I havent played diablo 2 in several years.

If I were to start a new character, what class should I pick to achieve the most slaughter in the shortest amount of time so that I can find good items to use in said slaughter?

Ok.
Paladins are good with alot of things, because they can deal alot of damage and stuff, and they can wear some very good things, like griswolds set items etc.
Most Paladin items are of very good quality, and I personally use paladins the most.

Barbarians ar very good aswell, and you can deal extreme amounts of damage with using leap.
The Immortal Kings set items are Barbarian only and these are very good to wear.
Some Barbarian items are rather good, and Barbarians have some good things like: they are fast, whirlwind takes out enemies fast, leap is very powerful etc.

Those 2 are the main ones to use if you want a quick game.

In Hell mode, Sorceress suck alot, because in hell, everything is immune to something, and that is bad for a Sorceress.
I personally do not play with Necromancers, as they are generally weak imo.

Bjorn,

If you start over, you want to be as item independant as possible since you only have access to the items you find and can trade, and prolly know only a few other D2 players good enough to lend you top unique items - and secondly because you will want to wear as many magic find items as possible while still being able to play reasonably well.

Any melee character you want to be succesful with will desperately need a good weapon by the time you reach hell.  Most likely you won't have such a weapon at your disposal, which will make progress in hell slow and frustrating.

So my advice is to go with a spellcaster.  Sorceresses speed swiftly through normal and nightmare but cope with heavy magic resistances of monsters in hell, which means dozens of nightmare Baal-runs before you have brought up a second elemental magic tree up to a level descent enough to do sufficient damage in Hell.  I dislike druids and have rarely played them so I don't know if an elemental druid would be any good, strongly doubt that though.  Other semi-spellcasters like hammerdins, tesladins and the like rely (in my experience) too heavily on +skills items to be of use to anyone who starts from scratch.

That leaves two options open (though cold-fire or cold-lightning sorc is not impossible), and that's a trapsin depending on her shadow master and mind blast for crowd control and traps for damage - or a necromancer, preferably a bonemancer.

Because I started playing again with a bonemancer (aka jailkeeper), here's a short list of tips.

Stats:
- Str: enough to wear basic equipment
- Dex: base
- Vit: just about every point you can spend
- Ene: 100 (spend more if you wish, but I prefer to go to town to pick up new mana potions somewhat faster than lose too many points in this)

Skills:
* Curses:
 - 1 point in Amplify Damage
 - 1 point in Weaken (prerequisite)
 - 1 point in Terror
 -> 3 skill points total
* Summoning:
 - 1 point in Clay Golem
 - 1 point in Golem Mastery
 - 1 point in Summon Resistance
 -> 3 skill points total
* Poison and Bone:
 - 1 point in Teeth (prerequisite) (+ 0-19 skill points after build is complete to increase damage of Bone Spear and Bone Spirit)
 - 1 point in Bone Armor
 - 1 point in Corpse Explosion (+ 0-19 skill points after build is complete to increase the range)
 - 20 points in Bone Wall
 - 20 points in Bone Spear
 - 20 points in Bone Prison
 - 20 points in Bone Spirit
 -> 83 skill points total

-> 89 skill points total, meaning this build is complete at lvl 78 (21 additional skill points by lvl 99, spent on teeth or corpse explosion)

Equipment:
* Weapon: a +3 to Poison and Bone skills wand shouldn't be too hard to find, otherwise another +skills wand or gull dagger for magic find
* Armor: perfect topazes socketed armor, other magic find armor or basically anything that makes you happy
* Gloves: magical 25% magic find gloves shouldn't be hard to find, or else anything you like better
* Boots: magical 35% magic find boots are not hard to find either, or anything else really
* Headgear: perfect topaz socketed headgear, or again just anything you like
* Shield: Rhyme shield (Shael Eth) is very good for this build and cheap, some +skills necromancer shield would be nice too
* Belt: if you're lucky some useful unique or set belt, or some +life or mana, resistances, faster hit recovery is not a bad idea either
* Rings: magic find rings, some faster cast rate with +mana or resistances would do well also
* Amulet: either magic find, or +skills with some resistances
-> all equipment should have the lowest possible strength requirements

Play style (Hell):

This is the ultimate crowd control build.  One or two bone walls will seal off entire sections and attract zounds of monsters, engaging the wall.  Some well aimed bonespears, or (when you have no time to aim) some bone spirits make the first monsters bite the dust.  Corpse explosion does the rest, cleaning up large packs of monsters with just a few blasts.

