The Fate of Heroes III....

The recent dash for information over HoMM4 has rather left me out in the cold a little bit. I'll be honest and say that at the moment, HoMM4 doesn't really interest me. There is no doubt that I will buy it and play the game to death, but the altar of wishes forum is spoiling the surprise of HoMM4 for me. Thus, I always try and avoid 'new pictures' and 'new heroes' and 'new' stuff about the up and coming release. I will learn it all once I buy it I'm certain.

There will be a shifting of the guard. From Heroes 3 to Heroes 4. Heroes 3 is probably the best online strategy game I've ever seen and I'm sure most HoMM fans will agree (agree with me DAMMIT!). And I've always thought that Heroes 3 will be relegated to the realms of Homm2 and such. A forgotten graveyard of has been games that nobody plays anymore...

To throw such an awesome game to the scrapheap is, in my opinion, a poor idea. I will still play HoMM3 after HoMM4 comes out (yes, I am nostalgic, lol), but I'm wondering, will everyone forget what such a great game Heroes 3 has been for us? Heroes 3 has been the turning point for the HoMM series and we owe part 3 more than any of us could imagine.

Will you forget Heroes 3 once part 4 comes out?

In my case, I always move on and never look back from the past because that how life is, it's like a toy that you just dump when it's old, it's like an old movie for you to just ignore it, it's like an old cloth you've been wearing for a long time and guess what? Eveything change! As for Heroes III it will only be a memory of the future and it's improvements. I will forget it, since I alway look ahead and that's the way I am.

BTW, Excellent Thread!

has any of you forgotten

..I think not... Heroes 3 will always be remembered and played after HoMM4 ships out... the reasons for that are:
1. HoMM3 is a great game and like HoMM2 a legend of it's own...
2. the changes in the gameplay will propably make people return to HoMM3, at least till they learn the new (and way better) system...

I'm going to give you a definite example and tell me what you think.

When mm6 came out, every single fan played it, played it, played it to death. The same thing happened when mm7 came out. And mm8. However, when asked, 90% of the guys say they ADORE mm6, like mm7 and enjoy mm8. The first game they have played 10 times, the second- twice and the third several times. Yes, they might have done it a long way ago but the oldest version remains the favourite one. I don't think they'll forget mm6 though they are drooling at the thought of Legends and mm9. And h4.

All you need to know to figure out my answer to this question is that I still have Heroes 1 and 2 installed on my hard drive, along with H3.

I'm sure that once the new wears off H4, I'll still go back and play H3 for a different gaming experience.

Unforgettable

Don't worry. At least in my case, I will continue playing HOMM3 cos it's the game I've mastered most. Nowadays I'm a bit tired of it and guess what I'm playing... HOMM2!! And enjoying a lot. I'm now getting some Black Dragon ratings I never achieved before I played HOMM3.

I think the point is that both games (HOMM2 and HOMM3) offers different gameplay to you, so they can coexist (a fact that doesn't apply to HOMM1, cos in my opinion HOMM2 covers and improves all HOMM1 features). I feel that HOMM4 will be also different and I'll find myself playing all of them depending on the mood of the moment. Of course, the first months of HOMM4 will be exclusive! :-)

What was h2 like?

I never played it but they said it was a simple game "the way the chess is simple". And that it had bright colours "when I turned it on, the colors shouted at me". But they all liked it most. I still can't understand why.

For me HoMM 3 is dead...

It's been two and half years when it was released. The game wasn't so stunning at first but after while playing it I wouldn't say it was great but good. Very good.
Especially as multiplaying because Computer AI is lacking still.
However there are many things that could have been better in HoMM3 and I have believe HoMM IV will change these things to better and at the same time being unique game.

I have played too much HoMM3. As a singleplayer game it has been long dead but as multiplayer it has given itch now and then. However when I took it to my hands in the summer for one more time to play before HoMM IV comes out I suddenly fell that I couldn't play it anymore. I was only trying to fill the HoMM hole in my soul that has been there since first playing HoMM and then not playing it for sometime.

Somebody said that HoMM isn't game but part of life. I agree. I have many other "hobbies" and things that I consider being part of me and one could say that I'm loser as I have my place in my heart for computer game. But I wouldn't be telling the truth if I wouldn't say how I feel about certain games. I play so few computer games that some of them are essential for how I use my time. In life you have to choose were you put your time and it as good to put time to computer games than to human relationships, at least in my opinion. HoMM is one of the things I have used countless hours of my time and I wish it could continue.

Sometimes it's time to look back and be little nostalgic but sometimes it's just better to move on and choose the new one as playing the old would be step backwards to time that anymore exist. I have noticed the same thing with many other things in example with friends. If that friendship is over it's over. Be fond of your memories but remember that it's the present time that we call as life.

And let that HoMM3 be in that shelf were it belongs. It's different story of course if HoMMIV fails to give the experience it's precessors gave us.

