Vampires cause me to pause and rethink my whole strategy.  They fly across the map pretty fast, and can heal themselves if they find a weak stack of troops to prey upon.

Thats why you have to choose vampire...hard to lose vampire.And again i think everbody hate lose even one unit,every player try to minimise loses thats why almost alway choose spellcaster or ranger,except few cases

Vampires are best choice in my opinion, but for defending a town, I'll take venoms.

Venom Spawns but its a very close call.

In normal heroes on maps rich with neutrals, necromancy is way too imbalanced so you have to go with Vampires to be extra unstoppable, Venom Spawns choice is very based on map in H-IV regular but in equilibris not that much. The only problem I see with Vampires is that they cannot get positive moral or spells like bless and bloodlust.

Someone said Vampires have high HitPoints, that is ONLY true if you make a lots of them with necromancy, otherwise they get 75*3=225 hp per week with no nobiliy, they are much more fragile to spells than Venom Spawns so hit and run tactics do more damage to the Vampires.

I love venom spawns- but the power of vampires is unarguable.

My solution? Take venom spawns in the town.  With grandmaster necro, I will always have a lot more vampires than venom spawn.  Vamp growth is, what, 3 a week? I usually find myself getting around 9-12 a week on larger maps through necro.  And I don't have to pay for them.  You might as well get venom spawn- you'll have so many vamps a few more or less won't make a difference.

Basically put, I always end up with a ton of vamps, so I take venom spawn for variety and because it hardly makes a difference in power levels.

Absolutely Vamps, Although Venom Spawn is still a good creature, but like the comment I've seen before, "Not the Venom Spawn isn't good enough, just because the Vampire is too powerful." With the Life Drain Skill, Vampire can treat most of the living creature with it's (his?) good offense and defense as a Level 3 creature. So sometime have to said sadly: "Farewell, Venom baby~~"(Just like the Netherlandish forward who born at the same time with Vanistelrooy)
For me, another reason is Vampire looks so cool, the Venom Spawn looks too Disgusting(like the snot while people get cold)....

what if you choose vampires, and your opponent choose gold golem, genies and dragon golems?
the only creature you can drain are genies, but they might be a biggest threat than vampires.
though, venom spawn poison wouldn't be very useful either.
btw, who knew that the poison damage is a quarter of the attack damage? so with spells like bloodlust or precision for example, you can increase the poison damage as well.

When going against undead you have to take notice that vampires cannot be aged or drained life from ... or even be scared by the bone dragon unlike the venom spawn. Also skeletons and bone dragons have 100% extra ranged defense.

the venom is better vs the undead because unlike the vampire it does not have to get close and  take damage without being able to heal back.
why would u shoot a ranged resisted target? let the other troops take care of them

Vampires are good vs sceletons ghosts
decent against vampires bone dragons and devils
Strong against imps, cerberus, venom spawn

Venom spawn are strong against cerberus, imps
decent against skeletons, ghosts, venom spawn
WEAK against vampires, bone dragons and devils

Vampires on the other hand are mainly weaker vs only hero armies than the venom spawn.

Against death without the equilibris mod I would go Bone dragons + vampires and with equilibris I would go Bone dragons + venom spawn (cos vamps got a bit nerfed) + ghosts.

Venom + Devil vs Vamp + Bone dragon good vs vamps, pretty bad vs Bone
Venom + Bone vs Vamp + Bone good vs vamps but bad vs Bone

Even though the venom may prove more durable in battle, the vampire can be a battle winner as the most powerful creatures are lvl 4 and which one contributes more to their advantage will be victorious.

Don't forget that lifesteal is useless against mechanicals elementals and other undeads. If it is death vs death and one of the players chooses vampires it's over for him. A druid can also be a pain in the ass. A vial of binding liquid, quicksands and waterelementals will just make those vampires like totally worthless and the devils can be CC-ed, while if you have venomspawns and devils it is kind of impossible CCing both of them to keep the druid alive counting also that you have undeads in your army which should reflect in the morale of enemy troops. A nature army relying on summons is dead if you kill the druid. Of course if the main hero is an archer the vampires are very nice and should be chosen over the venomspawns since that poison will be worthless because of Magic Res(Life steal is not prevented by Magic Res in case you didn't know^^). So what I am trying to say is always keep in mind what you are against and what the opponent's strategic and tactical options are when choosing yours.

When playing Death, I always, always, ALWAYS choose vampires for a number of reasons.

1. Death's main strength is their map movement. For this reason, I choose ghosts (28) before cerberi (21), and vampires (28) before venom spawns (19). Skeletons, cerberi and venom spawns only slow me down, so I rarely bring these creatures for anything other than important endgame battles.

2. Another strength of Death is that undead creatures are difficult to stop, especially for Order, who rely much on mind spells. The venom spawn, on the other hand, can be neutralized by Forgetfulness, Blind, Berserk and Hypnotize. Also, Mass Blur can make the opposing spawns much less effective. The fact that the venom spawn can attack from a distance is not so important in an otherwise melee-oriented army.

3. The vampires are harder to kill. Even though the venom spawns have many more hit points, the vampires have a higher defense AND their life drain ability. You may manage to kill a vampire, but the moment they attack your weakest creatures, you have to kill that vampire again. In short, you are much more likely to lose a venom spawn than a vampire.

4. Grandmaster Necromancy. This is possibly the most important reason. Get GM Necromancy as soon as possible, then fight all the neutral stacks you can find. When you are finished, your level 3 stack will be MUCH more powerful than your level 4, and winning the scenario will rarely be a problem.

5. The venom spawn has a melee penalty. Without the vampires, the battle is now just as likely to happen on your side of the battlefield as the other, and if the enemy has a strong melee creature standing by the spawns, they are suddenly much weaker.