Some evil bastards fly over your bone walls and attack you directly.  This is when terror (a skill I never used before actually) comes into the picture.  It makes them fly away into all directions, so you have the time to finish them off one by one using bone spirit.

Quite a few monsters are non stop on steroids and run faster than you can cast your walls.  Waiting to close them in with a bone prison until they are right in front of you is generally not a good idea.  In this, and in many many other circumstances your clay golem is a lifesaver.  Doesn't last long in hell (though longer than in nightmare) but is cast instantly, and if you learn to cast your golem ahead of you, while you are running away from a pack of speedfreaks, he will stall them and give you the time to cast those precious bone walls.  Never walk around without that golem, and recast it as soon as you can if it's gone, unless you have a death wish.

One point in bone armor may seem rediculous, but through synergies with both bone wall and bone prison this skill absorbs several hundreds of points of damage before you start taking real damage.  As with clay golem, recast this as soon as you can if you see it's fading.

The overview above should already indicate that this is a good player versus monster build.  Most of those builds have trouble beating act bosses.  You will be happy to hear that is far from the case with this build.  All bosses, spare Diablo and Baal can be imprisoned with bone prisons (though you have to make sure you recast on a regular basis), which has as effect that they engage the prisons instead of you.  Killing them is rather slow with 2K damage bone spirits, but which other character can beat Hell Mephisto without any gear and not dying once?

Trouble areas (Hell):

Every character build has weaknesses, and so does this one.  The major advantage of this build is that you're dealing magical damage (bone spear, bone spirit, corpse explosion), which cannot be resisted such as elemental damage or poison.  Still there are a few actual magical immune monsters in the game and killing them is very though.  Corpse explosion seems to deal a portion of physical damage too, so technically you should be able to destroy magic immunes.  Trouble is finding enough corpses to blow up to kill those first few magic immunes of a pack though.  Generally I just use bone prison to park magic immunes somewhere, and just move on (when you get about 2 screens out of sight of a bone prison, the timer stops until you get back into range and the prison stands forever), plus there are only a handful of magic immune monster types in the game.

Running out of mana... generally means instant death.  This build is very mana intensive with several corpse explosions / bone spirits / bone walls per second.  If you run out, and can't cast that final bone wall, recast your golem, or cast that terror, you're pretty much doomed indeed.

Cornering yourself in can happen aswell.  Especially when panicing, or when you're obliged to use bone prisons for another reason, you may wall yourself in.  This usually attracts swarms of monsters and if you don't have enough mana to finish them all off, and don't have enough space to summon a town portal or find out another way to escape, sometimes even a save and exit is the only option.  If you should die in this situation, there will be zounds of monsters surrounding your corpse and probably most of the walls around it will still be standing.

Elemental damage that is not stopped by your bone walls is lethal.  This includes the lightning damage from gloams, deaths of cold enchanted monsters, lightning and blizzard from hierophants, firewalls and meteors from those vampire fellows, and generally all damage from Diablo and Baal.  Because your resistances are low, a hit by any of these means drinking a healing potion asap or not surviving the next blow.  Good news is that your bone walls block just about any other form of projectiles including sparks from lightning enchanted monsters.

Rushing is playing with fire.  When you're doing magic find runs, you may want to skip an entire area by running through to reach a certain zone.  This can be done but is dangerous, and requires excellent timing in terms of recasting golem and choosing to do short battles in between when the mob chasing you becomes too large.

This build has a unique style of play, and you can't rush as fast as some of the melee builds can do with uber gear.  You're quite unstoppable though, mostly because you rarely ever die.  You can stock up on magic find items as much as you want since your main damage (corpse explosion) is not item dependant.  I love playing this build, and it made me start off pretty good (and fast!) again.  Hope this helps, and that you like playing a bonemancer too
