Sub-Cultures

I find that being in a sub-culture gives you people to be with, a place to feel safe and happy.

I am a goth, but there are a lot more sub-cultures we see in everyday life, such as emos, punks, gangsters and the such. Somehow we are classed together, Goths don't actually cut themselves, praise satan (Those are satanists) and perform bizzare rituals with pentagrams. All of this prejudice and emnity between us and society is causing much discomfort for me and my friends, all because of the lies and misunderstandings.

Goths wear black, are individualists, are usually atheist (Non religious) and are quite bold about their sexuality (Gays, Bisexuals) and listen to a lot of metal.

That sums our group up quite well, and my thoughts are that most people hear the word "Goth" and think depressed teenagers wearing makeup, whereas this is not the case. It is a sub-culture, not a cult.

Yanzhangcan,

I think this is a good thread. I wonder what the significance of subcultures is to a main society. I wonder if the different subcultures are part of how a main society is formed.

Thankyou for your opinions, I am curious to see the people and their positions in society as it is always good to find people like yourself.

Politics play a large part in subculture (Eg Punks, and the rebelling against society) but most subcultures are misinterpreted. I would like anyone who has the truth about their sub-cultures to post here, and tell us what they are about.

All jake did was.
"Oh Great thread"
h great pic"

On the other note as what I have seen on here.
Not many like Goths.
You should see how Ruby got treated when she posted her pics lol.

It is true, many misunderstand the kind a person someone wants to become.
There are many good people regardless of who they are.

ironic...

you talk about subcultures being missinterpreted ...yet in your opening post you perpetuate a stereotype:
Quote:
Goths wear black, are individualists, are usually atheist (Non religious) and are quite bold about their sexuality (Gays, Bisexuals) and listen to a lot of metal.

if stereotypes were true, i'd be part of at least sixteen subcultures now... instead i am just ...me

some subcultures, stay in the background and are seen as a phase someone goes through ...others, shape generations ...and a few, manage to lead humanity, for better or worse

and acu, cool it on the jake comments, if you two have something to work out, do it in pm

Lith, I am merely correcting those stereotypes. Generally while within subcultures you conform towards the dress code etc (Some gangsters wear bandanas) and the other things that are done.

What you are trying to say is the most stereotypes are misleading, and this is true. Everyone takes the worst case scenario (If you are blonde, you are stupid, if you are black, you are a thief) and yet hardly any of this is true. I am merely stating my opinion on what a goth is, as all the said stereotypes are negative and misleading.

I just want people to know more about sub-cultures, and stop listening to the junk we hear through media, as it is false and puts us at risk (I was attacked for wearing cuffs)

I actually don't agree with you one bit on your definition of goth, nor the new world's definition. (Aka, Mtv's definition).

Goth has nothing to do with clothing, religion, a mindset, or their sexuality. That is a silly lable that society has formed so that they can easily classify each other in groups depending on what they listen to, what they do, what they believe in, but most of all, what they wear. This is all just with the coming of the age. I can't say that I'm very much older than you probably are, but those lables like "punk," "emo," and "goth," are so materialistic it's not even funny. I guess I can't say there's anything really wrong and sinful about calling yourself goth, but first of all, how about knowing what true goth is, and I can tell you, it's not a sub-culture or a cult. It's part of history.

The word Gothic has been twisted. Goth has actually originated from the early mediveal times, from the German's and the French's structure of architecture from the 12th to the 16th century. In the 1700s, Gothic literature was being produced in England, a form of "dark" poetry and stories. I recently studied Edgar Allan Poe and Horace Walpole, two great examples of a true gothic writers. As you probably know, gothic literature had much to do with the supernatural, the dark side of things, and as it was written during the age of romanticism, it steered away from God, which was new for the people of that time. Obviously, the original, the the beautiful Gothic had somewhat to do with what it's been twisted into, but today, anyone wearing black lipstick and listens to Skinny Puppy can be considered Goth. I'll have to roll my eyes at that.

And if you still don't consider that original and true goth, then check out another good use of true gothic in today's world-

I didn't mean for it to turn into a "I know everything" lecture, which is definately not the case here. I'm not saying that you're wrong by labeling yourself as Goth because in modern age, what you described is now "goth," as silly as it seems to me.

What I really want to resolve is that gothic, punk, prep, emo...they're all just silly lables, or "sub-cultures" as you call them. These sub-cultures are formed for our own comfort and to help us feel safe in our little pacts formed only to keep ourselves from other people. The people I know personally that call themselves things of the sort end up living in their own little groups and building their nests their, but it's not healthy. Keeping yourself open to others and not excluding in the terms of the way people look, the things they listen to, the stuff they do for fun, etc., is what makes the world a better place, a safer place, and a friendlier place. I know I sound really fruity and probably like a mother, but it's true. From my experience and the experience of my peers, I feel that setting yourself aside at an early age won't help you in future years. Open up that sub-culture into a wider culture and don't worry about lables, and worry more about making your atmosphere a better environment for other people.

Oh and btw, Satanism, satan, and pentagrams only link together in the MTV world...not necessarily in the real one

Hahah, you make a good point, I'm sure everyone has their own unique definition of their subcultures. I suppose it's all perception, and how people label us. Many people argue the point "Manson is the creator of goth" and "Anton LaVey was the sole reason people are goth" But these people are not much more than posers, You can wear as much foundation, hide your eyes behind walls of eyeliner, but the truth remains; Your beliefs are your greatest asset. You are not goth for listening to "Slipknot" "Cradle of filth" "Christian death" or any other "Goth" bands.

You are a goth for whats inside, your opinion on life. May I ask you what makes a goth? I'm sure you could type a very adequate answer, but everyone will have a different answer.

People in the goth scene all have different musical tastes, follow different religions, have different occupations, hobbies, and fashion sense. Most goths are actually free thinkers, but this kind of free thinking and rejection of religion etc earns only rejection in todays society.

Modern goth (ignoring where the name itself originally comes from) started in the early 80's as part of the punk subculture, and has evolved and given off mutant offspring (Emos, the "Wrist slitting" stereotype) and other facets of the true "Goth".

I'm sure you can relate to this, and understand it. I also ammend you on making your own choices in life, and keep wearing that eyeliner!

I never really fit into any subculture  I guess I used to just be a drifter  If there was one in highschool that I would have been associated with I guess it was an 'alternate'.

How would you differentiate between an emo and a goth btw.  Emos are fairly knew on the scene here and they seem to be a psuedo replacement for goths...
Maybe a blend of 'alternate' and goth

Now I guess I would be a daghippyalternatespammer.  Sometimes the kids at school call me an emo - but only in some outfits

Subcultures are definately a means of identity formation - as long as people don't change too much just to fit in, I guess they have a place huh.
