Create-A-Spell

I had this Idea a few days ago, and I want to know wether or not it is crazy.  A lot of people want more spells, so I figure, why not a "Create-A-Spell" feature in the Map Editor?  It would allow you to choose properties and shapes and things, and then put it into the game for you.  These could be exchanged online.

Here are some example screenshots with the four steps.

This is the first step, where you name your spell and define its type and level.

This step lets you choose colors and damage type and things.  I chose blue and light blue, Shockwave Shape, Air Element, and Electric damage. Basicly it electrocutes anyone in the area.  If I wanted, I could make it go in directions too.

This step for deciding mana cost and damage and things.

and lastly for bringing the spell into the world.

This is a BRILLIANT start to what could be one of THE best features of the game!

I know that this feature so far focuses mainly on Destructive spells (or, that how it seems to me from the shots), but for me, much more important would be more Light Magic, Dark Magic and Summoning spells.

Light and Dark Magic could be implemented fairly easily. What we want is option to:
- Affect any number of stats (select with slider which stat, and how much it's affected at each level - option for relative (%) or absolute (number) change should be available).
- Grant any creature ability (such as Etherealness, Life Drain, etc.).

Summoning Magic would be more tricky, because it deals with a lot of different effects. I'm a bit more at a loss with how that should be implemented. Also there's the question of the Adventure Magic spells, and in this context, I feel an Import A Spell feature could be very usefull - which lets you import a spell, possible with effects AND graphics, and then change certain properties of the spell (size, level, cost, strength, and internal properties like Town Portal: Targeted yes/no (for those who want the old Town Portal back). This would of course mean that Nival would have to be involved in this, because they have to unlock all the properties of the spells.

What's best of all is that I think there's a FUTURE in this. This feature will let us HAVE MORE with LESS WORK from Nival: For each time they create a new spell, it will let us develop it into 2 or 3 or 4 new spells, if we want that. That should actually be a very good argument to approach them with this. I think the spell-editor is only one step in what could be a proper game-editor: Modify cities by swapping creatures on different tears, changing stats and abilities etc. - it should all be very simple to program, it seems to me!!! - and also possibly changing Heroes by changing stat and skill progression - should also be fairly easy - and perhaps even add new skills and hero classes - would be much more tricky, but might be doable!

That's all just wishfull thinking, but it seems to me that this is a very good start.

Very nice idea.

But I think that it just won't be so proffesional.
Because: Magics will apear only in edited maps?
You can make a very strong magic and use it against other players...
And how is the magic going to look like in the magic book?
You won't draw it, right?

Think about those things.

Yes, that's the problem with all MODs. You can only use it in single player, unless nival make a way for the games to correspond with each others to check which modifications are active (unlikely).

Yes, you should upload a spellbook icon for each spell.

another great feature that sets Heroes 5 from the rest of them, along with racial skills. i really think Nival and Ubi should look at this and use it in the game, as it is awesome!

if you can make it real, i'll be very impressed!

I don't thing it actually exists yet - as I understand it, the shots are just concept images. We don't have access to the spell data, because they are hardcoded in the game .exe file, which means that Nival will have to adopt the idea and develop this, if it should ever see the light of day. At least, that's how it is to my (albeit limited) knowledge.

... And actually, "someone" suggested a Spell-editor a very long time ago - albeit I never made any graphical layouts for such a thing.

This is truly a great idea!

Although I think implementing it would be a little harder than alcibiades says, it still sounds double and will be certainly worth the time spent on it.

Wow!  People like my idea?  People like my idea? omg.

Alc: My thoughts were that the first screen would always be the same, but the others would change based on the magic type.  I'll start working on something for summoning magic.  Anyone have requests for a light or dark spell for me to do afterwords?

GenieLord: thanks, and you are right, symbolss matter.  Ifigure, there could be a few buildt iin that are sort of  generic, and a way to upload your own.

Daystar, don't sell your self too short. You may not be the one who posts most new topics on the board, but quality wise, you're better off than the average user, if you ask me.

As for the light and dark magic thing, I don't think the exact spell you model is as important as to include all the options that should be there. That would be:

Which properties to affect: Attack, Deffence, Speed, Initiative, Magic Resistance, Heal / Damage, Resurrect, add Abilities (No Retaliation, Regeneration, Double Attack, Incorporeality, etc.), ... (others?)

Numerical effects: Basic, advanced and expert effects, Cost, Duration, targeted or Mass effect, Skill to grant Mass effect ... (others?)

I could want you to, for example, to make a Prayer and a Sacrelege spell.

You forgot the good old mirth and fortune spells. Also there is the shield spell (melee resistance).
Dark spells are basically the opposite of everything proposed as light spells.
Now summoning is indeed harder to implement, but there are some possibilities:
***Summoning a creature - you will decide what will be its name, stats and abilities. The only problem is the animation, but if Nival will open the spell codes maybe they'll do the same to the creatures. (sounds like Heroes 5.5 ).
***Creating obstacles - you will decide the area of the obstacle, its durability and some special abilities (like the firewall damage or the upcoming wall of arms spell that damages attackers or maybe even exploding obstacles - mines). Of course that does not cover all aspects of summoning magic, but it's a start.

Anyway, good luck

nice post Geny, i think that this idea is so endless in possibilites that i really don't know were to start, lets try a few summoning spells

Level 2

Dummie- summons a new stuffed unit onto the battlefeild, is the race as the heroes faction and is level 1, amount summoned depends on mastery of Spellpower. (stuffed creature can not attack and is present till end of combat, if all other creatures are killed then the unit will explode))

Level 5

Call of Friendship

Summons 1 level 7 teir creature, 2 level 6 teir creature (and so on and so on). creature are present until the end of combat, if all other creatures are killed the hero will recieve 1 level 1 creature

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're asking for, Daystar, but these are my thoughts for spells I want to have in the game. I posted these a long time ago, but will give a link here, if you wan't to have inspiration. Some of these are actually in the new spells dormant in HoF, but others could be really nice.

Light Magic
Dark Magic
Destrictive Magic
Summoning Magic

By the way, I'm not sure there should be more runic spells. Runic Magic is a racial ability, and too many spells could make it too powerfull, I'm afraid.
