Just to let everyone know, the Asylum Heroes(Sorcerer and Sorceress) ride Nightmares. You can see Jeddite and Lorelei doing so in a few screenshots.

excellent

I honestly think that all these ideas are great, but I think that the most important thing is that these "steeds" should be customizable.  I don't mean pick a ride and alter it any way you wish, just that each player should not be stuck with a particular type of horse or other creature if they don't like the look of it.  I hope 3dO does good things with this.  It would just make the adventure map more enjoyable if your hero rode around (or walked around) looking the way you want him to.  Variety is the spice and longevity of ANY good thing, and for games that means maximum options to keep it new and fresh for the buyers.

There should be pros and cons to mounted and dismounted travel.  I don't think that a player should have to be too terribly disadvantaged simply because he prefers the look of his hero walking rather than riding.  As far as mounted vs. dismounted combat, maybe there are things that can be done for that without having to change much, like a mounted or joust attack option that is available prior to the combat screen.  Otherwise it wouldn't make sense that your heroes are automatically dismounted at the start of every combat, just like it doesn't make sense that they sit mounted in the background of heroes 3 combat.

One of the coolest things that 3dO did, to me, is to allow various means of travel other than riding around on a horse, such as spells like Fly, Water Walk, Dimension Door and Town Portal, or artifacts like Angel Wings.  Someone on a different thread suggested that players with certain skills should be able to negotiate certain landscape obstacles like mountain ranges.  That, to me, is one of the finest ideas I have heard in these forums.  Or how about Druids who can braciate (movement through trees via plants and vines)?  I probably did not spell that right.  It would be nice to see some heroes have the ability to tunnel as well, and this would not necessarily have to alter the adventure map too much to play.

On a slightly related note, I do hope that there are more different looking subterranean gates and monoliths.  Why should an entrance to an underground level always look like a skull?

Maybe a high-level spell for heroes with the right skill could create a permanent teleportation circle, functioning the same way a monolith does.  Of course, it would require that the spellcaster had already been to the point of destination.

I wish to goodness I could be on a creative panel for such things...

Hey how about an ostard? They are part ostrich and part horse. And instead of a Zebra to tread on the desert, how about a Camel? I hope you like my ideas.

not that it matters but......

I started a thread about this a while ago (not sure how long).  Your Ideas are cool,  and in case you haven't thought about it, the horse (or camel, or dragon) would have exp. to let it go farther and faster. either on the adventure map or in battle.  On the adventure map, if your heroe had a flying steed and all flying creatures, they could have unlimited levitation (fly over mountains, water, etc....)

Pegasus should allow only hero to fly not to his army. So if hero wants to fly past mountains he have to left his army in the ground and fly alone. Same could be true for Fly spell. And for those mounts make `em expensive, especially flying ones. Lava should hurt most monster and heroes walking on it. Hero with Nightmare should have immunity to fire (including fire damage) or then atleast horse itself would be immune to fire. Same could be true for cold. If your army don`t have jackets in winter they could freeze to death.
And lets make hero and horse separate units in battlefields.
