why do you call it a loo.  I never hear that term used in America.  Is it supposed to be more sophisticated or something?
I personally prefer calling it "the crapper".

Interesting - loo is pretty much a working class term - so I don't think it is sophisticated at all

I will research it for you if you really are interested - dunny is another term we use.

I wouldn't call it a crapper though, because I don't think you are actually meant to crap in a urinal  I guess you could?   Do you call urinal's crappers too?

while I'm here, here's a toilet with fish living in it.

OK It got the better of me {I love words...}

Here is the wiki for Loo:
Quote:
The origin of the (chiefly British) term loo is unknown. However there are numerous theories. Some of these are:

   * That it derives from the term "gardyloo" (a corruption of the French phrase gardez l'eau loosely translated as “watch out for the water!”) which was used in medieval Edinburgh when chamber pots were emptied from a window onto the street. However the first recorded usage of "loo" comes long after this term became obsolete.

   * That the word comes from nautical terminology; loo being an old fashioned word for lee. The standard nautical pronunciation (in British English) of leeward is looward or lieuward. Early ships were not fitted with toilets but the crew would urinate over the side of the vessel. However it was important to use the leeward side. Using the windward side would result in the urine blown back on board. (The phrases 'pissing into the wind' and 'spitting into the wind' also refer to this problem.) Even on modern yachts, most (male) yachtsmen, whilst at sea, find it more convenient to go to the loo, than to use the heads.

   * That an early British toilet manufacturer produced a a model of cistern named "Waterloo" (in honour of the Battle of Waterloo, and the term derives from 'going to the Waterloo', and then abbreviated to simply as 'going to the `loo'.

crapper

Origin

Popular wisdom attributes this to be derived from Thomas Crapper {an Englishman} (1836 - 1904), the supposed inventor of the flush toilet. Unfortunately, Thomas Crapper didn't invent the flush toilet. He holds nine patents for plumbing-related inventions, including three for water closets, but flush lavatory, properly called the 'Silent Valveless Water Waste Preventer' was patented in 1819 by Albert Giblin.

Crapper is the name that people remember though. He was certainly well-known in his day as a sanitary engineer. He had a thriving plumbing business and was sanitary engineer for several households of members of the royal family.

Like the widespread, and probably misguided, rejection of Nelson's deathbed quotation - 'kiss me Hardy', it has become commonplace to see the association of the name Crapper with toilets and defecation dismissed as an urban myth. As in Nelson's case though there doesn't seem to be any good reason for that. The word crap, either as a noun or as a verb, doesn't appear in English before Crapper's lifetime.

So they are both Pommy terms - I guess the Poms that landed in the US used the term crapper more than Loo, or maybe it is because Loo is actually less sophisticated than crapper - we were settled by convicts you know

Settled, that's a good word for it.
Here's how I heard it:
Most of the white inhabitants are descended from hardened criminals who Mother England deliberately sent as far away as geographically possible to avoid contamination by their putrid gene pool.

No offence but I've been picking on Pandora too much lately and since Friday is Soup Day I figured I'd give you a hard time.  Just remember, New Zealand is always right above you to serve as Australia's Canada.  Go ahead, have fun with it.

I must be slipping - I should actually have used the word 'invaded'
{although I like to think that it was the Poms that invaded Australia and slaughted the indigenous people, and that I am a decendent of the convicts and Irish porpers instead }

I could start picking on the kiwis yar  We do share a similar relationship to the Yanks/Canadians, although they aren't above us LOL.

{did you mean Indonesia?}

I take no offense but it is fun playing with you here

I hate to play defensive, but nowadays only a tiny fraction of a percentage of the population of Australia is convict descendent.

That's what I picked up in the years of history I was forced to take before I could drop it

and on topic?

You busted me

I spend all my savings travelling the world searching for wierd and wonderful crappers to use, I get some looks in the male lav's but what can I say - for some reason these are more dedicated shrines then the ladies, where the only important aspect is the mirrors, and the long beam for the pillow fights

Here's one with an interest in public sanitation:
