Look in the game's install folder and find the Editor Documentation folder. This folder contains a set of PDF documents for the editor.

I learned how to use the editor by following the tutorial contained within the HOMM5_Editor_Practical_Guide.pdf manual. Then I read the HOMM5_Editor_Theory.pdf manual from cover to cover to gain further expertise. It will take about four hours for you to do likewise. Once you have finished, You will be able to make your own good playable maps that have the "standard" features used by the random map generator.

The map making forums found at this web site and at the CelestialHeavens web site contain answers to just about any questions you could possibly have as you get down to actually making your maps.

If you you decide that you wish to learn how to customize the standard features to create maps that give the player entirely new experiences, then you will have to learn how to add scripts to your maps. You can learn how to write H5 scripts by studying the fan-created manual titled: The Basics of Heroes V Scripting ver. 2.0 for H5, HOF, & ToTE

This manual can be downloaded from: http://www.celestialheavens.com/viewpage.php?id=567

I have to admit that H5 scripting seems to have a long leaning curve. In fact, unless you have some background in computer programming, you likely will not be able to master it.

Hey guys! I'm creating a big map for eight players, and it's going fine except for a few issues. So I'll just post my questionmarks here and hope someone picks up!

1. I'm trying to make some "mountains/hills" I've made impassable. I've tried to make it so through "Regions", but honestly, I don't get how Regions work. I create one, and name one - but 'edit' only allows me to move it around. I assume I need to chose what the reagion does through scripting? Can anyone tell me if it's only through scripting I can "edit" regions? And if that's the case, does anyone know how a simple "unpassable region" script would look like? ;-)

2. I'm trying to make a certan monster join only a specific player, and act as a normal monster to all other players. Any suggestions?

3. I'm trying to place static "armies" (like the ones at the Tribes intruduction campaign) but I can't seem to find any object that can do the job. Anyone know if there's an object that can do this, or if it's scripting that's needed?

4. Oh, and is it possible to get one hero to look like another? In other words, are the hero portraits hidden somewhere accessible in my heroes 5 folder?

5. How do I make quests through the Seer's Hut?! I remember I could just edit the object in heroes 3, but that's obviously not working now. Is this another scripting task? I so suck a scripting. Like... badly. :/

6. One more thing! How can I make a specific town only have one of the two possible creature upgrades?
Ex: in the haven town of fluffyville, Conscripts / Marksman / Squire / Imperial Griffin / Inquisitor / Paladin / Archangel are unavailable, while Brutes / Crossbowman / Vindicator (and so forth) are available.

Any answers would be deeply appritiated!
(edit, question 6)

You would use the "Mask" function at far left. (past tiles, fills etc.) for making an area impassable. "Regions" are for events that you "script"

I don't script but I believe that is a "script function". I'll take a look and see if there is a selection available.

I'm not sure what you're asking. You can make armies by using the "add" in the object properties window, for as many different stacks as you want. I explain that process in my map-making-guide. A link is at the bottom of my posts to the guide.

I doubt it. But then again, I've have never read any one try it.

You cannot select them like in H3. I think you'll have to script. There is a script guide link at my thread too. Hopefully the Developers will correct this big mistake in H6,

I doubt there is a way to split the upgrades. To my knowledge, you can only enable/disable the upgrade structure under the "buildings" tab.

It is NOT straightforward. Place the Seer's Hut on the map, then select it. Look over on the Properties list for the hut object. Expand the Quest property tree and select the Kind property. Use the drop down list for the field to select the kind of quest you desire. (For example, OBJECTIVE_KIND_COLLECT_RESOURCES).

Look in the HOMM5_Editor_Theory.pdf. Search for this sentence:

Collect Resources – needs additional adjustment. Must have two parameters: the resource ID and its quantity.

It appears on page 27 in my copy. Read the entire section this sentence appears in, and perhaps the material above and below it. This material is about setting up quests for the player in the main map properties. However, the same basic process can be used to set up the quests for the Seer's Hut.

You can do it with scripting, but learning how to write H5 script is difficult.

Aaah, there! I can finally use the Seer's hut for some fun questing, thanks alot. Too bad the artifacts have their 'original coded names' or somesuch as they don't match the in-game artifact names, but I'll figure out which is which eventually.

I must say - this forum is EFFECTIVE! I did post on several forums, but this is the only one with this much usefull help. You guys really are the best ;-).

. There are a lot of helpful folks here but getting HARD Q's answered can take a while sometimes, or may not come at all, just roll with it and take no offense. In H5ME, if you're like me you 'will' come across something new that others have not seen. This is further complicated now, since it seems most eyes are looking towards the coming of H6. Whether or not I learn H5 scripting will depend on what H6 is like.

I am only "good" at the "basics of map-making" so I will help you in the future if you need it. Just HCM me if I am not clear on anything in "My Guide".

FYI, Also, Fulano is currently at work moving all sorts of topics to the H5-Wikia http://heroes5.wikia.com/wiki/Heroes_5_Wiki so save that site. For now use my quide here at HC because it has been updated and I am also needing to update the Wikia.

Welcome to HC fluffe. And a map-maker as well

I've never tried to use that feature myself but when you check the box it opens the maps folder and is asking for a TGA file.

What I would guess is that the map editor wants to convert the TGA file into a DDS file and save it with your map.

What I would do is extract the Heroes 5 Data file (data.pak in the data folder) and convert Agrael's icon to a TGA file.
It's found here:
data\Textures\Icons\Heroes\Inferno\Inferno_Agrael_128x128.(Texture).dds

Then I would try to open the TGA file you just made with the map editor.

I don't know if that will work but just trying to point you in the right direction.  Either that or maybe somebody who knows how to do it will come along and correct my answer.

I made an mod for  custom portaits  for heroes (heroes 5) a few years ago.. back in 1009 or so... (added alot of the ToH players icon as a portaits for some of the heroes in the game  looked kinda cool... in that way they could "owned" their own hero in the game  lol
and its not that hard... all you need to do is to convert the picture you like to use into dds file... and ofc the correct size (meaning you may need 3 different  sizes.. 32*32,64*64 and 128*128)
I think I posted that in the toh forum  I can go look for it...
and post it here... then just open the mod file and look into it and Im sure you get the "hang" of it....

Edit:
Toh Heroes mod

if you Use  Adobe photoshop/or elements  google..  this  plugin:
Photoshop_Plugins_7.83.0629.1500
but Im sure its  here somewhere too

Hello fiur, hope you're doing well.

Is this process you describe the same used as for PWLs and thumbs? What program do "you" use to convert to dds. I have photoshop but I don't see any dds options when working with pics.

Whoa, I missed this. Excellent, I even have one that I thought needed scripting

Also, this really is the last question- probably. How do you make ramps? Sorry to bother you, and thanks for the help. I tried using the ramp terraforming tool, but it didnt seem to work on this hill I made.

The ramp tool is a little tricky at times but here's how I get it to work.  Just to make sure you're using it right, it is meant to be used to connect ground that has been raised or lowered.

Click on the cliff you want to create a ramp on and drag down hill, to the bottom of the cliff.  It won't do anything any other way.

I can give some tips on the shipyard question.  As for the fill tool... I haven't used it much.

Is your shipyard near a ramp?  The player has to be able to get to the boat once it is built.  When you place the shipyard near the ramp you will see a square highlight on the ramp showing where a newly built boat will appear.
