Hehe just played a game in Last Hope last night with random towns and got necro and Lucretia, didn't get raise dead from mage guild, and was never offered dark magic, but that didn't matter, I won anyway (it was a ToH game too so against a good opponent), expert light magic with mass haste and mass divine strength did wonders. Well also helped to have battle frenzy and necklace of the bloody claw so my skellies had damage 3-4.

So in other words, Raise Dead really isn't mandatory to win with necro.

Markeel? You mean Markal? Markal is a campaign hero, so he doesn't count (campaign heroes are mostly overpowered and can't be chosen in skirmish/multiplayer anyway).

I started to change opinion recently.

Undead doesnt need raise dead to win games, it might help but dark magic serves you good to. Mass spells takes only half initiative and then you can take something else instead off sorcery.

Kaspar works very nice aswell. To bad both attack and knowledge is so low with necro so that ballista isnt very usefull.

Playing might with necro seems to work just as good as magic. Getting defence, attack and dark magic might even be better then having sorcery, raise dead and enlightment.

For most games you cant count on having more then 3 skills + abilities when the battle that settles the game takes place.

What hero you use totally depends on how you like to play necro, might or magic both work very nice wich makes it a fun faction IMO.

True, the thread was a bit dead, but things had changed a lot since it's start.  I personally don't play necro a lot, but would like to know some heroe favorites.  Of course perhaps the Strategy thread would be a better place for that.

Kaspar is very powerfull but in long battles, after that 3 healings, his speciality ends...
Naadir is quite balanced- those ghost reinsforcement is great, especially to eat counterattacks, block shooters and to encircle powerfull enemy units.
If you are able to eliminate crucial troops- you have lots of time to cast reanimate dead and get off the battle without simply no looses...

Deirdre, additional bad luck/morale as she gains levels and a mass slow that cannot be dispelled.
Since neutrals often have 0 luck/morale, this instantly puts them in the negative.

Lucretia and her vampires are also powerfull. Vampires do more damage, which results in more heals/resurrections. Also the double mana regeneration from day 1 helps during creeping when the knowledge is still low, so you can cast raise dead twice as much which you need untill you get archers/liches.
