Spirit of the Forest

Didn't really like the sound of dissecting the Rampart

...so I guess if anyone wishes to, they can post here aobut the Rampart/Preserve if they want...before someone tries to dissect it and it gets all messy...

If Oldtimer tried...

...to disect the Rampart, he would have to "chat" with Ithildae Sador...

the Rampart has been my favorite since HoMM3 came out... first it was because of the Elves and Dwarves (Tolkien alert!!!) but soon I found out it's true power... economy...

about the creatures:

Centaur Captains: propably the best first level unit...
Battle Dwarves: strong, sturdy and great bodyguards for...
Grand Elves: the best shooters in the game, regarding their level, second only to Sharpshooters ...easy to kill though...
Silver Pegasi: fast and a pain for other spellcasters, not the best unit of the Rampart...
Dendroid Soldiers: these guys can do miracles with Ryland (and teleport)
War Unicorns: average sixth level unit, when the special kicks in, very usefull...
Gold Dragons: the second best dragons in HoMM3 (without the expansions) second only to Blackies...

about special buildings:

dwarven treasury: 10% of the gold you own for free, nuff said...
pond/fountain: adds to the already good economy plus a bonus for heroes...

bottom line: with a slightly above average army, a great economy and a five level mage guild, the Rampart is an average town that can beat some of the more powerfull ones...

Disecting Rampart

You guys beat me to it.

I think that rampart is above average, because of economy and strength.  If you don't loose your head, and spend like a miser, you can build a small fortune and buy out when it is important.  I like the creature mix, but think that hobbits belong their, possibly replacing the pegasi and bumping the other creatures up a level.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, everyone ignores the dendroids and they are devastating in late battle.

YES!

A thread for my favourite town! Best looking, best level 1, 2 and 3 creatures, economy, coolest dragon (+ faerie), music, alignment, spells, heroes, theme, ELVES!, unique structures, coolest dwellings, highest HP... If I'm very wrong at some points, please do not correct me as it won't make me change my mind ...

And The_Gootch, please don't post in this thread. There is no need for us to know why you hate the best town in HoMM3 (again)...

Creatures:
1) Centaurs. The uncontested top-of-the-line level 1.
2) Dwarves. They can take a pounding, but range troops will decimate them.
3) Elves. Weak base, good upgrade.
4) Pegasi. Fast and spellcasting annoyances, but not much else.
5) Dendroids. These guys are key when protecting Elves. Hold somebody down, move the Elves a step back, and open fire.
6) Unicorns. Durable, plus they can cripple a key unit at an opportune time. Magic resistance is handy too.
7) Dragons. Line 'em up for destruction! Only downside is you can't ressurect the Golds.

Special buildings:
Treasury: Big time cash.
Mystic Pond: Don't count on it for a specific resource, but it does have its uses.
Fountain of Fortune: This, on the other hand, does not have any uses.

Heroes:
Thorgrim, Kyrre, and Mephala are good Rangers. Alagar is the only really good Druid.

Overall: Definitely a strong town. Requires more strategy to use effectively than most other towns.

Nothing like good old Rampart

Centaur Captains: nothing like the speed and strenght when in lagre numbers. Besl level1 units
Dwarves: Good defense, bit slow but certanly can stand up to almost anyone
Grand Elfs: Great shooters and useful units, especialy if u use Gelu.
Pegasi: Fast and sort of strong. They are nothing special
Dendroids: Slow, but have great special, attack and defese. Very useful unit
War Unicorns: Got to love them. Nice speed, attack & defense. These guys are virtualy invisnible when in big numbers..
Golden Dragons: Imunty has a little weak point, but everything else is great about them.

Buildings: Dwarven Treasury: Can save u good moey if u buy it in the begging
2 fountains(forgot names): I like the first one better so I can get extra resources.

O'er the Ramparts

Certainly the Rampart is my favorite town.  Along with the Tower and Castle, it is the very spirit of the game.

