Magic Insight - is it worth it?

At first glance, Magic Insight seems like a good ability - access to all third level spells.

But then, since almost all heroes have at least one school of magic, there are normally only 6 spells you will get access to through this ability. Furthermore, those spells will also be cast without any mastery, which will make them pretty weak in most cases.

Lets see through those 8 different level 3 spells with no masteries:

Light Magic
-----------
1. Righteous Might (6 mana): This spell will only boost one of your creature with +3 attack, clearly a spell not worth it.

2. Deflect Missile (6 mana): Gives one stack 25% protection from missile attacks. Perhaps worth it in huge battles where you have one stack against all ranged troops (probably a rare happening).

Dark Magic
----------
3. Confusion (9 mana): One enemy stack will only get 50% ranged attack, or 50% retaliation. May be useful in huge battles, but still an expensive spell.

4. Suffering (5 mana): One enemy stack gets -3 attack. Forget about it.

Destructive Magic
-----------------
5. Fireball (10 mana): 11+11xpower damage to a 3x3 field. Well, this may be a tactical spell to wipe out the rest of the enemy before the enemy hero may act again, which makes this spell valuable.

6. Circle of Winter (9 mana): 60+12xpower in an 8-square ring. Cheaper and more powerful than Fireball, and may be used around your own stack. The tactical issues are the same as with fireball.

Summoning Magic
---------------
7. Earhquake (7 mana): Each wall/tower section gets 0, 50 or 100 damage. If you really have no other sensible spell to cast and MUST get through the walls, perhaps, but I can't really see the usefullness for this spell without any mastery.

8. Phantom Forces (18 mana): Makes you duplicate any creature stack level 1-4. Saving the best spell to last, this may actually be worth the ability "Magic Insight" itself. If you for instance can't use destructive magic to defeat a foe or when playing huge battles, this spell may be extremly useful. You could have 500 grim raiders and cast this spell on this stack. Even if they only get to act once before getting wiped they will do by far more damage than any destructive spell.

After my opinion, Phantom forces, and in lesser degree the two destructive spells are the ones to consider. If you have basic+ summoning magic, I would probably forget about choosing "Magic Insight", if your SP isn't to great. With high SP, taking it may be worth it for the two area spells.

I never take it. The only useful thing about it is that you can learn Phantom Forces. Though it might be useful for wizards without summoning if you have Phantom Forces in your mage guild.

This ability certainly sucks. Cast with no mastery? come on!

ok, may be useful only for Phantom Forces

EDIT: I hate that some advanced abilities require Magic Insight or Scholar, two useless abilities

I think Scholar has its benefits, esp in allied mp, and after the new patch 2.1 HoF has corrected how Scholar works

Magic Insight = Phantom Forces, and if you have the summoning skill, this ability is purely a waste of slot imho

I am still playing 2.0 and there scholar works by only teaching spells - not learning as well like in H3. Is this the new change.
I also find scholar better than before since you can save your main hero a trip to town and rather send you secondary to "pick it up" for you. Also, it works on Runes. Great with Inga may learn runes when levelling up and thereafter share them with other dwarves. To make her get proficiency in magic skills, I just mentor her with my main hero to level her up. Great.

But Magic Insight is not a priority, although Phantoming a stack of 100 blackbear riders with paw strike can be a great strategy when the destructive magic fails.
