Warning: housekeeping this weekend on the Altar of Wishes

I'm posting this over here in the Tavern for a bit wider audience.

Angelspit has likened the job of moderator to being a janitor in some ways, and I'm finding out how true it is.

One of my goals as moderator on the Altar is to clean the place up a bit.  There's 33 1/2 pages of threads there, some of which have not seen the light of day in 6 months. I have begun the slow, laborious process of evaluating some of those older threads, working my way back to front.

Some of these threads which deal with HOMM 3 issues will get moved to the Library. Some which are offtopic may get moved here. Some may be deleted entirely. Deleting a thread will only come after serious soulsearching by me, as I'd kind of like to hang on to the historical record of what we thought about Heroes4 as time went on. But some posts in those threads may get deleted if they are just simple "I agree" or "this idea sucks" comments.

On the plus side, I'll most likely be handing out some quality points on the way, and no post previously awarded QPs will be deleted.

As far as I know, this will probably affect your post count, especially for some of the long time posters here. Please don't shoot the janitor if it happens.

As long as you don't delete any threads with my posts in them its OK with me.  Like you've said many times,"If Oldtimer didn't think it was worth posting in it must be crap."

Hey Unk...

(Can I call you Unk? You haven't answered that...)

You can delete any messages by me from Altar of wishes as long as you keep "Raize towns" and "Wandering monsters" threads there. But Oldtimer was posting there so...They will probably stay anyway...

Sure ...it's probably one of the safer things to call me LOL

To clarify, this weekends cleaning will focus on threads where the last reply was before June 1. If anybody has suggestions on threads which are 'must haves' from the period ( about page 30-34 on the Altar), and which are 'send to the great recycle bin in cyberspace', please let me know by Saturday, preferably via email or ICQ.

For me, you can even delete the whole altar . I just don't post there. I post only in here, the Tavern. I had some posts in the library, but I don't read it any more. BTW: Where is my thread 'For all those HoMM2 fans out there'? If the mods decided that it's a bit out of date, I WILL shoot the janitor. But you're safe, Unka, so don't worry. I just want to know where and why is my thread, that's all.

I tried searching for it. The key word I used was HoMM2. It found a thread, but it wasn't it. Maybe it was Heroes2, not HoMM2?

Excellent initative ....

... there are just too many threads in the Altar.

As long as you don't remove threads which affects quality counts you can take away/move what you need.

Of course, I wouldn't have posted anything in the old threads, but I wouldn't mind to have my post count decreased if I had done so. If removing a post removes a yellow star then that's fine by me.

I believe having more yellow stars than red stars is a bad sign. And getting a quality point in the Altar has earlier been much more difficult than in the Tavern or Library.

I've noticed that there are already some negative post counts because members posted several times in a row in the same thread, and because they are only posting in one thread several times in a row.

Does the board keep track of how a certain post affected the post count/present post count of the member who posted it?

I wonder if we will see more of those negative post counts when we delete threads and single posts.

I disagree. You can be a very good poster, post good stuff, don't recieve any Qps, and don't care about them.

I just pos here and hope that I won't get any minuses...
This is what it should be like for all of the posters. They should post something as often as they like. But something doesn't mean anything. Ppl should forget about simple 'i agree' or 'it sux'. But then I must confess that I made a few posts like this... Unka, if you want, you can delete them.

I have more yellow stars than red stars...

Now I should be ashamed of myself...

First of all you will notice later that you will get yellow stars far quicker than red stars.

About the issue red stars being important. I think they are more important than yellow stars but they only are signs that you have got some quality posts, nothing else.
You can still post very good stuff but never get red star.

A nice advanced question there Djive

Quote:

Each deleted post is considered as one post and affects member's post count by -1. As you can see making few posts in a row is quite bad, as you may lose more PC than you gain.

Deleted posts with QP bonuses/penalties do not affect member's quality count/red stars. So if penalty post is deleted, penalty will remain.

I'll be spending 7 hours today and tomorrow on a workshop, so don't expect much from me this weekend.

Thumbs up, Haak!

...personally I really don't care...some red stars might be nice, but all I'm aiming for is average posts that will be accepted...just wondering though, can any of the moderators award those stars on any of the forums or just their's?

Thanks for the info Val.

I've noticed another thing. When a story has 20 replies it will appear as it is a thread that has one only one page on the forum pages.

However, such a thread actually has two pages, which you'll see on the thread page. So the division of threads is made one post too late on the forum pages.

This works correctly for 40 posts (which is seen as 3 pages both from the forum and in the thread.)

Preserver and Sha_men: you don't need to be ashamed. The ambition stated was one of my own and I'm not about to try and indoctrinate people to have the same view. A forum needs different types of posters to work. It's equally bad if everybody strives for only red stars or only yellow stars. Ideally, most posters should strive for a healthy amount of both.

Sha_men: The reason for us not seeing any posters with more red stars than yellow stars is that we award less quality points (on average) than we say in the forum FAQ. This makes my ambition more or less impossible, but I can still hope can't I?

But if you make significatly better posts than average, and if we awarded about 2% qp, the average for getting a third red star is 150 posts, and three yelow stars is 121. This doesn't sound impossible to me.

Then again we should always remember that Red stars and Yellow stars really are not that important anyway.

I see your point Djive...

What everybody should do is post messages that they like on their own and others can read.

So what is most important?
That you are well known or that you have got some posts that moderators have noticed having some points?

Neither. I would say:
"Honor above else"
To take account others opinions and respect other posters and their messages which are different to your own.

I think we have some truly honorable posters here and as somebody have suggested maybe there is order for one more flavor of stars. Honor points.
Some people like Lichking that always is taking care of others should have some kind of startype. There are also others...
Maybe this needs some discussion...

Update

Ok ..for now, I'm done with the threads with no posts on them since June 1.

Some of what's left there is obsolete, but worth hanging on to for a while. I think it may be fun when Heroes4 comes out to compare the actual game to our earliest thoughts and wishes about it.  Of course, If the Boss in the Big Turban wishes, I can run amok with the 'delete thread' option to free up some space there, but as I said at the beginning, I'd prefer not to for now.

Some threads were moved or deleted. In general, I did not delete any entire threads unless they drew little response, and contained little or nothing in the way of new ideas. Some QPs were awarded to those early posters, so you might want to check your profiles for any little surprises I may have left you LOL.

I'd like to thank Djive, who acted as a 'scout hero' for me, running about and drawing threads to my attention.

Now, I think I'll take a day off from the archives, and then start in on the posts from June.
