Heroes 2 Gold For XP

Not sure if there was another thread about this but I'm just posting because my installshield for this game just pops up with an error and shuts down everytime right before the initial install. It's my heroes 2 gold from the millenium edition pack and I am just curious of how I could fix this problem. I've tried up dating the installshield... both heroes 1 & 3 work fine. Any help would be appreciated.

I recently ran into this problem as well.  I bought a new desktop computer, with an OEM XP Media Center Edition.  I only got to the third screen of the H2Gold installer (Millennium Edition, same as you), then it crashed.

Funny thing though, I can install H1 and H3Complete without problems.  And they all install and work fine (even H2Gold) on my laptop, which has a retail version of XP Pro installed.

What version of Windows do you have?  Is it an OEM edition?  Media Center, perhaps?

As far as I can tell, without further research, the problem is probably due to either the OEM edition of Windows XP, or it being Media Center Edition, or some combination of those.

It is Windows XP Pro... not sure how to find out whether it's oem or not. In either case, wouldn't I have to reinstall a different version just to play the game?

If your computer came with Windows already installed, it is _probably_ OEM, more likely so if it was from one of the big manufacturers like HP, Dell, etc.  If that's the case, it _may_be_possible_ that one of the OEM-provided drivers/softwares is causing the conflict.  But that's as far as I have gotten with that line of thought.  It would take more research to determine whether it's an OEM issue or not.

Short of reinstalling Windows, I see few options here.  One is to set up a dual-boot system, to include another version of Windows (XP retail, or even 98SE), and try installing H2Gold on the second system.  But that's a pain to restart the computer just to use one application in the other OS.

Th other option I can see is to try a virtual machine using Virtual PC or VMWare, and installing the second OS in that, and H2Gold on top of that OS.  You need a fairly good computer to do this though.

There is one other idea.  If you have another computer available, a laptop or another desktop, you could try the H2Gold on that and see if it works.

hmmm... yeah not sure any of those paths are really worth it. Heroes 2 is probably my favorite but I don't think I'm going to go that far out of my way to play it. Thanks for the input though.
