sub cultures are really weird, but i like them. they add a diveristy to society, saying "look, you do what the hell you want. creed, religion, sex, it ain't stoping you." it adds a deeper complex in society.

there is a strange sub culture developing round my area. its basically people who are obsessed with the moon and mystic stuff during the day, and go to metal gigs at night, with often involves alot of fighting and biteing, snarling and scratching. we are "characterised" in a way by long, scraggy hair, sharp teeth (usually), long nails and generally looking kinda savage! we also draw long swirling tattoos (in pen) on our hands, sometimes face, etc. if we get into a fight, we don't use weapons (we also sometimes do ritual fights in the woods, but thats another story) we scratch, bite, claw and kick, until there is blood on the ground. we do alot of animalistic things (Bar howling at the moon and eating each other). it's barbaric, but its fun!

at my school, there is loads of sub groups of chavs, emos, goths, hippies, and these feral dudes (i'm one).

How would you differentiate between an emo and a goth btw.

Emo: "the world sucks, I want to die"
Goth: "the world sucks, I want you to die"

Great answer.

In my experience emos sport fagboy haircuts and male goths grow out their hair.

Neither one can claim exclusive property rights to the color black.

but I'm sure there are people here who don't like goths.

*raises hand*

Um, that would be me.

I've had plenty of experience with subcultures such as goths and punks and industrialists and new wavers and housers and *looks at Aculias* Menudo lovers.

Each one has their own set of strict rules.  You have strict dress codes, ways of thinking, and various levels of acceptance of unemployment.

So please spare me this bs about being individuals.  If someone dresses the part but doesn't act the part or listen to the appropriate music or have the appropriate dysfunctional relationship with their parents or hasn't fried their brains on the appropriate levels of illegal drugs they get talked about and ostracized as posers.

Subcultures create cliques.  The people who are drawn to them tend to have been rejected by the stronger and more prominent cliques.  They come together by virtue of their anti-cliqueishness and end up doing the same thing to other people.  They find camrarderie among each other while sneering and deriding others who do the same thing.  Don't get me wrong.  I understand the primal urge to want to belong to something and to find an identity.  But it is an urge that is inherent in all of us, not just the people who scorn us and we scorn in return.

As far as all the stupid behavior associated with goths and emos, nah, they didn't invent them; much as they'd like to believe they're somehow original.  More often than not they just think it's cool to talk about these stupid behaviors and to get a rise out of people who aren't in the know about their culture.

In my experience the worst behaviors these groups have exhibited is a mass laziness due to getting high and trying to get high all the damn time.  This is reflected in poor academic performance and an inability to hold down a job.

*Coughs pointedly* Subcultures, people!

It's ok to hate people in groups, but as long as there is diversity, there will be sub-cultures.

The unemployment thing is stupid. Many sub-cultists go on to be surgeons, doctors, Lawyers (Lmfao) and other great careers. Though right you may be about some, Gootch, you will find there is a place for everyone, not particularly in a group.

Thankyou for your views, etc. Just keep on topic when possible

I think that gootch has given the most correct answer.I'm 100%with him.
I don't have anything with subcultures but i think all these are just without meaning.I 've passed this phase.I was trying to be goth and after punk. But i was just 15 yo.All are psuchological.I wanted just to be special ,to notice me.All eyes on me,u know.
And also i believe that for the most all starts from music. Before few years i used to be a crazy fan of "HIM" and i started to change my clothing.
Hopefully i realized that all these are meaningless and there is no need to change my habbits just in order to be able to say that i am a goth or whatever.Allthough i like goth gyes.
Life is simple. Why we complicate it?

Hmm, I'd must say while the defition of "goth" is wrong, it is just a name given to that particular subculture.

I don't really dislike anyone, but I tend to stay away from the Punk, Emo, Goth, and Nerd cliques. Most of the people I hang out with are other Football players, Baseball players, cheerleaders, softball/volleyball players, or the Tailgaters,. mostly anyone that plays some sort of sport. Some people classify us as Jocks/Preps. Ok, I like to wear Abercrombie, American Eagle, and Hollister. But I don't listen to none of that Fallout Boy/Panic! At the Disco crap either.