We have to just wait and see. That what life is all about.
I believe it will surprise us if we give it a chance.

HoMM3 has been very successful for most of us who play online. ToH has been at the core of that success and ToH will move on to HoMM4. But will we? Has anyone thought that perhaps our addiction to the present game is so strong that HoMM4 may not be all that it's cracked up to be? How many of us will decide that HoMM4 is not as good as HoMM3? What would happen then?

I'm not trying to put Homm4 down, I'm really really looking forward to it. I started playing Homm3 late in it's shelf life and admittedly, I'm no ToH general and my knowledge about the game is lacking compared to seasoned campaigners. HoMM4 will be a chance for me to start on a level playing field with everybody and a chance to spend the next few years honing my HoMM4 skills. It's a clean sheet of paper for everyone.

That clean sheet of paper will see a hierarchy that will probably be vastly different to what tournament people know now. Those of us who are good at Heroes 3 may be dismal at Heroes 4. And if they are no longer the greatest of the great, will they turn around and say 'I don't like this game, HoMM3 was better?'

Let's face it, most gamers agree that Warlords 2 was way better than W3. Sequels are known to fail on occaision (let's not talk about Hollywood right now, lol!). So far the Heroes series has seen a good, yet predictable progression. HoMM4 is a brand new game, different in almost every way, yet retaining enough of a Might and Magic feel to link it with it's predecessors. Heroes 3 is at the pinnacle of turn based strategy in my opinion, and part 4 looks like taking that mantle to new levels.

But what will we all do if it doesn't?

the Fate of HoMMIV?...

Would be right question then.
As said it remains to be seen but let speculate little as we all like it so much.

I believe it will be hit. I was kinda surprised that the game was put after Christmas. This may have been as the designers have felt that it isn't ready yet. I think that promises a lot. Or there may be some other issues behind it but I rather not start guessing again...
What we must consider is that there will be lots of new players if game succeeds as people don't want to buy HoMM3 anymore as it is already old game and want to experience HoMM. Only choice is HoMM IV then. So it's not only those veterans that make any tourney. It's also those newbies.

I'm not sure have you Shae played HoMM2 that time when it was the greatest game ever but I remember that time and this same conservation was going on. People were saying that they will stick in the HoMM2 if HoMM3 won't be so good and everybody found something bad from it compared to it's precessor even if the game wasn't out yet. I have said that HoMM series haven't found it's peek yet. HoMM3 was close but I think there could be even "better" game. Of course many things will change and not veterans will like this change but so many new players will come around that those few veterans voice won't light up the dark. It's possible there will be HoMM3 tournaments still for those who don't like HoMMIV or just want to play "the good old" game. This is the case always. But somehow I feel that people will shift their sightings to HoMMIV and forget little by little HoMM3.

If HoMMIV fails the story is lot of different. Then it's possible whole series will fall. I think there is huge pressure for HoMMIV to be the new hit game as it is with most of the games that have succesful precessors. I think there is huge order for fantasygames right now and I think it would need huge error from NWC to make HoMMIV failure. It's different story do seasoned veterans or hardcore gamers of HoMM like the new version. I believe we will play whatever HoMM game there is available and what we consider as best but it can be totally different story for massmarketplayers who have just bought another game and not unique HoMM game. I would like to see HoMM continue so succesful as it has been so we can always find something new about this serie that we like.

In some form HoMM3 gaming will continue as our "little" gentleman Lord Woock has continued his playing of HoMM2. But that doesn't mean that we rest care about HoMM2 and some of us haven't even played it. Some of us know only HoMM3 and I think this will be the case with HoMMIV too.

So Shae, do you want to be new Lord Woock who wanders around this forum talking about HoMM in general and about HoMM3 when everybody is talking about HoMMIV or even HoMMV? (No offence Lord Woock as he is needed here as much as I am) Whether you stick with HoMM3 or change to HoMMIV will be your choice and thing is that both are good choices as it is your choice.
But for me it's HoMMIV or no HoMM at all...

My point of view...

I am still playing HOMM 2 and I still enjoy it very much...I will also keep playing HOMM 3...and not because I'm nostalgic but because every one of them has something special on their own...and each one gives you a different feeling...

I know one thing for certain and that is I will never be destined to live life in the past. I reminisce sometimes, but like you, Sha, it's either HoMM4 or no HoMM at all for me. If HoMM4 turns out to be a disappointment, then there are loads and loads of online games out there that I've kept a blind eye to because I love HoMM so much.

Maybe I love the people who play HoMM more than I love the game itself.

For me...

...H4 is the future, but I'll never forget H3, and I'm still gonna play the old games... I think H4 is not to be taken as a ordinary "follow up" to H3. It's a whole new game, and that's what I believe the game designers are heading for. As I said, it's more like a brand new game than a new version of the old Heroes games. And that's exactly what keeps the old games alive! They have some qualities H4 doesn't have, and therefor they will still be played. That's the way I think it's going to be, and that's the way it should be...
