I prefer Heroes 5 because it's the latest Heroes. I've played all heroes games including Heroes 1 and I've moved on until now. h2 -> h3 -> h4 -> h3wog -> h4equi -> H5 -> whatever's next.
H3 forums/tourneys die because it's a natural process.
and frankly I'm beginning to like H5 more and more. it's bloody great!

i perfer heroes 5 just b/c it has all the best parts of all the heroe games before it.its a real nice blend to the game.

I still think heroes 3 all the way. i dont have h5 (my frend doz) so i rarely play it so i try to play h5 more.

Somebody ressurected this thread so I'll respond a little.
I remember when Heroes 3 first came out and I was very excited to try it. My friend got it and we fooled around with it. I remember being very disappointed in the graphics. H2 had charm, and for me H3 didn't. But the graphics don't matter so much.
Another thing I noticed was that the maps in H3 were much bigger than in H2. It could be fun, but it could also be tedious...and once your heroes reach a certain point they've all got expert skills, and it becomes less fun.
So speaking now from a Heroes V point of view, the skill system is certainly fun. It's rare to fully develop a hero and there are plenty of interesting combinations.
The patches have been consistent, even if I don't always care about the fixes, and the expansions interesting. Hammers of Fate was a sub par expansion content wise but I do love the dwarven units. And ToTE looks to be packing in new spells and units and artifacts, much more so than HoF.
Finally I will just say that all the heroes games have major imbalances and I don't prefer the heroes 3 imbalances, I would rather play heroes 1 or 2, or 5 with their particular imbalances.
So that's my $.02

I like h5 best. H3 was great but H5 is much better. In this serie i can truly see how each castle is different. In all previous ones i had the feeling that it was troops that were different only, now i find many things supporting diversity. Totally different strategies for each castle , each castle is not a mix of random creatures anymore(however, i dont like dwarf style: small , big, bigger, biggest). There are some additional features which enable much faster game which is great. Sure, balance issues are still there but its not so bad at the moment i must say. I just hope that nival wont drop this project suddenly after last expansion and will be monitoring players needs for further patches, at least until H6 comes out.

I must say I would place both HoMM 3 & HoMM 5 at the same, first place among HoMM series. Both games are great, yet a bit different. HoMM 5 is better than HoMM 3 in some areas, and vice versa. But this 'would place' can only be possible after further patching and ToE.

h5 is good. I think H3 is the better game, but I'm sticking with h5. However, H3 music= H5 music is good, but I prefer orchestra/symphonic music to the operatic stuff.

I like both H3 and H5, but I play H5, cuz I am aesthete and I like that new 3D world. Also that division into races is more noticeable in H5 than in H3. The only disadventages are less heroes and spells. Moreover, I would rather like H3 spells division- by elements, not by usage.

I think Heroes V is a perfect mixture of Heroes III and Heroes IV. There were a lot of things I disliked in Heroes IV, and Heroes III was my favourite, so I enjoy the more detailed game of Heroes V. Especially with the new creatures and so on...
