Reading this thread I found myself disagreeing with alot of what is said about a few units, here are some of my thoughts:

Deep Hydras: The closest thing to a tank that dungeon has is really far from impressive (even with haste)... It has pretty low atack and defense for it's level and it's growth isn't that high either (only 6 units/week...). Considering warlock's naturally low defense, this unit may only rely on it's hp which are quite fair, but are just not enough to make it a top notch tank. No magical immunity makes it also very vulnerable to dark magic.

The multiheaded strike with no retaliation ability would only be usefull if the hydra could be teleported in the middle of well placed enemy units, but the warlock has better options usually.

Concerinign the regenaration ability, it is only good in small skirmishes, but in a big battle that +50hp/turn won't make any difference.

To sum it up, the hp is relatively high but that's about it..., I'd rather put my money in another black dragon instead...

Treant: Very good unit, but ... sylvan doesn't have a big use for a tank, since all it's units have high defense by nature. Sylvan's high initiative makes them take more of a hit first with all you got strike approach, hence the treant will seldom have the occasion to shine.

Obsydian Gargoyle: Immunity to magic, high defense and hp makes this unit very hard to destroy. This unit is quite a good blocker, and thus offers a variety of strategical uses such as blocking large creature advancement, blocking shooters, casting armagedon.
Obsidian gargoyles offer many strategic uses, and are a great unit to have for a spellcaster and especially for a wizard.

Their relatively low growth though makes them less durable in late game battle than higher lvl tanks, but their extremely low cost allows academy to use the saved money on more highly expensive highly damaging titans and raksha rani.

You are right that the regeneration should be more than the hp of 1 hydra otherwise what's the point of having it?  You might get one back but more often you don't.  We'll see how the acid hydra works.

But I'm not so sure I would put my money into black dragons 'instead'.  By the time you have built them and have the funds for black dragons heroes will kill them 2 per hit.  Not to mention various other level 7 counters.

For dungeon Hydra and SM are the most durable units.

I like building resource silo first week with dungeon. This means I can have dragons by end of week 2, and upgrades at week 3...

On hard level?  Where is the crystal coming from? Are you skipping shadow witches?

If you only build blood furies, you have 7 crystal left, and 8 crystal isn't that hard to find in 2 entire weeks... building shadow witches and hydras can be delayed by one week too if you're THAT short on ressources.

Hmm.  I'll have to go try it myself, rushing straight for dragons.  My final theoretical complaint is about town level.  I know you need 15 and that means you'd have to build every day even though most maps start you at town level 2.

Treant by far for reasons already stated.

I never thought of the gargoyle as a tank. I guess because I'm so used to the past HoMM games where the Golem is the tank....

Uh, me.  Shield others pwns an 8 initiative infantry with cleave.  You know, there's another double swinging T3 with an 8 initiative.  And let me tell you, that unit isn't exactly one of the more popular ones in that town's lineup.

You can't just look at offensive potential.  Look at how the units relate to each other, how they can help each other out.  Nah, let my squires protect my real offense, my Archers and my Zealots.

Although noone mentioned it, i love Cheftains as tanks.
They already take lil damage, if you add rage damage absorption...
They last forever, really.

Chieftain? I prefer warmongers to take the damage actually. You have chieftain for the whip, why using them to take damage?

for my option  "tanky" creature means tough and damage dealing so my list is different than many others

PLAGUE ZOMBIES
they can take lot damage and can suprise you with their damage, but sadly ,when they get chance to deal damage,is when they retalies.slow to deal dmg,but tanky with they health. 6/10

OBSYDIAN GARGOYLE
this guys have great hp,great init, great speed and immunity 3/4 elem, they are also elementals so they are immune to mind, poison and ressurection spells sadly.they also lack with dmg, otherwise very good tank. 6.5/10

STEEL GOLEM
one of best tanks for my option, have 75% magic res,are mechanical and great partnership with master gremlins .They do also great dmg and unlim ret, only lack is speed and init, but there is academy arties and normal arties to increase it also, march of golems 7.5/10

BATTLE GRIFFIN(ToE)
interesting would i say, this guys shows that they can be tanky, thanks 52hp wich is second highest hp in his tier, also def 12 is best def in his tier.they have unlimit ret and because they "weak" init, battle frenzy is good ability to him, they also do great dmg so...
8/10

DEEP HYDRA
big hp,big dmg range,no enemy ret, mutli hitting ability is enough to say,but while regen restores only 45-50hp to compare 120hp,regen doesnt show resurrections abl often.Because their weak init they get better chances to multihitting and init can be raised with arties, this is top 3 tanky creature.
9/10

ANCIENT TREANT
and now,"godly" praised "tanky" creature from sylvan. Thanks treant dwelling wood cost,i buy dragons before treants so,i dont have hordes of them and because i am offence player,i rather choose savages than ancients. It is true that they have high health and high def(better than sylvan's dragons has ) but dmg is,dmg is good enough slay tier1-tier3 creatures hordes and tier4 depends.Because of this, they arent so good "tanks". 7/10

MAGMA DRAGON
best hp,best def in game, magma shield, elemental and immune to fire.who said that magma shield doesnt hurt? in my latest game,i lost 14 champions because it and because i play with inferno usually, magma shield kills my troops more than AI creatures.Magmas deals also great dmg,but they have weak speed,so if you dont get rune of charge, they are in defencive line. 9/10

in the end list goes:

1.Deep hydra/Magma dragon
2.battle griffin
3.Steel golem
4.Ancient treant
5.obsydian gargoyle
6.plague zombies

Battle griffin becomes tank... Why not warmonger? His fierce retailation makes him a good tank, and he is the only tank who can redirect melee attacks.

Their retaliation ability and double health makes them by definition as much tank as the golem (which is pretty tanky)

treants are the best tank hands down. Tangling roots, huge hp and def, plus their defense skill and can be rezzed by dryads. I dont even see why discuss this anyone who's played the game can tell you. Any time I lose to sylvan that's the only unit left, they're almost indestructable. 2nd would have to be gargs and mainly due to their magic immunities. Even though magma dragons are slow I wouldnt even use them as tanks cause you're just wasting a great offensive unit. With charge they can get in enemy front lines the first turn. with berserk/battle rage/rezz they'll end up doing more damage than any other unit in your army, maybe save thunder thanes with battle rage vs some poorly positioned enemy troops. Also their fire shield really owns, I don't know why anyone would say it sucked, they must not ever play fort.