I don't mind the black culture (for lack of a better term) either, seeing as how alot of the football players are black, and they are fun to play cards with when you have nothing else to do (despite the fact that most of them cheat, and no i didn't mean that in a racially offensive way, its just true.)

I'd say there are 3 major groups at my school.

Blacks/Hiphop, Jocks/Preps, Goth/Emo/Punk (Most of them hang out in similar places, even if they don't do the same things)

No one really messes with each other or anything like that, and there isn't any hate going on. The blacks/jocks hang out during school and stuff but rarely would u see them hanging out after. We each have our own parties and stuff. And then you have the people who just hang out with a few of their own friends and occassionally talk to other people.

Many people fear what they dont know, and this show how much the mankind are weak and pretensious.
That subcultures are representations of the personality of the people, showing what they think, fear and hope.
I am not from no one of these subcultures, but i do what everybody should do: I respect.

can anyone say "Wanabe lycanthropes?"

I'm a geek, and proud of it.  The Geeks I know are basically like normal people who hang out, only instead of coke we have green tea or cocoa, instead of street corners we hang out in coffee shops, and instead of egging and fighting we reprogram computers and do CGI.

We are not to be confused with Nerds, who are scary people that sit in dark rooms and come up with "Evidence" about why Harry and Hermione will get together.

In my school, there are basically the following "Subcultures:"

Cheerleaders/Preps, Jocks, Dorks/thugs, Nerds, Geeks, "Ghettos" and People.

The Cheerleaders at my school?  actually worse than goths.  They actually pass as eachother in order to skip classes by administering enough makeup.

Jocks spend so much time flexing their muscles that they have to put their arms down afterwards and do nothing with them for 50 minutes.  this usually happens during class periods.

Dorks are just stupid people who go around hitting people.

Nerds: See above.

Geeks: The Geek is a very rare species at my school, although I belive this is because they are good at disguising themselves.  One of my friends is a Geek in a Jock's face, and my not-girlfriend is a hybrid between a geek and a person disguised as a prep.

Ghettos are basically dorks with pants that start at their knees.

People are the deep, sentimental types.  I can be this type when necessary.  a lot of people at my school also disquise themselves as something else.

I wish there was a thread classification of "fascinating". That's what I'd label this thread as. It is such a new concept for me. I am finding it absolutely fascinating. I think I have some things in common with the title of "emo". I found this video that disturbingly made sense to me. The more I listened, the more I found myself in shock from actually feeling almost complete understanding with what's being said. I think I'm definitely not "Goth" but almost 90% "emo". I have never cut myself but I have attempted suicide and other mild forms of self-punishment when I was very young such as walking bare-foot on sharp rocks to get my mind off the confusion I was feeling about life in general. I knew the short-term pain would give me a moment's relief and focus to keep from going insane. After reading more about these two subcultures I am really starting to like "emos" but the whole self-torture thing such as cutting is very disturbing.

Check out this video of an actual "emo" girl:

Now, I feel that it's better to lable people as rebels than to lable them as punk, because nowadays, Green day and My Chemical Romance is considered punk. Punk died the day that Joey Ramone left this earth, and now that I think about it, probably earlier than that. What really goes on in the terms of punk is the music, the wonderful music, and people like Avril Lavigne makes the still-alive punk rockers want to hurl up their livers. The so called "punk" Music of today...purely and simply sucks big time. The concept of anarchy and rebellion have gone from "I'm not afraid of life" to "I wear a tie and have 18 pairs of converse so I must be a punk rocker."

Honestly, I have to disagree. Punk is not dead, even though you may have that feeling. Personally I don't give a damn about the so called Punk groups, broadcasted on the mainstream medias. Those are just worthless, commercial bands with no message and no quality. The real punk thankfully still lives. Maybe you don't have that feeling, since the media broadcast something else and portray you an image a la My Chemical Romance.

If you want to experience that punk still exists you should check out the underground scene. Even here at home there is a decent scene of Ska, Punk, Oi and Hardcore which are all closely connected. I guess that you would be surprised the scene that the US possesses. Take Anti-Flag for example or the Templars... And I'm not even talking about Europe, which exceeds the Americans...
