Fortress - summary

ok, so..

the abilities are known, so I'll skip them and focus on stats and damage per week. Keep in mind that Dpw doesn't take initiative into consideration.

Defender:

A: 1
D: 5
Dam: 1-2
HP: 12
sp: 4
init: 9
growth: 36
damage/week: 44

This unit is strictly defensive, doing only a bit more damage than the assassins with lowest dpw (not counting their poisoning strike.) The abilities are kinda nice to use them for easy mine-cleaning against shooters, though, and 12 HP (only 2 less than assassins) along with 5 defense (2 more than assassins) makes them a very sturdy level 1.

Assassins: 32 (+14 poison)
Sprites: 40
Defenders: 44
Master Gremlins: 52
Skeleton Archers: 57
Conscripts: 60
Familiars: 69

Skirmisher

A:4
D 4
Dam: 2-3
HP: 12
Sp: 4
Init: 9
growth: 28
damage/week : 62

62 is nothing impressive again, but their ability is good. They don't offer much beyond that, though. Not really _that_ sturdy.

Obisdian Gargs: 36
Blood Furies: 54
Skirmishers: 62
Plague Zombies: 63
War Dancers: 63
Horned Overseers: 69
Marksmen: 106

Blackbear rider

A: 6
D: 14
Dam: 5-6
HP: 30
Sp: 7
Init: 11
Growth: 14
damage/week: 71

This unit offers incredible staying power with 30 HP and defense of a level 5 unit. As all dwarven guys, it doesn't pack a punch, though. Fortunately it's very fast and with nice initiative. combined with rune of berserk, Blackbear riders are quite effective.

Squires: 63
Cerberi: 70 (140 for two-headed, 210 for three-headed)
Blackbear Riders: 71
Steel Golems: 99
Minotaur Guards: 119
Master Hunters: 164

(spectres' stats changed a bit, and I'm too lazy to count)

Berserkers

A: 7
D: 7
Dam: 3-8
HP: 25
Speed: 5
Init: 12
Growth: 12 (16 with building)
Damage/week: 62 (83 with buliding, 106 with activated ability.)

Well, 106 is quite good, but it cripples their defences. Still, makes them quite hard hitters. 12 initiative is nice too. Unfortunately, they can't compare with powerhouses like imperial griffins, but with rune of berserk (or rune of dragonform) they can be very dangerous.

Berserkers: 62 (no building, no rage)
Arch Mages: 70
Grim Raiders: 84 (126 with charge)
Succubus MistressesL 87 (above 100 if counting their chain shot)
Vampire Lords: 88
Druid Elders: 97
Imperial Griffins: 98 (much more with battledive)
Berserkers: 106 (with building, with rage)

Rune Patriarchs

A: 10
D: 9
Dam: 14-18
HP: 70
Sp: 3
Init: 11
Growth: 6 (7 with building)
Damage/week: 96 (without building), 112 (with builidng)

Decent damage, adv. deflect missle, great hp, good initiative and very easy to utilise cross shot. One of the best shooters. Sadly, their only offensive spell is firewall, which is.. well.. not too impressive. Also, mark of fire is good for heroes that want to abuse ignite.

Inquisitors: 82
Deep Hydras: 86 (all around ~~)
Rune Pat. 96
Rune Pat. 112 (+building)
Nightmares: 118
War Unicorns: 122
Archliches: 157
Djinns: 190

Warlords

A: 15
D: 25
Dam: 9-14
HP: 120
Speed: 8
Init: 11
Growth: 4
Dam/week: 57

yes, it's not a mistake, warlords do less than a full pop of conscripts. But - their chain lightning gives them a lot of boost. Because of teleport and huge init, there is no way to stop warlords to attack ALL of your stacks in first turn, scoring very nice damage. Imagine them with rune of berserk and don't say there are weak : )
The only really, really, REALLY sick thing is that they need 20 gems (!) for dwelling and 10 for upgrade. and since berserkers and rune mages - and the rune shrines - also need gems, I doubt they will be used much in MP, remaining pretty much unobtainable on less-rich maps.

Warlords: 57
Ancient Treants: 109
Shadow Mat.: 132
Pitlords: 141
paladins: 170 (way above 200 when jousting at full distance)
Raksasha Rajas: 186
Wraights: 198

Magma Dragons

A: 30
D: 40
Dam: 40-50
HP: 280
Speed: 5
Init: 8
Growth: 2
damage/week: 180

Mixed blessing. On one hand, they are nearly invincible with 40 def and the highest HP in game, on other - they are slow, do low damage, have little initiative, mediocre specials and their base dwelling nees 20 sulfur, and 10 more for upg. Don't forget that there is something called "rune of berserking", boosting their damage to 360 and making them not only the most durable, but also the most powerful. Let's say it straight - without runes, they suck, so if you didn't got rune of berserking, don't even think about them. If you managed to get it, though - by all means go for those creatures.

Spectral Drags: 120
Magma Dragons: 180
Spectral Drags: 180 (with tomb)
Archangels: 205
Arch Devils: 209 (seems much more in the game anyway )
Titans: 220 (It never felt that much, really ~~)
Black Dragons: 230

whew.

even though the army may seem weak, there are abilities that help a lot your rune magic. Fine rune - 50% chance to avoid paying for the rune, and there is a guy who has additional +20% chance bonus to fine rune and 1% more per every level. So, after a bit of level-ups, you may start tossing berserk and dragonform runes like crazy, giving your army double damage with berserk and dragonform, making it the strongest army in the game. The only BAD thing is that runes appear randomly in your rune guild, so - if you got something else than berserk rune - you may have a lot of trouble. Not sure if there is any other level 5 rune than dragonfrom, though. Anyway - it's all about luck here).

In case you wonder,
Rune of berserk: gives the unit chance of double-attack for one ore. Cheap and even though it says it gives a "chance", it worked for me 99% of the time when I was testing it @ duelmode.
Rune of dragonform: +100% Attack and Defence and spell immunity for one turn. Doesn't work for dragons of any kind, mind you. 1 sulfur and 1 ore, if I remember correct.

Well, after more battles in duel mode, the armies of fortress didn't impress me. They lack a really strong hitter, and after eliminating warlords and reducing the numbers of magma dragons, fortress army can mainly stall helplessly without doing much.

Perhaps in a standard game it's a bit better for fortress.

I've played around a bit on some multi maps so I can give my practical impressions.

The warlord is very strong for a first attack.  If the enemy troops are massed you can hit all of them with lightning strike that travels from one creature to the next.  Also, although the base damage for the warlord isn't great the lightning hits nearly doubling his damage output, unless the target creature is immune.  Yes, they do cost gems.

The Shieldguards are so numerous and so high defensively that even though they don't do a whole lot of damage they do enough and I only ever lose around 10 or less on retaliation.  Doesn't matter when you have 250.

The bearriders don't hit very hard and die pretty quick but they are good for stopping shooters.

Bezerkers were terrible, not enough of them, and no defense.

Rune magician is pretty good, reminds me of the lich, doesn't hit too hard but it does hit multiple and they have good staying power.  Personally I think Firewall is a great spell.

Magma dragon is ok...it's a dragon fire breath etc... the magma shield is pretty weak but nice against phatnoms etc.

The runes are nice, my favorite is the one that gives incorporeal for one turn.

Edit: I left out the skirmishers, this level 2 unit is a shooter who's special ability if it triggers halves speed and knocks 30% off initiative...I think it's too powerful.
