Poll Question:
~Do you want to rate members' Posts?~

I thought about this idea after having been involved in numerous discussions regarding "HC members issuing QPs to certain Posts". Although many good ideas came out of these discussions, I have just had a brain-fart that I would like to share with everyone. I have put my suggestion up for review with Valera here, but this Poll is to see what HC members think about it.

So, please vote honestly or feel free to offer suggestions on improving the concept or criticisms about it.
Would you like to see a "rating scale" at the bottom of each Post, where you could vote on its quality?
(Similar to the emails sent by companies asking you: Did you find this email VERY USEFUL, USEFUL, or NOT USEFUL AT ALL?)

Responses:
Yes, I would like to see this.
No, I don't want to see this.
I would like to see something like this?
Moderators should be the only ones who can rate something.

Yet again, another good idea.
And why do you post these in VW?
Just post these ideas in Turban, these are too good to be here.
But anyway I will say an opinion.
Rating users posts, would be a good idea to see what other people think of your posts in a way I guess.
I agree with this, it would be good to know what is a bad post from a good one, but I suppose that is what the +qps and -qps signify.
IBut nonetheless I will agree to this.

William, I did Post these recent ideas in the Turban Tribunal, and included the links to those Threads in my Polls. The reason that I put these Polls in the VW, is so that they can eventually get deleted. In 2 years from now, it won't matter who voted for what, because my ideas will either have been discarded or implemented.

Unless a Moderator disagrees with my opinion and decides to move these Threads to the Turban Tribunal, I would rather not clutter up that Forum. Besides, this is how I have always done my Polls since the MYT GAME led to numerous Polls every week. It would have been crazy to keep that many Polls in the Tavern...crazy I say!

Well if you say so Leo I will offer what you ask .
Bad Idea .
Rating other posters is bad because theres alot of dislikes & favortism here.
People & I will say it straight up will mark someone to having a bad post.
I will use WIlliam as an example because i know people will give his replies or thread a bad review simply because he is disliked.

You can put you heart into a reply or a thread & if you get a bad ratings.
I made many threads that interested me but not the mods.
I can easily get a bad rate & it would be like ok whatever i give up.

I think this idea will motivate people less because it is basically the same almost as getting a QP.
It's tought & it may cause people to get unessary QP etc.

Maybe if you only allow possitive ratings ie. if you dont have something nice to rate dont rate anything at all

and maybe only letting people with a certain amount of qps rate posts

Well, that's ONE WAY of looking at, Manuel...But, I will now look at the situation with the "glass half full".
In my opinion, the rating scale would give people an opportunity to provide anonymous feedback about a Post, without having to create a new one themselves. In essence, it would be a quicker & more structured way of saying either: "Good job" or "What were you thinking?!" than writing a Post or sending an IM.

I hope that HC members wouldn't go out of their way to give Posts negative ratings simply based on who wrote it, but rather, that they were honest about their opinion. That way, a member could get an idea of whether their Posting habits are "on the right track" or if they are "out in left field".
If we were to refine my original idea by giving members the choice to have the rating scale appear in their Post, then things might make more sense. (I actually think that I'm on to something here, because having a scale in each Post would cause clutter and might increase loading times for each webpage.)

Members who would like to get some feedback from others, for one of their Posts, could click on a box in the Editing or Composing screen to have the scale appear at the bottom of their Post. That way, if the decision were up to the individual Poster, than there would hopefully be very little of them going around...not causing too much clutter or extending loading times.

In addtion, a condition could be added, whereas a member who selects the rating scale for their Post, would have their signature removed. This would, hopefully, reduce the clutter and resolve any loading-time issues caused by the rating scale.

Good ideas, Mr Niceguy!

Following either your suggestion (of having a button at the bottom), or my suggestion (of letting the Poster choose to have the scale)...or by combining both for that matter, not every single Post on HC would have the rating scale...especially the one word replies or the ones with only a smiley!
Manuel,

if someone were NOT to get a positive rating (following the "only positive ratings" scenario proposed by Mr Niceguy), then it could simply be that no one voted. The Poster wouldn't have to feel that members are not rating his/her Thread because it sucks, is unpopular, or whatever...it could simply be that no one is taking the time to rate it.

Try to look on the bright side for once, man! Your pessimism might get contagious...Achoo!
Hahaha!

I voted "I would like to see something like this" because the idea is good but I dont really see a firm tangible system yet.

Here are a couple of things I would like to mention, for influence of the design of this great idea
A One thing we have to keep in mind while taking this into consideration is "groups" supporting eachother all the time.
B I am also thinking we could limit the number of "votes, or "feedback" in various ways (IE a certain number a day)

Thats it. But your idea is very important Leo, because just look at awnser 4 in the poll. Moderators should be the only ones who can rate something. Well, thats how it is now and I think there is a lot of happiness and sadness put in the hands of a few chosen average joes (And pandora, but she can only do so much).. A seperate rating system would notify mods of potential quality posts, and ALSO would serve as an unnofficial QP award to those posts which mods ignore, overlook, or simply do "not agree with"

Acu brought up some good ideas too, and Mr niceguy.. thats like, the awnser to that problem lol (just adding a link like this | edit post | Quote reply | Rate |

Back to acus suggestions against this idea, how so many will bash the same particular user out of dislike.. Well, I'm thinking limiting the number of times per use per day could help that. Also I'm thinking not makinbg the votes anonymous, and last, but most importantly if there is a negative vote against a post, I suggest it be a nice way of saying things. Here is a list example

1: Your post is in my opinion less than quality
2: Great post
3: I cant believe you didnt get 10 qp's for this post!

