ITCT: Cavern (Troglodytes)

Introduction
“Geon leads us.”

Aka: The Troglodytes, The Underworld
Associated colors: black and dark blue
Worship: Geon, the Allmighty.
Core philosophy: “Obey or die.”
Country / kingdom: The Underworld
Capital city: Temple of Geon
Hero: Overlord
Key symbols: The Shadow Glyph, Geon's Eye

Description
The whole underground empire of the Troglodytes relies on one thing - Geon. Who, what and where did Geon came from is a mistery - his true form, race and power are unknown. He led the troglodites for hundreds of years and united the Overlords.  Geon teached the troglodytes and helped them subdue various monsters. He gave the Shadowpriests the power of mind control and they soon formed Geon's Hand.
The Tunnelers and the Brutes serve the Overlords. Shadowpriests are the only ones who can enter the Temple of Geon and they are His voice and will. Creatures such as the Venom Spawns, Beholders and the Basilisks are contolled by them and serve only Geon's Hand. Most Overlords are Shadowpriests. 13 Shadowpriests form Geon's Hand, and control the deeds of the other Shadowpriests and Shadowcasters.

Architecture
The architecture of the troglodytes is close to that of the mayan temples. The buildings look anchent and remind of ruins. Their settlements are deep underground and have a deserted, messy, evil sort of look. The stones are dark and covered in moss... Often as part of  the structure are bones, skins and skulls of giant underground animals.
The Main building in the town is the temple... Its a huge, pyramidal structure deep beneath the surface. Around it are scattered the dwellings of the troglodytes and their creatures.

Brief history

??? - 597 YSD
Deep beneath the kingdom of the sylfans, dwarfs and humans, in caves and tunnels as old as the world of Ashan exist the primitive savage tribes of the troglodytes. Scattered in small groups, these creatures used simple weapons such as daggers and short spears made of bones and stone. They had no knowledge of fire or art.

597 YSD: The Awakening
An unknown creature called Geon starts teaching a small tribe of troglodytes. Allthough they are a blind race, they live in a world of darkness and have exeptional sence of smell, sound and have minor telepatic abilities who compensate for their lack of sight. Geon teaches them how to make fire and craft metal tools and weapons.

650 YSD: The Tribe Wars
With Geon's blessing, the tribe concours the nearby tribes. The Tribe Wars begin.

713 YSD: Uniting the Tribes
After allmost every troglodyte tribe is either defeated or part of the Geon's followers, the tribe wars end. The caverns are united and Geon begins teaching magic to those who have enough talent and wisdom for it.

726 YSD: The Hand of Geon
For senturies the Venom Spawns and Basilisks attack the troglodytes. In order to oppose this, Jaegar, veteran of the Tribe Wars and the most promising student of Geon's scholars forms an alliance with a dozen of gifted troglodyte mages. These thirteen call themselves Geon's Hand. Not long after the first monsters - the simple-minded Venom Spawns - are subdued by the spells of the Hand.

728 YSD
Jaegar creates the first magical eyes... The Sentries, as Jaegar calls them are small and hover in the air. They can be controled by any of the mages and are used for seeing the world around them. These creations of magic would lead to the making of the Evil Eyes and the Beholders. Meanwhile the Horror Basilisks have also been subdied and controled by Geon's Hand.

770 YSD: Seeds of doubt
Geon's Hand is too powerfull... They become arogant and treat the lesser troglodytes as slaves and savages.  Some troglodytes secretly form a plot to destroy the Hand and Geon itself.

789 YSD: Rize of the Heretics
Troglodytes who are against Geon's Rule try to destroy the Shadowpriests. Desperate,  Jaegar begs Geon to help him. Geon tells him to  sacrifice his first-born son. Jaegar agrees. As a result a Faceless One aids Geon's Hand and destroys the Heretics.

796-805 YSD: The Temple
Jaegar orders for the building of a massive temple in the central cavern. The task takes 9 years and cost hundreds of lives. After the Temple of Geon is build all access to Geon is forbitten and only Geon's Hand is allowed in the Temple.

