When I have choice between spell power and knowledge spell power almost always win out. Especially wizard will get only spell power for certain. Warlock and necro may get point in knowledge early in game if I feel it help me move faster.But mostly is always more beneficial for heroe to level in spell power when possible. Heroe who only cast mass spell can get knowledg boost instead if he already have enough spell power for good spell duration.

Attack I always take over defence. It makes big difference in damage each stack will do.

It all depends on the faction really. If you are a Wizard, you will obviously be gaining plenty of Magic Skills and to accomadate for your thriving arcance knowledge, you will need respectable Spellpower and Knowledge. So those would be the two essentials for Wizards.

Now take Orcs. War Machines and Triple Flaming Ballista is easy choice and so Attack is most crucial.

In fact, almost all factions have stats that they do good with. The only stats I could really quesiton are the Dwarves, who have no particular taste. It makes the game with the Dwarves hard as a whole. I think it's better to have excessive Attack or Defense than average amount of both.

Attack and defense are equal when it's hero vs. hero since the attack and defense value of both are negated. For example, a hero with 20 attack and 0 defense fights a hero with 10 attack and 10 defense, the defense value of the second hero cancels out a part of the attack value of the second hero so it's basically as if both heroes had 10 attack.

However, attack is much better when you're fighting neutral creatures. Having high attack means you can kill off neutral creatures much faster, which significantly reduces the chances of you getting hit.

Knowledge is only useful up to a certain point, afterwards spell power is much more useful. The only exception to this is Rangers since they have High Druids and Imbue Arrow. Even Wizards don't benefit that much from having super high knowledge, sure it makes the mini-artifacts more powerful but it costs resources while the benefit from attack and defense are free.

Attack has a few more perks than defense. I would add something like +1HP to all units for every 5 defense points. I think that would make the attack and defense equal.

i thing it's all depend on who is your opponent, when you facing casters you want attack to finish things quickly, when you are magic faction you want def to last longer and cast more spells, as well you want knowledge and spellpower. but this is not so simple you can be might and facin eg. wyngal then there is no point going for attack becouse you need to survive firs turn, you need def. if you think that knowledge is not important imagine you have 0 knowledge :x no magic. same with spellpower. but you can live without attack or defense, even without both. so my point is it depends on map your race as well as yours opponent.

Given the massive importance of magic in these games, it's down to Knowledge and Spellpower.  Which is....kinda sad, really.  A Hero without magic(Not even Level 1/2) can't really do much at all to aid his forces.  It says something that they had to create an entire new system(Shatter Magic) to make a pure Might faction viable/worthwhile.  Even then, the Warcries are a kind of magic...

As for which is more important...flip a coin.  Massive damge, but few casts(And a long recharge time between battles) or lots of casts, fast recharge, but lesser damage/effect?  

But it's not like you can only have one.

Knight: Attack or Defence
Demon Lord: Defence or Attack
Necromancer: Knowledge
Wizard: Knowledge
Warlock: spellpower
Ranger: Spellpower (it's otherwise way too low) or Defence
Runemage: I favour Spellpower here...
Barbarian: Attack ftw

I'd say Attack. Attack and Defense are not equal simply because in H5, creatures cannot retaliate untill AFTER an attack.

If you have high enough attack to kill enough enemies to prevent a retaliation or severely weaken the retaliation, you don't need Defense.

Attack has the potential of letting you win battles without any losses. Defense doesn't.

I chose atack and defence.THe knight have almost equal atack and defence.Human army is very strong,and with more atack and defence is almost undefeatable.Only need a clean or a bless,nothing more need. And when Klaus come in batle,game is over.
THis was a simple example.Can be more.
THe ideea is the atack and defence increase the power of the army and beat any magic.

This is my own opinion.

Attack for inferno and stronghold
Defense for dwarfs and haven
Knowledge for wizards and necromancers

I disagree. While you are right that if you have a high enough attack you can render the retaliation more or less useless, I find that I am never able to get such an attack value against factions like Sylvan, Haven and Fortress, not even while playing Inferno or Stronghold. They just have such an easy time getting completely ridiculous defense stats that most of my physical attacks are simply rendered useless.
