Heroes III: Random Map Templates / Editor 2006 Update

Drugoi -

I'm still playing a lot of HOMM3; what glorious balance and immersive environment that game has! I was just getting into random map templates about a year ago but gave up when work got busy. Can you assist me with a few items?

- where can you get templates these days? Toheroes.com has been reconfigured and I can't find the old map area.

- if templates only allow you to create random maps in-game, is it possible to use the Map Editor on these maps once they are created? If so, how? My goal would be to create a random map, then go through deleting all topes, tombs, and boxes which upset my sensibilities for game balance.

- or: does anyone know of a template with no relics or topes allowed that would be appropriate for playing against the AI?

Spacibo!

Random Templates - Table of Contents.

I think this thread has pretty much anything you need to create YOUR OWN template customized the way you prefer :
@angelito: Random Templates
Check out at angelitos list (second post on thread) for links on other threads.
Second post by angelito on same thread gives you a description of the way rmg files (templates) are organized. (Similar info you can find on Kerberos interview with the vampire - if you don't understand, visit link above ).
In order to view rmg files (templates) you can use TextEdit*

As for pre-made random templates visit:
Wizards and Warriors > Downloads > Maps > Random Templates
(It is not that fancy as toheroes was, since you don't have a picture and a brief description, but nevertheless it provides you with the template you want)
Oh, I almost forgot, you might want to check out Angelitos Fiesta which is a template without many artifacts. I am sure you 'll like it. Just let angelito know you want a copy of his template.

- dimis -

* However, this is not the official link for TextEdit. I don't remember where I first got it, that's why I re-distribute it. If you bump into TextEdit as you learn about the properties of RMGs, please let me know in this thread. Thank you in advance.

A few years back I made a RMG template generator that randomized templates for heads up play. As an option it could avoid to place Utopias, merchants and relics. Also it has options for how large monsters to have, how much resources to place, how many towns of your kind you get and options for disabling cartographers, banning diplomacy, removing dimension door, expert view earth/air, and all forms of flying (spells and arties).

If there is any interest in this now when Homm 5 is out, I can put it up on the web somewhere.

I'm still interested in this.  Heroes 3 is the last Heroes released that had a random map generator; I like playing random maps because it greatly increases the replay value of the game.  And, oh, my laptop is far too old to play Heroes IV well, much less Heroes 5.

Here you go:
http://129.16.225.87/heroes/rmggen-release.zip

there is README.txt inside, read that first :-)

This was all packaged up in a hurry, so the README.txt is probably written in a very non-sensical english :-)

Hi, i have just downloaded the map generator. i was reading the README file, but i didn't understand how to run the program. i think it is simple, but i don't really know about computers actually. So, how should i do the following:

1. Start a command prompt, and go to the folder with rmggen files (the rmggen folder)

2. type java RMGgen

Quote:
1. Start a command prompt, and go to the folder with rmggen files (the rmggen folder)
Press START, and then "EXECUTE". There you type "cmd" and press enter. Now you have a command prompt (DOS). You can change directory with the command "cd".

For example:

After you have started the prompt, you see something like:
c:\documents\john\

Now you type "d:" behind that last backslash and press enter:
c:\documents\john\d:

You will now see:
d:\

So this way, you can change between different harddrives.

If you type "cd.." instead of "d:" after the last backslash and press enter:
c:\documents\john\cd..
You will see this:
c:\documents\
And if you do it again, you will see:
c:\

Now all you need is finding the needed folder. If you type "dir", you will see all folders. If you type "dir/p", you will see 1 page full of folders, and by pressing space, it will show the next page (just in case you have many folders/files on that level). Easier way is to find this folder by using the Windows explorer and keep the path in mind / write it down. Then you can just go down the whole path by typing it into the command prompt.

Quote:
2. type java RMGgen

When you have found the folder where all these rmggen files are loacted (let's say it is called "rmgFOLDER") and your command path looks (similar) like this:

c:\programs\dingdong\bamboom\rmgFOLDER

you just have to type "java rmggen" and press enter.

Hope this helped.....

More players?

This template generator is fantastic, but is there any way to get it to generate templates for more than 2 players?  My friend and I usually like to have 4-6 computer players when we are facing each other.  Also, we sometimes like to do a 4 human player hot seat.  Any ideas?