805-990 YSD: The Age of Blood
For the next 200 years the Cavern empire stands on the edge of chaos. The dark rituals of Geon's Hand are bloody and violent and all who oppose their reigh end either as a sacrifice for Geon or as basilisk food. The Beholders and Evil Eyes spy on the common troglodytes and the Cavern Empire has no enemies but those within it.

991 YSD: First touch with the outside world
A small group of Dark Elves accidently reaches the caverns... Jaegar, grandson of the first Shadowcaster is an Overlord and leader of Geon's Hand. He decides the only way to unite the Cavern again is a common enemy and gets ready for war.

like i said on the orginal, looks good.

a largely unchanging history, which prompts questions like where did they come from, etc.

like the religious twist on it, please put more units, like a better trog warrior called a templar, or a trog shooter called a exemplar, making it seem more religiously fanatic, if you are going to have a messiah as a hero.

the trogs rememder me somewhat of the skaven from warhammer. if you want to be inspired by them, i'm sure games workshop are far too busy berating KD to care.

you've mentioned wyverns...where are they?

Just two small pips from me. The main race is still too poorly represented in the creature line-up. And the Cyclops seems to lack specials to make it fun to play.

And somehow I feel the Manticore would have been a natural addition to the line-up instead of the Bat.

I like the bat {I liked FoG's bat in the Island too}

I agree, the history and descriptions need to be fleshed out to make this into a real faction.

Once the faction has a real feel to it - the creatures will evolve to become more interesting - you will have a direction to give them powers etc.

This is about creating a new world right - we have to feel like we are a part of it

Regarding "the wyvern/manticore"... I decided the Horror Bat would work better. Having two high level reptiles makes the Cavern a little too close to the Dungeon. A giant bat seems more logical for an underground unit and besides, wyverns are probably going to be in the settlement anyway. I allways thought manticores are a desert/mountain kind of animal.

Regarding the "more troglodytes in the line-up". The academy has only 1 racial creature(the mage) in his line-up. The cavern has 3(tunneler, scholar basilisk rider). I think its enough considering they are masters of mind control. It seams rather logical that they'd use simple-minded, yet powerfull creatures in their army.

Regarding "the poor history/description". As you see I'm working on it.

At the moment im working on the heroes and bios... I'd update it soon enough.

About the racial skill i am thinking about a few possible things:

- Turncoat. Before every battle there's a chance that a group of enemy creatures would join the Messiah's army. The chanse of that depends on hero level, the number and level of the enemy creatures. Units with "Imunity to Mind Control" cannot be turned.

- Pillage. After every victory the Messiah gains gold equal to a sertain percent of the enemy troop's value.

- Mining. The cavern gains more resourses per day.

- Sacrifice. During battle you can destroy a group of your creatures in order to gain more mana or moral.

I like bixie's idea too. I can't choose really.

firstly, academy is an execption, and they have stated that they are wizards creations and mages. they are all underlings of the wizards, so in a sense, they are are racial central. (if your following this, good!)

secondly, regarding a racial skill, think about trogoldytes you've created and think about what they most focus around, what central theme are they, and use that. its worked with all the other towns, and it should work here.

thirdly, a sub skill for leadership that doesn't fit into my factions, but if you are using the "turn coat" racial, it should fit perfectally.

"cowards in our midst"
the trogs create a sense of fear amongst enemy troops, allowing their moral to go no higher than 1.

fourthly, good luck!

I think you can add a little more on history but there is plenty of time.

7th lv creatures should be feared by anyone who plays a game vs them.
The CYclops dont scare me .
Maybe a better description on why they are feared?

Your doing a good job with the ideas.
Keep it up & remember there is time to work & edit.

Interesting, I was thinking about the cyclops today and came up with a more fitting creature. A Cyclops doesn't seem like a 7 lv creature. It doesn't look like the cyclops fits in the caverns either. I have something much more powerfull... something evil - and its perfect.
Patience, my friends, patience. You'd know what it is. All I can say is: It's not a dragon!

Seriously though you are making the right decision.
The history can also effect the way the creatures portray it.
You have to make it somewhat believable.
Cyclops is not the worst choice.
My problem are them being lv 7 creatures.
They stunk in heroes 2 being the top dog compared to the other creatures in that game
