eclectics and fish with t

imho the question is if they are creating a renaissance style fantasy game or an eclectic fantasy game.

eclectics has mixed several styles with more or less success, i.e. just like there are ppl who like fish with tomato sauce. but as far as i understand, the other styles are more solid and have generally produced better results.

imho the homm4 graphics is quite a brutal display of eclectics, quite mindlessly (imho) trying to mix anything that looks nice, and (imho) the result is not looking as good as a whole as it might look otherways.

the graphics of the dragon golem, the thunderbird, etc, may look good or great individually, or may look great in some other game, but in the mix of creatures of a different style they have some trouble fitting in. same thing about aoe style or some other picturesque shiny buildings on a renaissance style lanscape.

even if some creatures do not look picturesque, they may fit the style in the mix of other creatures and on a certain style terrain, so that you get a new quality. imho at least the creatures in the same town should have the same style. e.g. the stronghold (i am not suggesting a creature lineup here, but trying to discuss graphics) would have a good unified style if the thunderbird looked more similar to the other barbarians and the centaur would not have such shiny high quality weapons and had a bit more barbarian-like hair style and fur color, also, the wolf might look perfect in the stronghold imho.

about the style being reasonably different in different towns, imho it may be even positive if the e.g. barbarian-like creatures have different style than the e.g. academy units, but they should have something in common nevertheless, i.e. if the barbarians looked like they do, but if the academy units had a hardcore cartoon style, i would not like it.

it's a pity homm4 is going for that kind of eclectics, imho.

Problem are those...

"3D graphics" which make units look like they haven't live at all and don't have that unique HoMM feeling.
HoMM has had always pretty crazy looking creatures with good sense. I didn't like Inferno graphics in HoMM3 because almost all looked at the same (Horns etc.). It was like they had run out of ideas and example Imps look very boring at least for me. However almost other towns had little bit more ideas.

Can't really say before I really get to see the game moving and playing it for some time. Maybe the graphics can still be good even if they look little bit "lifeless" for me.

Offtopic: a personal note

I just have to say that this is certainly one of the most interesting titles for a thread that I've seen in a while here on the Altar, and in the past couple of days, I've seen a whole heck of a lot of 'em.

Thanks for showing me something new.