Uh, thats a really crappy list. I might change it but I hope you get the idea.

And finaly, This should be in the tribunal, after all isnt it not only a poll but an official discussion about the idea itself?

Definitely agree with this.  You make it anon, then it makes it easier for the people who dislike you to abuse your posts.

WOW...That's awesome stuff Celfious! You took these ideas to the next level. (I'm just glad that I started these Polls/Discussions before you decided to leave for "a month or so". )

Following your suggestions to limit the amount of times per day that members can rate Posts and having the raters not be anonymous, I would actually be willing to sponsor this idea for implementation @ HC.

If we wanted to give this rating system some true value (and potentially avoid people giving negative remarks all the time), we could organize the "per day limitation" in a way that would make members think twice before using it. For example, if we used the amount of QPs or Red Stars that a member posseses as the yardstick, things might look like this:

0 red stars = Cannot rate Posts.
1 red star  = 1 rating per day.
2 red stars = 2 ratings per day.
etc...

OR

0 QPs = Cannot rate Posts.
1 QP  = 1 rating per day.
2 QPs = 2 ratings per day.
and so on...

I actually think that the amount of QPs would be a better yardstick, so that members who just joined HC (and have 2 red stars, but no QPs) would be motivated to earn this ability, instead of having it from the get-go. And members who had lots of QPs would most likely know what is a good Post and what is a not-so-good Post.

In addition, if ever someone tried to rate a Post twice or tried to rate more Posts in a single day than they were allowed, then a message could be displayed that explains the limitations (as is done now when trying to vote numerous times in the same Poll).

Regarding the suggestion of having the raters known to all (i.e. not anonymous), I think that the implications of this are obvious.

Celfious said:
Quote:

I like this statement on both accounts, and here's why:

-This rating system would hopefully help the Moderators do their job by reducing the amount of IMs & emails that they get (and have to sort through) from members who want them to look at certain Posts for "xyz" reasons.

-This system would give all HC members a more recognizable & quantifiable form of feedback than writing a Reply that says: "Good Post!"
Finally, I gave it some thought and determined that a "Drop-down box" might be a better interface than a button. For example:

| View Profile | Quote Reply | Rate Thread |v|[Go]

When a member clicks on the "Drop-down box", they are presented with a variety of options. After they choose the one that best reflects their opinion of that Post, they would then hit the green [Go] button to register their rating.

And as I mentionned earlier, the option to have one's Post rated could always be voluntary. Meaning that the member would have to check the appropriate checkbox while Composing or Editing their Post, if they wanted to have the Rate Thread |v| [Go] option appear.

OR, it could just be something that is available for every single Post (new & old) on all of HC. {I know that I would like to go back and give a few of Bort's hilarious one-liners a postive rating. }

EDIT: I agree that this Thread and this one have probably grown to such an important degree that they should eventually be moved over to the Turban Tribunal. Once the dust settles, I'll ask a Moderator to look after this. Thanks Celfious!

Ok everyone...I have had a revelation!

I have thought of way to combine both my sponsored ideas of rating Posts throughout all of HC and deleting Posts in a Thread that you start.

If we were to use the rating Drop-down box that I mentionned in my previous Post and include Delete Post as an option (which would only be available to the Thread-starter), then there would be no need to have a seperate checkbox system in place.

And since the rating is only that...a rating...it would not immediately delete the Post, but flag it for the Moderators to review. This system could be used for all sorts of things: from flagging a Post for +QP review, -QP review, and deletion; to giving a member criticism, feedback, and praise (limited by their "per-day-limit", of course)!

Of course, that would mean that all Posts on HC would have to have the "Rate Thread |v| [Go]" option, and not just those whose members voluntarily selected to have their Posts rated. In the end, I KNOW that this rating/flagging system will improve HC and give its members a richer level of interaction; and that is why, I would be willing to pay $50 to see it put in place.

shew, there are a lot of ideas there but after reading 1.5 times (1 full time and a skim) I think I get it. But just incase could you list the ideas and maybe summarize them? Is there a main thread?

I know some people will be controversial about thread starters deleting posts in their threads. I really dont take either side about it.

On one hand, its fair, knowing if you post in a thread, your post can be deleted, and second it would for the most part be like having a responsible mod reading the thread.

On the other hand many people will stand against it for complicated yet obvious reasons leading into abuse.. Worse case senario is rampage after such and such periods of time

About the drop down box.... Well the | Quote reply | "RATE" | option, if implemented, would be the only link in that area below posts with particular options. It could be usefull to have a drop down box VS opening into a new window. The format of the box could be similar to polls, or whatever is convenient for users and developers.

It's a wonder the rate idea hasn't been mentioned before
