Searching in HC

The search option in HC pointless. You can't really use it.

Problems with it:
1. If you look for a thread, you can't seach only in threads' names, it always comes with all the posts.
2. You don't have a list of threads that the results are in them, like a regular search, or maximum of 2-3 sentences under the thread's name, there are 2000 characters, and that's the minimum! . And it includes pictures! There are searches that there are posts with more then 10 large pictures!
3. You can't use Word+Word option! If you need to find a post that have two word in it, and they are not a phrase, you will get every post that has just one of the words also, not just posts that there are all the words you seached. In a regular seach tool, that has always Word+Word automaticly, they expect you to seach every word in a different search, to find all the posts that have only one of these words.
4. You can't pick to seach only in one forum, it always seaches in all the forums.

With all that, I find anything I look for in HC.
And I saw atleast 10 people that complain about HC's seach option.
Please, do something with it! Change it or atleast improve it.

Maybe u give us an example?
I tried to do different kind of searches, and it always worked well. You know u can use words like "NO", "OR" and such in your search?

I did. But u can't have it all. If u know a thread title, and u put in the whole title in the search box, u will get this thread as result though...

Let's see:
If you seach this thread. You write Seaching in HC.
It will find all the posts that include the words Seaching, or in or HC.
It will be extremely difficult to find this thread in the result.

Umm Geneilord, there is an option:

Sort by Posts
Sort by Threads

Maybe if you typed in:

Searching in HC, and chose "Sort by Threads" then perhaps you might find this thread easier.

It is worth a try, infact I might try it out now and see if it works

EDIT:

I tested it out, and if you chose "Newest First" option, then it will find the Newest Thread that you searched for, for me I typed in "Searching in HC" and it came up with your thread first.

But it also came up with many other posts, with letter's highlighted, which could cause a problem, well infact it came up with 57 results, and I did "quality posts first" option as OFF.

Now, if you do know what thread you are looking for, and you know who made it, then there are 2 options avaliable to you:

*Find the person, and look in their profile, and go to "ThreadS" and search through the threads that they have made.

*Go to Search, type in the thread name, along with the username who made it, and do the search, and do it with Sort by Threads.

Hope that helps you a little bit

Ok, I did your research.
I put this into the search box:
"Searching in HC" (don't forget the " " !!)
I've chosen "sorted by threads".

The result was:
Quote:
Search: "Searching in HC" returned 2 results (showing page 1 of 1). This query was searched 1 times.
Conditions:  posts first. Sorting by threads, newest first.

The result is your opening post of that thread and Williams answer above.

Well it looks like I am correct then, although I hardly use the Search Page, I have however figured some things with it, like:

*If you search for a particular member, say for example I search for myself and do  quality posts first, I then click enter, and it shows every one of my post's, my quallity posts first.

If you then go the the very last page, and look at the very last post's, they, in theory, should be the posts that I was penalized with.

If you go and search my name now, and do quality posts first, and go to the very last page, you should be able to see 3 posts of mine that I was penalized for, the other's were deleted as the thread's were sent to the VW, and one of my post's that I was penalized for I deleted.

But that was something that I figured out one day as I was searching through a particular member's profile and went to the last page and I saw the penalties that they had recieved (I think the member may have been myself or Sir_Stiven, cannot remember).

But yeh, and Genielord, it is pretty easy to use the Search here at HC, just do what I  told you to do, and Angelito made a good point about when you do the thread search use the " " character's, and it should be fine.

Anyway glad to help I suppose.

Dont get cocky .
It still dont help though.
Searching for threads just narrows the stuff that pops up in your search engine.
Oh well so much for the search engine lol.

One word: RTFM

Quote:
Use NOT to exclude words: knight NOT warlock
Use OR to seach for either word: dragon OR phoenix
Use quotes to search for exact phrase: "heroes 3 online"
Use spaces to search for all words in one post: tactics haste
Short words will also find longer words: necro finds necromancer
Use quotes and spaces to find whole words only: " bob "

Understanding these search principles makes it possible to find almost anything. It's not perfect and not as intelligent as google, but quite capable with the right input.

I guess what follows falls under the scope of this thread.

When I use the function "filter threads" and select "informative" in the library nothing shows up, "no posts made in the last 99999 days" or something like that is shown. This happens in both IE and Firefox.
But clearly the library contains threads that are rated "informative".

This is the only case I've tried; I rarely use the filter function.

Am I missing something?

Limit a search to a forum

I got directed here after I posted the question below in another forum.

Is there a way to use the HC search engine to limit the search to a particular forum, or better yet to a short list of favorite forums?

For example, I have recently started HOMM5 and really only care about things relating to that game, not HOMM4 etc.

I've tried putting the forum title in the search, but that gives nothing.

Of course, but that does not answer the question.

The question was "How do I limit a search to only the forums that relate to HOMM5?".  When I do a search now, I get all sorts of unrelated threads from other forums.

Perhaps by typing in the specific thing you want to look for in the Search, but type it like this "heroes 5 threads example" and be sure to include the " "

Maybe that might help?

Probably not, I mean, if you're posting in the Homm5 forum, there's not a real need to add those words...
For instance, the searh "heroes 5 inferno" only got 1 result. Not really effictive. I've experimented a bit with the search function, and although it helps to find a specific thread, I'd rather browse the subforum if I want to find help with somthing...The NOT and OR functions aren't really helpful, as you might leave out important posts using them...But apart from that, it still has many uses.

As mentined above, it's no Google, but it suffices.

Ahh well okay then.

You could always go and look at the Table of Contents that TDL made (I think TDL made it).

You should be able to find any type of thread in there, except I think it might be a little bit outdated.

If HC Search is no Google, can't you search just HC, using Google???

That's pretty much what I do usually. That's an excellent solution.
Just add to everything you look for "heroescommunity", and it's just like HC search with Google functions.

For example, if you want to look for "H2 Campaign", go to google and type
-"H2 Campaign" heroescommunity-
All the results will come only from HC.

Adding "site:heroescommunity.com" or something similar should work too, that's what I usually do, although I always feel that we can't guarantee that Google has cached every single HC thread...