One question: If I have 5 Rampart towns, each of which with a treasury, does that mean that I get 50% more gold each week of what I have left at the end of day 7?  What if I have 10 Ramparts?  Double the gold?

Dendroids absolutely rule, and I can't count the number of times I wound up winning a battle I thought was hopeless because of those tough-as-nails dwarfs.

I do regret that Expert spellcasting never affects the Gold Dragons.  And without Haste or Teleport, putting the Dendroids or Dwarfs to use is difficult.  Also it would be great if there were more ways to get Sharpshooters, like upgrading to them via Gelu or Tarnum.

I like to split my elf stacks once I get high numbers of them and just one stack of dwarfs near them, and sending out the hasted Dendroids.

Pegasi seem to die with the greatest of ease.  If it weren't for the number of them, it wouldn't be much worth it.

I always liked the layout and graphics of the Rampart town.  Really pretty.  And it somehow LOOKS as if it is a cool, temperate place...very relaxing.

I am not at all excited about the upcoming "Preserve."  Looks watered down and wimpy.  We'll see.

Druids should have better spells and more unique special abilities, dang it.

All that said, it's still my favorite town.

Rampart SUCKS BIG TIME !!!!!!!!! Ha Ha ha ha , muahahaha

Ok, ok sheesh! I mean it'a a good town but... fanaticism never helped anyone (isn't that right preserver?).

Good all around creatures so you can fight some tough battles.
Also, best town against magic stuff:
       1. the spec. abillities of some troops
       2. the resistance skill that comes very often to Rangers (not to mention Thorgrim)
       3. highest number of hitpoint per week so ... highest durability.

Rampart goes hand in hand with Stronghold at the economy part : good cheap creatures.

And I loove the WarUnicorns (Unicorns are too skinny),Elves(Grand Elves) and Centaur Captains.

whahahaha... you're so funny...

who is talking about fanaticism? I just mencioned the reasons why Rampart is my favourite town. It doesn't mean I would go and say: "All other towns suck!"... I do play other towns believe me... In the Castle thread I actually wrote castle was the best town, and I play with Fortress, and Conflux too. The coolest theme and creatures just goes to the Rampart, that's all...

A view from an objective observer...
Preserver, this one's just for you.
I firmly believe that the Rampart is the next to the worst town(Tower being bottom of the heap).  Faerie lovers and Tolkien-philes--stand by.
First, let's take a look at the creatures.
Centaur Captain:  2nd best 1st level creature in the game.  Sorry, for what it's purpose is, the halberdier has more staying power and therefore takes top honors.
Battle Dwarves:  Like shooting ducks in a barrel.  Slow, stodgy, stupid.  Magic resistance is nullified by the fact that they're not worth having a spell cast on them.
Grand elves:  Shoots twice...great.  Good speed...great.  15 hit points for a level 3?  Caesar vote?  Thumbs down!
Silver Pegasi:  Special doesn't make a difference in the end game.  After that, they're demons on wings.
Dendroids:  Dwarves without magic resistance.  Pathetic.  They need those hit points for the butt-kicking they're going to take from me when I train my sights on them.
War Unicorns:  Very solid level 6.  110 hit points for 900 gold?.  Magic aura not protecting them is stupid.
Gold Dragons:  4th best level 7 in the game.  Solid, if not awe-inspiring.
The Rangers can be pretty good.  Kyrre has logistics, Mephala has armorer, and Ryland starts with diplomacy(1 skill I have a new found respect for).  Unfortunately, his specialty shores up a pathetic creature and therefore is diminished in value.  Gelu doesn't count.
The druids are pretty worthless.  Only one has a good specialty(intelligence).
Structures are pretty good.  My guess was that the designers were desperate to make the Rampart worthwhile.  With dwarven treasury you get lots of money.  But what do you get to do with that money?  Buying the crap that is the Rampart's troops isn't palatable and usually it's too late to fully develop another town that you may have taken over.
The fountain of resources is the second to last thing to build.  The increase in population to your dwarves and dendroids just means that you get to buy more slugs.  Why couldn't they do that instead for your elves and unicorns?
5th level mage guild helps, but doesn't compensate for the poor creature selection .
In short, the Rampart doesn't stack up with the other towns.  True, if I wanted a challenge I could take Rampart.  Usually though, I'd rather play better players.  Don't get me wrong, though.  I'd take Rampart in a second as a supporting town, just to get the extra gold.

