After We Make Love...

After Making Love We Hear Footsteps
This is a poem that I have broke down it’s meaning for.
The poem was written by Galway Kinnel

For I can snore like a bullhorn
or play loud music
or sit up talking with any reasonably sober Irishman
and Fergus will only sink deeper
into his dreamless sleep, which goes by all in one flash,
but let there be that heavy breathing
or a stifled come-cry anywhere in the house
and he will wrench himself awake
and make for it on the run - as now, we lie together,
after making love, quiet, touching along the length of our bodies,
familiar touch of the long-married,
and he appears - in his baseball pajamas, it happens,
the neck opening so small
he has to screw them on, which one day may make him wonder
about the mental capacity of baseball players -
and flops down between us and hugs us and snuggles himself to sleep,
his face gleaming with satisfaction at being this very child.

In the half darkness we look at each other
and smile
and touch arms across his little, startling muscled body -
this one whom habit of memory propels to the ground of his making,
sleeper only the mortal sounds can sing awake,
this blessing love gives again into our arms.

Galway Kinnell

This poem caught my eye by the transparent title first and foremost. I thought to myself, with a grin, that they had written a poem all about me. I knew right away that this poem was going to consist of familiarity for me. It is about two people making love after the child is put to bed and they feel they are safe now to sneak away from the bedside to discover one another again. You can tell by the way it is written that this feat had been attempted in the past and more than once the pitter patter of tiny footsteps echoed in the hallway. It is described that “Fergus” the child, could sleep through any noise presented to him in his “dreamless sleep,” but the sounds of heavy breathing or the sense of love being toyed with from down the hall came-and “he will wrench himself awake and make a run for it.”
With words written so well that you can feel the sigh of the characters is really what gets me about poems and literature in general. This one did that for me, I could hear the parents sigh as the boy came and the upheaval of the serene feeling of holding one another after making love and finding why they are here to begin with. The author makes reference to the pajamas that have been squeezed over the child’s head because they are probably his favorite and even though his head has outgrown them his bond is still there with his favorite jammies. They are asked, “Are you loving and snuggling? May I join you?” I thought my heart would sink as those words went from the page and struck an inner core.
I have three children and I will never forget the times that we would begin to explore each other and it was like the children knew that we were about to become one and they were not included in that half hour session (no offense to the ex husband). Children revolve around themselves and expect us as parents to revolve around them, so there is this keen since of selfishness when the parents are not going to be focused on them. I would shriek as our sweaty bodies would pull away and one would roll off to the other side of the cold bed. We would pull the covers up to our necks and await the sounds of little voices at the door, “Mommy are you sleeping? Can I come in I’m scared?” We knew that our time was up and if we had another chance sometime in the week, we understood that it most likely be a rerun of the time before.
I love the use of words through out the poem but what struck my the most was, “familiar touch of the long-married.” It was made in a positive light that being married for a long period of time was a good thing. It seems as though you hear things like, “Well we have been together for thirty years but that is thirty years to damn long.” It was refreshing in the since that even though I’m divorced, I have hope that I too will be using that same thought process someday again.
At the end of the poem the love birds have this little one between them as he “snuggles himself to sleep.” There is no element of surprise but only a vision of what has been seen before and will be again many times. The dad is writing this and makes little commentary about how his wife feels. I can tell you first hand most of the time the man is more put off by this than the women. We understand that even though this is the wonderful act that gave us this child; it is the child that is the wonderful act now.
I remember the long sighs that we would take and at the same time that little one in between us with the thin warm arm lazily flopped across the both of ours necks, was a comfort all in itself. I welcomed it and despised it all at the same time; I have learned now that I want that back more than any love making session in the world. My two still crawl in bed sometimes with me and I stroke their hair and just watch them grow right in front of me. I know that before too long my heart will cry for those nights that once made me sigh.

Yeah . . .

Nice discussion violent_flower. I enjoyed reading it. I experience this too. And yes, the man is much more turned off by it. We have learned that shutting door and locking it means nothing. They all bang on the door, rattle the knob, attempt talking to Mommy under the door through the 2 centimeter crack . . . We have found that the only way for us to be together is to wait until the children are either gone or asleep. If they're in the house and awake then it's impossible.

"After we make love"? This thread is against the Holy Morale! Imagine if some of the HOMM juniors (I know nine year old kids who are quite got at HV) look at this thread! They will become what you unmorally scum call "horny". I want this thread locked and permanently removed!

(And while I added a little role playing in this post, I really think that this is harmful to 0-15 year old kids).

I am 15 and I can ascertain you that this does not bring any harm, nor do the other threads where you posted your opinions. This forum is universal, no age restrictions - small children should not care about visiting these threads, nor would they be affected anyhow even if they read it imho .

They do. Many young ones are interested in these unmoraly bad things. You are risking their morale and therby their place in heaven!

That is mere slander. I have never said I am perfect, I just try to do right!

Judgemental actions at a game forum? That was the funniest thing I have ever heard anyone said here at HC. Sure, god is going to punish me for saying that Necropolis is strong.

Ok first, are you being serious? I need to know this before I cut off your air supply little boy… I don’t take kindly to spammers clogging up a thread of mine that is by no means offensive to anyone. So just let me know if you are being serious or not so that we can sit and have a nice chat.

Cut of my air supply? Yes try to find me, I can give you a free map of Stockholm if you want that. (Since when can a Woman strangle a teenager boy anyway?)

You should learn what a spammer is. I am just expressing my opinions, not making three posts with just '!%"¤#"¤#/]€$€£2' things.

To answer your question, yes I believe in Morale and Ethics and in God.

Well congratulations you believe in God and have morals and ethics. Where would you like me to send your cookie? I know what a spammer is and the best of the best are on here Kookie and Panda Bear, my favs.) You are not even old enough to go to the store and buy candy let alone get on my thread and talk to me about morals and ethics. You believe in God, then you know that we shall not judge, SO GET OFF MY ***!

The place of others in Heaven is neither my responsibility nor my concern. The thread comprises a beautiful rendition of two people that are in love and have children together who can’t get time to make love due to little ones floating around. It is a cute poem and in no way does anything such as, put those young minds that should not be concerning themselves with adult conversation, at risk.

Go find a Gi Joe and let me know how your next bubble bath goes…
If you want to hang with the big dogs quit pissing like a pup.

Candy? I don't buy that, unhealthy.

For the rest of your post, there is no beauty in sin. The only love where there is true beauty is in the love to God. And don't talk to me like an American negro boy, everyone knows that we Europeans (not including French people) are much smarter than you human-like walking Danish pastries called Americans (does not include Moral Majority).
