(WIP means Work In Progress)

I'm so used to these texture replacers in Morrowind, and when I saw how blurry many of the textures are in Heroes 5, I decided to make a texture replacer mod.

Texture Replacers Finished So Far:
(See my posts below for screenshots)
Heroes 5 Dirt and Swamp Water Texture Replacer
Heroes 5 Grass and Dirt Field Texture Replacer

I'm starting with the dirt and swamp water textures.  Some are completely new, and others are the game textures tweaked and sharpened by me.  All of the textures are saved in the way Nival did, and have the same file size, so other than extra room taken in your data files, there should be no effect on game performance.

Here's some pics of the dirt replacer textures ingame:

And here's the grassy swamp water texture imgame.  It looks cool, but it can be a bit unsettling seeing the grass swaying and swirling in the water, so I will have a version without the swamp water texture as well.

but for the sake of convenience... it would be nice if you posted screens of the original textures next to the new ones ...we are visual animals after all ...well, some of us

I will be.  I just playtested these last night, and was very happy to see them working well.  So couldn't wait to do WIP threads for them.  I need to pick specific spots, save games there, and then take pics before and after.

I'm still working on textures, but decided to go ahead and release the dirt and swamp water textures.  They are currently not in a .pak, but work fine loose. Here's the files, along with a readme that has installation info and full texture credits:

Good Work redwoodsprite

More realistic I hate the stupid comics graphics in H5,... very nice!

But the cratures, towns,  buildings - still like comics. I'm working for more realistic cratures:

Not for all towns but Inferno, necro, haven, dungeon... we need more realistic here

Very true.  And that manticore is pretty bizarre.  I keep getting the urge to do a redo of the green and emerald dragons.  They're so blurry.
Though it would likely be a month-long project for me.  And I want to do the landscape and some other things first.
After I do all the land, I want to do rocks and such, and then some of the things like the leprechaun, faerie ring, wagons and assorted items,
and also many of the adventure map buildings.

Hee. Once I finish all of this, I want to do a different version that recreates the look of Heroes 1.
One of the nice thing about Heroes 5 is how easy it is to change it's looks by simply adding or removing a pak file.
So all kinds of mods are possible, and are easy to install or uninstall.

RWS: Nice job on the landscapes!  is it possible to do new textures?  I'm thinking like a sort of marble road, or the nifty things from Heroes III from each of the four elemements?

The game seems very friendly about accepting replacer textures, as long as they are named the same.  Completely new textures used on maps are a problem I think, because of the battle arena part.  I've read that the game crashed when map makers used the snow texture that was included in one of the patches because there was no battle area set up for snow yet.

However, it may be possible to get the game to accept new textures if they are placed in one of the main terrain folders, like grass, dirt, etc.  There may be a need for some text adjusting in the game files though.

I'd be happy to help anyone who needs textures for their maps.  Though I can't help with getting additional textures to work, at least not yet.  So much to learn still about modding this game...

How about setting it up so that if you are on a, say, Limpid Pools terrain, during battle it would... use the grass set up (or sth) and there could be some programing wherein the grass is replaced by wet for the duration of combat, and then reset afterwords?

Also, perhaps programing so that fire damage is less, but water/ice damage is worse?

Daystar - It might be possible, though that's way beyond my abilities, at least for 6 months I'm sure.

I've finished playtesting all the grass textures, and am satisfied with the way they look, so I'll be packing them up on Monday I think.  (We're going to an anime convention this weekend, so the upload will have to wait a few days.)
