Just too freaking hard

You know, I've played HOMM for at least 3-4 versions now and I've never had as many difficulties as I've had in this game.

I've had to download a patch so that I could crush a circle of druids because the AI had an army that made me feel like Richard Simmons with feather duster when it came time to fighting him (3rd campaign of the Inferno quest).

Then when I played the Necropolis campaign I had to type in a cheat for the last battle because I was facing 200 angels and 3000 foot soldiers who would waste me with one swipe of their swords (apparently the trick is to attack in the first few weeks).

Now I'm getting creamed in the FIRST campaign of the Dungeon campaign and from what I'm reading it only goes downhill from here.

Ok, I'm playing on Hard (not Heroic) which should make the game challenging, not freaking impossible.

I don't know what kind of master strategists they expect the average guy to be, but I'm getting super annoyed with playing the same campaign 7 times in a row and then combing through the forums to find some obscure trick (like attack Godrick's castle the 3rd week) so that I can move on.

I've never seen such frustration from the average player in any game I've ever played.

Even PC Gamer was saying that this title is stupidly hard.

Am I the only pussy who is finding this game over the top in it's difficulty?

Er... it is hard, but still managable. Patch 1.2 has made certain missions harder than before (such as C2M3 and C3M5 you mentioned).

I fought the above missions on heroic 1.2, and I was able to pass them. I had some previous knowledge of these missions, and I planned out my character carefully, with numerous restarts and trial level-ups at the beginning to make sure I don't get useless stats and skills.

For example, if you have Dark (spirit link), Summoning (summon pheonix) and Sorcery on Markal, then you can defeat Godric no matter how powerful he is, since you have unlimited mana and thus unliminted undead and phoenix.

Based on your number of angels I think you fight Godric kind of late (some time on week 5 I guess?). I think people can wipe the map clean in 2 weeks and half, and fight Godric on week 3 the latest (no logistics needed). If you take longer than that, then there is something to be improved on your end, too. (Well actually it doesn't matter, as 95 angels and 1000+ footman are still going to kill anything of yours in one hit.)

I'm just finding (from reading the posts) that a LOT of people are having difficulty with multiple missions.

I fully admit that I'm not a strategic genius with this game, but I'm getting smoked on the first level of the dungeon series. I'm printing off some comments that I read, but if I'm still leaving a smoking crater then I'm going to have to go down to "easy" methinks.

heheh i'm playing normal and so far, easy as pie.    the pc gamer guy said normal was difficult but it hasnt been.  of course im patched so i dunno.   the game has been cakewalk so far though.

yeah so try normal.   you'll find it a lot easier than say......  H2MM POL campaign or H3MM Shadow of Death campaigns.

There are some walkthroughs in celestialheavens.com; some of them are pretty updated to the patch.

Most people have problem with the missions because they are doomed by bugs that make them unable to finish a mission. Difficulty complains are limited in just a handful of missions, namely C1M5, C2M3, C3M5, C4M3, C5M2, C5M3 and C5M5 (ops that's more than a hand).

General advises you get are usually like:

1) You can do it faster than that.
2) Don't get a might-only hero.
3) Try not to lose any unit. Leave the hard ones till later.
4) Kill the AIs ASAP.
5) Split out 1-unit army to soak up damage.

The first dungeon mission is really easy. The trick is that you don't try to kill ALL of the enemy heroes at the end battle. Run up next to the dragons and let them kill each other and then take out whoever is last one standing.

While playing on normal, I always took out 2-4 of the enemy heroes, while having relatively little losses of my own.

On the whole rushing seems to reward me instead of punish me! I finished C2M3 with an army that would make anyone laugh without any casualties (apart maybe 4-5 single units) because I had gating maxed out and I guess I was lucky too.

I played campaigns 1&2 on normal and thought they were hard but when I realised that by rushing every map is a piece of cake I turned difficulty to heroic and rushed my way through the other campaigns till C6M4 where the enemies' turns take 15min 37s(I measured it)

I can only speak from my own experience and that's a long walk on a big cake. Especially the third mission on the dungeon campaign took a lot of time. Was extremely easy when I found out how small a force you really needed.

Advice I can give
- Try to wipe out some of the enemy heroes, that way you can recruit them the next week and gain a strong defence for your main castle.

Ahhh... I think I might need that patch. I only have Hard and Easy options...

Of course, once again that leads me to say that this game was released without ironing out the bugs.

I did that, and he has this massive army of Shadow witches, dark riders, hydras and assasins that makes short work of me.

I'm trying the level over again on easy and I'll let you know if I have any better luck.

I think I'm going to need the patch since I only have "hard" and "easy" options.

Still... with all of the "bugs" and "patches" that this game needs they're not going to gain any new fans to this franchise. They really dropped the ball on this version methinks.

I forgot to note, this is all on version 1.2 so it should'nt apply to your problem, sorry.

C4M1:
Build yourself some mage guilds, and let magic speak for you. If you are playing on a low difficulty, you should be able to build all the way to mage guild lv 5.

Most of the player complain from the stupid AI. Think man there are many successful strategies in this game and the game want thinking!!
Easy is for new players. even normal is for nearly new players. If the player had played homm3 and homm4 well it must not have insoluble troubles in Homm5.

Yeah the AI. is really stupid and in custom games it has only one strategy.rushing

atleast in campaigns they have different strategy for each map
...but everymap can be rushed

The difficulty does not always increase with every mission,it's pretty much random. Some missions are just snowy-plain hard while others a cakewalk.Usually to avoid trouble you must max your lvls, visit all attribute-giving locations and build your mage guilds in every mission before moving on.Relying on magic can be a life saver so a school or two can do the trick(two for necros and wizards mostly). For instance cursing is good but being able to summon a phoenix as well it's crazy!About Godric's large army you can get all neutral undead armies before the fight and in the battle you can cast frenzy, slow, weakness,MANY raise dead. With Raelag just flag each mine(esp gold mine ASAP) build up creature duelings(Do not upg anything other than the raiders-last week and if you have the money) and mage guild 5(exp destructive of course).Attack only when you have a decent army and remove the furies from the battlefield when a battle seems tough. Then buy ALL creatures and you should not have much problem.
