Paris can be expensive but trust me, it's nowhere near UK (ie London). The reason why I take France out of the picture is that I've never met anywhere else more unfriendly and unwelcoming people. That's generalizing of course but I arrived at this conclusion after communicating on a daily basis with French hotels. If am I pay for a vacation I'd want to see accommodating folks, not frowning faces.
London is indeed quite costly. From the point of view of budget visitors we'd have to give up restaurant eating because it costs. And I don't mean places with tablecloths. ;-)
Germany on the other hand... the people in general like tourists, so it's not hard to blend in. There are some nice places to visit - such as Frankfurt, Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Cologne. Frankfurt for example is a very cheap place to go, besides there is a huge international airport there, the drawback is there isn't much to see there. However, I can't think of another place where a 4*, high-class hotel would cost only $60 with the breakfast for 2.
Cologne is a gorgeous place to see.
Vienna is an excellent place as well. Castles and history, it's rich and full. Now the prices... unless it's winter.
Spain is a country with great tourist sites and the prices are quite good as well.

I would love to go visit Cologne, my first stop would be to go see my stalker 
I think in all seriousness though, it would be very hard to get everyone together at once - it seems likelier that it would work with 2 conventions one in Europe somewhere and one in North America - maybe we could find some way to conference teh two with webcams

Well that would seriously compromise everyone who's in the States but wants to see Europe for example. How about our Asian and Australian friends? Maybe a better option would be to make a whole convention in two consecutive weeks. (Ie, meeting in the US from 7th to 14t, then a meeting in Europe from 15th to 22th). In this way everyone can take their pick, or go to both. I'm sure that people who will be traveling from Australia may want to hop. :-)
Have in mind that a convention implies we'd be staying together somewhere, which in turn would reduce costs. We'd have to pick a month at least so I could start running checks but I'm optimistic. :-)
P.S. Munich is a very good place to go to. Lots of tourist sights. More expensive than Frankfurt for example but great things to see are worth a few extra bucks.

...mmh... Munich and Cologne are definately the two cities to go in Germany. Both towns do have the most friendly people in Germany; i would prefer Cologne as Munich is more conservative.
The top spots in Europe are definately London, Paris, Prague, Barcelona and Rome .....
....although i would prefer Paris to meet the "you-know-who-i-mean"-babe there, THE CITY OF LOVE.

Haven't visited Germany a lot yet (Trier was nice), even though my german is not too bad. Barcelona is amazing indeed. Rome is rather crowded, and Italians are a little loud imo. Paris is well, Paris
Bruges is a nice town too, like an open air museum, but it's extremely touristic. Ghent is like Barcelona in small... though it's a little colder in the winter

Acu, if u ever come to munich to visit me, I promise I'll give u my keys and we immediately take place in my BMW (YOU on the driver seat!) and rock onto the Autobahn. Then u can push down the "speed-o-meter" till the very end....and get the feeling of 150 mph..
