1. I presume here your problem. You MUST use creature wizard OR..
If you just want to replace redrawed pictures of the same unit (with the same quantity of frames) - you must load in DEF maker the DEF list (in the new format) to make it work.
2. Palette cannot be the source of crash as i know, but if you recolored the dragon you should change it to fit the new colors you added.

I didn't recolor... I took deflist from crystal dragon and put my own deep drake instead Guess I did something wrong there
I am working on making everything into 256 bitmaps and 10 first specific colors...

Well, of course if you got an exception.  Did you pack more (or less) frames than it was? Speaking the truth such problems seldom can be resolved theoretically - as a rule you get the def and test it, so i hardly can tell something more.
