Subraces (This threads for you, Preserver!)
Got this idea from Preserver and D&D.
Okay, in addition to the standard dwarves, elves and halflings, there would be several subraces for each. Those subraces are:
Elves:
Drow (Dark) Elves: Evil subbterrainian versions of the elf, this subrace has black skin and white hair. The HOMM versoin WOULD be a shooter, but would use black crossbows tipped with a paralysing venom from some subbterrainian creature (40% to paralyse for 5 rounds).
Aquatic Elves: Light blue skinned, underwater version of the elf. Attacks with underwater crossbows.
Gray Elves: The most noble of the elves, they have either silver hair with amber eyes, or pale golden hair and violet eyes.
Wild Elves: Also known as Grugach, Wild Elves are barbaric and tribal. Their skin is dark brown and their hair is black to light brown, turning silvery white with age. They attack with rugged composite longbows and short swords. No melee penalty.
Dwarves:
Deep Dwarves: Subterrainian neutral dwarves that live far below ground and have little contact with suface dwellers.
Derro Dwarves: Degenerate and extremelly evil dwarf-human crossbreeds that live in the underdark. Immensly cruel, they love to capture suface dwellers as slaves and enjoy torturing them to death (Esspecially humans).
Duergar Dwarves: Sometimes called Gray Dwarves, these evil beings live in the Underdark as well. Duagar are bald (Even the females) and wear greyish clothing designed to blend in to stone.
Mountain Dwarves: These dwarves live deep in the mountains, and are isolated from other dwarves. They claim to be the first dwarven race, and that all other dwarven races decended from them.
Halflings:
Tallfellows: Almost identical to normal halflings, they are taller and slimer than their kin, and enjoy the company of elves.
Deep Halflings: Shorter and stockier than their kin, they like jewels and rare metals. They enjoy the company of dwarves as much as Tallfellows enjoy the company of elves.
Those are my subraces!

What's the point?
Why bother with that for this game? If you did, nearly every town would have some sort of dwarf or elf, and what fun would that be? I'd rather have 66 different creatures than 66 "different" dwarves, elves, halflings, etc.

it would be nice
BUT then the game would be called Elves of Might and Magic...
there is no point in reducing the Eldar to dragons... before all you dragon lovers jump on me let me explain... in HoMM3 there are WAY too many dragons (red, black, gold, faerie, green, azure, crystal, bone, ghost and rust) thus making the dragon unit a little too common...
On the other hand there are only two races of Elves (Wood and Grand) making them all the more unique and special... I would LOVE to play a game with zillions of Elves, as long as there were enough creatures (non-elven) to match... the same goes for Dwarves and Halflings...
given the variety of elven races there could be an elven unit in almost every town (even Academy).. as much as I like the Fair Folk though, I would prefer a variety of non-elven units (with two or three Elves) to a plethora of Elves (with two or three non-elves)...
may Elbereth be with you RMS...

Yeah...
...those elven races are to cool! Like the dwarves and halflings too... For those who can't take the idea, don't worry. This shall and will never be in the game, it's just fun to make the ideas... Hmmm... Maybe a single dark elf could join the game though...

Not that this is impossible... For example, in Age of Wonders there are 12 races and each of them has units from one race:
Elves have Elven archer, Elven swordsman, Elven mage
Halflings have Halfling archer, Halfling swordsman, Halfling mage
Orcs have Orc archer, Orc swordsman, Orc mage...
Of course, not all of the names are the same (for example, the Halfling archers are not archers but Slingers) but that's not so important. So there can be a town with different types of Elves... But I don't think that it will be interesting to have a town consisting only of Elves - an Elven town. This works in Age of Wonders because the different races don't have only archers, swordsmen and mages - the Elves have also Fairy, Unicorn, Nature Elemental... but there are 12 creatures per town! In HoMM4 it will be very difficult to have different creatures - which would you choose - Aquatic elf or Grey elf?
And this is one more thing thatfits perfectly in Age of Wonders and won't work in the Heroes series... according to me.

Hmmmmm... Well, I think a dwarven, halfling or Elven town would be nice, as it would facilitate creating a LOTR campaign.
I also like what you said about in Age of Wonders they have a mage, swordsman and archer for each of the major races.

Although I was wondering along this idea, what if we were able to split up the castles into three groups: "good" "neutral" and "evil" It would be quite a lot more complicated, but with the smaller towns and smaller numbers of creatures it is more feasible than in Homm3
Good- Haven and Academy
Neutral- Preserve and Stronghold
Evil- Asylum and Necropolis
When an "evil" town takes over a neutral or good town, it "converts" the town to evil. So for instance a primarily Asylum player (who started out in an Asylum town) captures a Haven town, instead of getting elves, unicorns and such, he would get the following line up:
Black Knight- undead equivalent of the Champion.
Dark Angel- raises undead
Fallen Monk- hurls dark bolts of energy/evil spells
Poison Ballista- does poison damage
etc.
They would also only get spells of their schools, so an evil player could only get "neutral" or "evil" spells. When a neutral player takes a town it has no effect because it is entirely neutral in its alignment. When a "good" player takes over an evil town, it would go something like this. So say a Haven player takes over a Necropolis town:
Light Dragon- Bone Dragon's good equivalent. Instead of causing panic causes morale boost.
Spirit- good equivalent of Ghost.
Now this may entirely be a dumb newbie idea, but I think it would be interesting and maybe lend to extended lifespan of the game, and would lend itself more to the "realism" fans of Homm. This way, you wouldn't be able to cast prayer and heal when you slaughter peasants for raising skeletons at the same time. Maybe make it a little more fun to play "evil" or "good"

neutral will have a significant disadvantage it seems then. Just drop the neutral parts and make preserve good and stronghold evil, that way it might even work I guess.

You know, I think a drow would be extrememly insulted if he was referred to as a "sub-race". He'd probably sue you for discrimination, leading to the popular sequel to HOMM IV, Lawyers of Might and Magic. This, of course, would be followed up by Certified Public Accountants of Might and Magic. After all, if you hire a bunch of dragons, you're certainly going to want a receipt so that you can claim them as a business expense and get a tax deduction.

lol, bort.
Drow elves are a bit overrated if you ask me... but no one did, so oh well.
I really liked that evil converting good idea, but I think what's in the thread is a little extreme, something alone those lines would be cool, like at least the mage guilds being somewhat twisted.
