I was just wondering. I hope I don't look too dumb for this.

A shame Lith isn't online... He knows everything about him...

What I know is he invented (or made popular) fantasy creatures through his books. Like the elves, dwarves, hobbits (halflings), orcs and dragons. His most famous story is called "Lord of the Rings", and it's coming as a movie december this year (the first part). I only read the story about the hobbit, so I don't know so much about him.

Tolkien: an author whose works are hobbit-forming?

He is either:
The Father of Modern Epic Fantasy, or Incredibly Boring, depending on who you ask.

I read The Hobbit and LOTR back in the early 70's, and refused to become fanatical either way.

propably you are talking about how me and incubus see Tolkien

J.R.R. is responsible for making Elves (Eldar) such a great race, for the remake of Dwarves and Orcs (Yrc) and the creator of Halflings (Hobbits)

he created 16 different languages and needed a background for them... that was the reason for creating Middle Earth

[quoted from www.tolkien-ent.com]

Quote:
The most famous of these works are The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, a trilogy which includes The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. These stories are set in the fantasy realm of Middle-Earth, which resembles Europe as it might have existed in an imaginary period of antiquity. Middle-Earth was richly populated by Tolkien with wonderfully original characterizations of humans, wizards, elves, dwarves, dragons, goblins and many other fanciful characters, including those such as hobbits, orcs, balrogs, woses and ents which grew out of mythological elements filtered through Tolkien's creative imagination

the Silmarillion

I'm one of the Tolkien fanatics.

I had a science teacher who introduced me to The Hobbit when I was in 7th grade and I read the entire book in one day.

I was, and still am, very attracted to Tolkien's fantasy world.

One book I hardly ever see mentioned when people speak of him is The Silmarillion.  This book is a must-read for any Tolkien fan.  It's the story of the world before there was a world.  It also explains the origins of the different races as well as sets the stage for LOR.

If you enjoy Tolkien's work, and haven't read The Silmarillion, you owe it to yourself to do so.

true.. true...

I've read all tolkien's books concerning Middle Earth about five times each... I started with the trilogy, two days for the first book, two more days for the next two...the next day i read Hobbit then the Silmarilion came the day after, Unfinished Tales, a day for all the rest and then...I searched the web for Tolkien... you see, even though I was aware of the "Lord of the Rings"'s existence, I only read the books last year.. now I just can't wait for the movies... I do hope they have read ALL the books, because tolkien was very strict about the histroy of Middle Earth and the Children of Iluvatar (Eldar and Atanatari- Elves and Humans alike) ...Dwarves were not originally part of The Big Plan and that's why their diplomatic relationship with eldar was not perfect (something misunderstood for hatred in most fantasy worlds...) Hobbits on the other hand where a Human race that (d)evolved into Halflings...

whoever wants to lear nmore... go buy them books...it's worth the effort..

Indeed, he has passed on.

And his works still flourish.  His name is, and always will be, well known.  His stories are timeless and world renowned.

How many of us will be remembered as well after we're gone?

I wonder...........

Regard your good name as the richest jewel you can possibly be possessed of - for credit is like fire; when once you have kindled it you may easily preserve it, but if you once extinguish it, you will find it an arduous task to rekindle it again. The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear.

Not really. All of their albums have at least one tolkien based song or tolkien reference on them, but only Nightfall in Middle Earth is totally tolkien based.

In fact, it's not just Tolkien based, but they have dialogue and sound effects between the songs, and the songs all go together to tell a part of the story.

And I'm off topic.

Well, based on your sig, you might like them...  if that's a ManOwaR thing you're making reference to.

Blind Guardian is somewhat a mix between metal, classical, and progressive rock.  I guess you could say they're similar to Queen, but heavier, but that's not all of it. Their older stuff is pretty much like any german powermetal (Helloween, manowar, gamma ray - if you know any of them) while their newer stuff has gotten much more complex and bizzare, but is *very* good.  The complexity makes it a bit harder to get into though.

www.blind-guardian.com is their official website.  Most of the content on there is about their upcoming album (which they've been working on for several years now)

Oh, Yeah!!!!!!!

My sig is indeed a direct reference to that group, Rogue

Battle Hymn is one of my all time favorite tunes.  That song gets me pumped up every time I listen to it!!!!

I'm also familiar with some of the bands you mentioned.

I'll check the url you gave me, and most likely buy the cd and give it a spin

Thanks for the tip, it's appreciated!!

...father of fantasy? Hardly so...father of "modern perhaps"...his most important contribution to the fantasy world though, has got to be that it was he who transformed elfs into elves...

...and make no mistake, there is only One God...