RMS, it is that kind of,"rah-rah, can't we all just get along" rhetoric that I can't stand.  Not your fault, I'm sure.  It's in the job description as moderator.  Does every town have ups and downs?  Does every town have advantages and disadvantages?  I state flatly--NO!  There are towns that don't have disadvantages.  The only disadvantages are those provided by the map.  All things being equal, here's my list of towns in order of their of strenth.
1.  Castle.  Gee, could anybody have guessed?
2.  Stronghold.  Would've taken 1st if Cyclops didn't compete with Behemoths for resources.
3. Fortress.  Hard to play a Gary Kasparov style of play with theses guys but I'll take my bulls to hell and back!
4.  Necropolis.  Some of you will disagree, but 1-2k skeletons REALLY worries me.
5.  Takes a tumble in the rankings.  But, the starting combo of Shakti, Alamar, and Ajit in the tavern is unbeatable.
6.  Tower.  The 2nd best units on paper.  Only problem, cost.
7.  Conflux.  Only reason why it's so high is because of the power of the elementalists and the Phoenix.
8.  Inferno.  Demon farming raises eyebrows as an interesting tactic.
9.  Rampart.  Well, well.  On the bright side, its HOMM4 clone can only go up from here.

2.  Dungeon.  Like losing to Roy Jones jr., no shame taking
second.
3.  Necropolis.  I know alot of you out here disagree.  But, name one other level one that potentially strikes fear into your heart.
4.  Stronghold.  Would have been higher if Cyclops was more accessible.
5.  Fortress.  They're hard to play with a Gary Kasparov style, but I'll take my bulls to hell and back.
6.  Tower.  The 2nd best units on paper.  Only problem, cost.

8.  Rampart.  See above.  At least it isn't last.
9.  Inferno.  Send this hunk to the scrap heap.

I have to disagree with you, Gootch. My list (and reasons for it, along with ratings 1-10):
1. Castle. Six great troops, no economy problems at all before SoD, and even now as long as you can find a Gem Pond or two, you're fine. A ten.
2. Dungeon. Mostly good units, excellent magic, and solid economically. On a map with no mines near your home, this one overtakes Castle easily. But beware on Impossible - you may be crippled early due to the Pillar of Eyes. A nine.
3. Rampart. Weaker magic than Dungeon, about equal troops, but a much stronger economy. A nine.
4. Tower. If you didn't have to find a gold mine or an Expert Estates hero to buy out, this would be #1 or 2. But the very high costs bring it down. An eight or nine.
5. Conflux, only because they get double the Phoenixes. Lose that and this town could make a run at Inferno for worst. A seven.
6. Necropolis. Weak at low levels (although skeletons are so numerous that it almost makes up the difference), strong in 4-6, but a lousy level 7 drops these guys back. The creatures are dirt cheap, which means that this town is particularly good for the high difficulty settings. A seven.
7. Fortress. Those troops just won't die! Of course, your big ones will under the gaze of Gorgons. Lack of speed is the biggest problem for Fortress. A seven.
8. Stronghold. Delivering a beatdown since ... when the heck did H3 come out anyway? Unfortunately, most of the troops (exceptions: ABs and Ogres) can't take a beating. A seven.
9. Inferno. Yuck. Bad troops (except Efreet), overpriced, and completely useless. A two, only because of the Demon-harvesting trick w/ Sacrifice and the potential of Efreet-'Geddon.
