HC, meet Dvorak...Dvorak, HC
So I'm using the Dvorak keyboard layout right now. This is an alternate keyboard layout designed several years ago that was designed to speed up typing. Although right at the moment I'm rather slow at it. It does seem rather intuitive actually. And I can tell that it does make the fingers travel less when you are typing.
My brain is sizzling right now from all the neuron building action that is taking place. I am determined however to see this through to completion. The biggest problem might be that the shortcut keys are all different.
Here is an excellent website that will explain everything in much better detail
I've only been slogging away at this for half an hour but I already like it better. QWERTY is so clunky compared.
You can switch layouts in the control panel if you have windows. Not sure about the others, although there's more info in that website up above. Also if you have 98SE, ME, NT, 2000 or XP there is a utility here that will allow you to toggle easily between Dvorak and normal clunky.
I've already got the layout memorized although I'm still hella slow.
It's SUPADUPA!
any takers?
Edit:
typing test
The test I tried was "Strategic Alliances with Competitors"
QWERTY
66 WPM
1 mistakes
Net speed: 65 WPM
accuracy 98%
Dvorak
3 WPM
0 mistakes
Net Speed: 3 WPM
accuracy 100%
You see? My accuracy has already improved!
I'm going to be making periodic posts as my typing improves...

Very interesting Fog! Thanks for sharing!
I remember that when I learnt about Dvorak and the benefits it was supposed to offer to users, I went directly to some computer stores asking for a Dvorak-Keyboard. Guess what? They were all looking at me as if I were an alien! I can't remember if I tried though to get some info on the web at that time ('98). As a result, this concept pretty soon "fell" somewhere in the back of my mind. I 'll sure give it a try soon! Thanks again for the info.

QWERTY keyboard was designed actually designed to be slow and clunky when it first came out, because it was used on typewriters where if you typed too fast all the keys would get stuck, and the idea was to stop that from happening.
But I'm far too used to this keyboard to change now...

It doesn't take long to memorize the layout actually. It does take time though to learn how to type faster than 3 words a minute.

no way, it just kind of bounces back and forth between the hands. It was designed that way

When I think about it, not only am I too lazy to re-learn the keyboard format, it'd probably mess me up mentally with all the weird key placements. I see no real benefit from faster typing (other than to show off). My own pace is good enough.

"Strategic Alliances with Competitors"- Dec. 12, 2006
Dvorak
23 WPM
0 mistakes
Net Speed: 23 WPM
accuracy 100%
I’ve found that typing Dvorak is a major brain re-wire. I’ve gotten good at typing familiar words very quickly (there, and, what, though, etc…) But any word that is outside that realm still takes concentration. It slows you down even further if are trying to concentrate while you type.
I think that typing is very similar to speech in that you tend to memorize words in their entirety. Every word represents a particular pattern of keystrokes that eventually becomes ingrained in your memory. If you meet a word that you haven’t seen before then that is when you have to slow down and figure it out a letter at a time.
Typing Dvo though is still more comfortable though even though I’m still at one-third to one-half speed.

Dvorak is supposed to be relatively easy to learn and master. (By easy, I mean easier than QWERTY. ) I've been wanting to give it a try. Maybe after these exams.
Here's what I got for the normal keyboard.
I used to be around 100. Today's not a good day for typing, I guess...
Edit: I remember taking another typing test once that didn't underline the word you are supposed to be typing. I ended up missing one word, which means my entire test was shifted by 1 word. I ended up with a speed of 98 and an accuracy of 5% or something.
