Looking up chimera in the dictionary...
chi·me·ra also chi·mae·ra n.
1. Chimera. Gk. Myth. A fire-breathing she-monster usually represented as a composite of a lion, a goat, and a serpent.
2. A creation of the imagination; an impossible an foolish fancy.
3. Biol. An organism, esp. a plant, containing tissues from atleast two genetically discinct parents.
[ME chimere < OFr. < Lat. chimaera < Gk. khimaira.]
This chimera looks pretty greek to me...

Talking of origins
I was surprised that no creatures came from Slavic mythology. We have some good ones here.
Example:
Kikimora(No idea about the translation). A very ugly woman(seriously) thought to create nightmares when called uppon.(Comes from Slovakia)
Rusalka(Something like a vila) We all know what vilas do. They are somthing like nymphs. (Pretty much from everywhere in the Slavic lands)
Baba yaga(Voila a clasic one) An old witch and very powerful from Russian mythology.

Hmm
Griffin-Greek Mythology. Griffins guarded the lake of gold. When Cyclops wanted to steal it the griffins killed them.
Resulka-A beautifull death woman that lives in lakes. She's naked and handsome so she lures males into the water to drown them there.

Actually, I believe it is very these come from human tradition and legends created in similar ways as for ghosts.
It's not unreasonable for the creature to have sprung from a nightmare ( bad dream) where a black horse played a prominent role.
Of one thing I'm sure they're not invented by such a modern thing as D&D.

That could be.
But in any mythology/Game/movie/others are golems. I really don't know where they are from
About nightmares. I guess the horse version is older then the word nightmare(Dream) I think they used the horse name into the Dream version.
So the Nightmare horse legend is older then the Nightmare(dream) I think it was called different in history. Maybe just Bad Dream or something. Then they saw this horse and they called nightmare to it.

Leprechauns is holland but we in norway have christmas Leprechauns in the barn at christmas night we but out cokies and milk to the Leprechaunsonly our Leprechauns have red clothings!!! and trolls and goblin r in the norwegians folklore!

A mare is, according to "the Norwegian Dictionary", a supernatural female creature who torments sleeping people by sitting heavily on their torso. Mares are also known to sit on animals (particularily horses), making them act crazy.
When, in addition, I can tell you that the norwegian word for nightmare is mareritt - comprised of mare - which means mare in english, and ritt - which means ride (noun).
So it would be fair to assume that people who rode very fierce or wild horses said "it was like riding a mare", and it's easy to see how the horse got all tied up in this.
So maybe the nightmare is partly scandinavian!

The leprechaun is, just to clear things out, according to the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, of Irish origin (originally spelled luchorpán, comprised of lu - small, and corp - body), and was a "pigmy sprite".

The name Nightmare for a bad dream comes from the creature called a Mare. In old Scandinavian folklore it was said that people had a bad dream because they were ridden by a mare by nighttime. Some old paintings I've seen shows the mare as a black female demon afflicting sleeping people. On Danish a bad dream is called mare-ridt (Mare Ride) an on english simply a nightmare.
