Maybe AOH, CH, and the other HOMM communities could request Ubisoft to give some sort of update on status of next patch of if they decide to make no more patch after all? It has been very long time since any official communication of Ubisoft with HOMM community unless I missed post somewheres.

I have been playing the original HOMM5 with patch 1.6 for quite some time.  Now that I have finally finished every map I can find to download, I am starting to use the Hammers of Fate addition.  I installed it and applied the 2.1 patch -- latest I could find.

I begin playing the first campaign, and immediately notice several things that are retro.  The option to cause a hero to sleep has vanished.  I no longer see the "danger status" when attacking a stack.  There may well be other things that have disappeared but that I have not yet noticed.

Is there any way to get those things back that came with patch 1.6 on the original game?

Those things like wait button have never appeared on HoF. Simply becouse 2.1 is much older than 1.6 and 3.0 is.

I don't remember. With the original game there used to be some new with patches but unsure with HoF, better look for custom ones.

To verify your HoMM language version go to Start->Run and type regedit

Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Ubisoft and enter the H5 folder; you'll see the language version there.

H5:HoF - unable to use runes. bug?

I have added the H5: Hammers of Fate expansion and am up to the 2nd campaign (Dwarves), 2nd or 3rd mission.  My runemage hero has learned multiple runes, but during combat they are all always greyed out.

Is this a known bug, or is there somethign I'm missing about rune usage?  I definitely have resources stockpiled of the type used by rune, and have sufficient rune skill to learn lvl 1/2 runes.

My guess is that you have a cracked game with 2.1 no-cd patch. I think there was a proper fix somewhere.

Purchased in original box, not a download or crack.

Anyway, I figured out what the problem is.

You CANNOT cast runes from the spellbook during hero's turn.  Instead you activate runes for an individual stack during each stacks turn.  I had not noticed that there is now a list of runes above the turn series bar that appears during a stack's turn.

Some of the effects are pretty good, though it seems a bit overpowering to have my melee units use charge and decimate enemy during first turn.

Would have been nice though if the instruction manual, all of 5 pages, shipped with the box had even 3-4 sentences about using runes...or about ghost mode for that matter.

Hehe that's how Nival rolls. Unbalanced and uninformed That said the dwarven lineup is not so strong on its own and needs the runes to survive. Thing is that when armies grow strong the rune strength increases and can lead to imbalance towards lategame.

I remeber that statement heh cheap Nival joke. Of course dwarfs lacks initiative and they can be easily charged by Sylvan/Haven/Stronghold, but interesting mix-up of pure tankish units (1st and 7th tiers), offensive tactical attacker(3rd tier) supported by even more interesting "shooter"/melee fighter and units of interesting specials( upgraded 6th, 2nd and 4th tiers) makes the Fortress's gameplay very satisfying, complex and victory awarding.

Developing Runemage is a difficult balancing at the edge of his stats compability (I still dont know which stats are major after for him) so it really depends on flexibility and tactic(good or bad) of player.

As for the end's game imbalance - agreed but not always and not against every faction but we have to take into consideration the fact that start for dwarfs is really difficult, so it kinda recompenses the late game power

whenever i play HOMM5 HOF using fotress town sometimes the game crashes during a battle .....or sometimes when i open the the town....i hav patch 2.1 downloaded,but in the game menu it always shows version 2.0..although upgrade launcher shows that the patch is installed......   can anyone help??????plz

So it sounds like those great features for 1.6 are gone for hammers of fate players?  Even if you edit data file dates or install patches in different orders or something?

I'm having the same issue, certain battles just refuse to be resolved but crash every time I attempt them.  So far it's on random maps, I'm very unimpressed with this Hammers of Fate expansion because it's buggier than vanilla HOMMV even if I install the 2.1 patch.  I don't think it was worth the $5 I got it for.

So I've found that the reason my computer is having problems is directly related to the arena the battle is occurring in.  I tested it in hotseat dual mode and got the same results as the battles I played in singleplayer.  This is a record of my testing:

Heroes V
-I only get a gray screen with creature stack numbers and the user interface during certain battles.
-No combination of graphics settings seem to work.
-Half of the underground battles occur in a gray-green area with white statues and green trees.  Doesn't look like underground to me.  This area has graphics problems with the ground because some of the textures on the ground are transparent.
-When I start the battle this comes up in the console three times:  "TerrainInfo: Invalid layer detected, no tile info"
-The problem didn't occur before I installed Hammers of Fate.
-The Arenas:  Keikan no Jigaku, Antipode, Sacrificial Pit give the grey screen and Tuidhana's Garden has the broken textures (holes in the floors)

Hammers of Fate:
-The crash occurs before the game can auto save before battles.
-The game crashes with quick combat enabled.
-The crashes happen every time with specific creature stacks on the map.
-Restarting a map causes different stacks to cause the crash.
-I've tested it on very large with underground and large without underground maps.
-The crashes don't seem creature specific (One stack of Golems will cause the crash and another won't)
-The crashes don't seem town specific (I've tested Acadamey, Fortress, and Inferno)
-The crashes don't seem hero specific.  (I've tested two heroes for each town)
-The crashes don't seem terrain specific (I've tested grass, and underground terrains)
-The debug console dumped four lines of this into the colsole.txt when it crashed:  "TerrainInfo: Invalid layer detected, no tile info"
-The Arenas:  Keikan no Jigoku and Tuidhana's Garden have broken textures and Antipode and Sacrificial Pit crash the game.

Plans to fix it:
I've found Zenithale's arena mod for TotE and downloaded it and I plan to see what he did to edit the arenas and make a mod for myself that can get rid of the broken arenas so I can enjoy the game.  I did notice that if I install the game on my wife's computer the arenas that break my computer aren't available to plan on duel mode.  Any ideas why?

It's fixed!
After hours of searching through Heros 5's data files I finally found that the combat arenas that were causing the crashes were in some map that I downloaded from maps4heroes.com.  I still don't know which one yet and I have to go through my entire maps folder to find it.  I still find it lame that just downloading a map with a bug in it causes the whole game to become unplayable.
