Poll Question:
PC vs Mac

I strongly believe that the PC is far superior than the Mac. I know I am not the only one who thinks this, pretty much everyone I know despises Macs, except for my english teacher. So, I would like to know: are you a PCist, a follower of Macism or are you in the middle and think both are good. Comments are welcome.

I'm for the pc... the mac is less customizable... and have less compatibility with the common global software used... for example the video games... you can hardly find the 20% of the PC games on the mac...

but there are a lot of desing tools that are native from mac... for example all adobe packages... and I'm sure the mac is an excelent plataform for this kind of applications...

but actually I guess there are macs capable to run windows with and intel processor... so I guess all about to mix all plataforms

Mac Lover

Voted for Mac.
The reason I never bought a Mac for home use is simply because I am a gamer. But apart from that, everything else simply works superior under Mac.
It has UNIX os; is this comparable to Windows? I don't think so.
And apart from that, it is more "good-looking".

A friend of mine has a Mac-notebook and the last time he really shut-down that machine was on April 2006 (one of the first days he bought it... - since then the system goes to "hibernation".). Now, is there a PC able to perform similarly? And I am not talking about Windows only (I think this is obvious), but Linux (with graphical interface) as well. I must admit though that I have never installed a true UNIX system in a PC, nor have I waited for 10 months in MINIX.

I love my Mac.  I've had my PowerBook G4 since 2003 and it's still running strong.  I love the automatic updates and security features.  The rumor that Macs can't get viruses?  I was sceptical at first but I'm believing it.  Before I got my new PC I used my Mac to surf the web.  I've never had any problems aside from the not too many games for it thing.  I never purchased it for games though.  I got it because I do Computer Graphics and as mentioned before Macs are superior in that department.  I have Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Macromedia Flash, Dreamweaver, and Freehand.  All work like a charm.

This poll has already been taken and several million people voted. PC won out over MAC. MACs may have been a little better quality and a little easier to use, but it wasn't worth almost double the cost (double at the time the PC-MAC war was raging).

Open architecture and no control over the peripherals that went inside caused lower quality, but also created tremendous competition leading to even greater price reductions.

Anyone who works in engineering is fully aware that price wins out over quality. And getting it on the market fast wins out over either one.

Was it really a fair poll?

Yes, the poll has been taken. But was it a fair one?

In the beginning, DOS O/S seemed a multipurpose O/S, and it was indeed a good one. However, the spread of IBM and IBM-compatible PCs (aka personal-computers) was the crucial factor. Industries were more or less flooded with IBM PCs. People who wanted to invest their money, logically invested on IBM-personal computer. Hence, more and more software companies were created focusing on IBM-compatible PCs, which as you can realize, had as impact the further growth and spread among commercial companies that preferred the IBM-computer-architecture. Moreover, soon enough everyone that bought a PC for home use, chose a personal-computer so that it was compatible with the computer at his/her work. However, even from the early days of computer industry games were present. And as soon as PCs started populating more houses a new audience was found for computer industry, K I D S. By 1985, children had a large share of computer's everyday use at home.
By 1985-1990, Amiga (500), Amstrad 6128, and Commodore 64 (those are the heroic for me - sorry if I forget one of yours) were the last representatives of a computer-industry that was diminishing (home-computers). The battle was simply lost for both reasons in the above paragraph. The combination of an IBM-compatible computer + MicroSoft OS was then the standard. Gradually, the portion of people that actually knew for computer industries like Apple, Sun, Silicon Graphics and the rest; was decreasing fast, while the same market was experiencing a tremendous boom. And the madness just kept on going...

By 1995, IBM-PC + Windows was the standard. Almost no-one had a reason to try something new. This was the combo in each and everyone's work, so this had to be the combo at home (for most users). And the main reason is that from some point on in everyone's life, no-one is interested in learning something new. Most of IBM-compatible users had no intention to learn a new O/S, despite the problematic situations that arose in Windows. It was much faster to reboot a machine and pray for better behavior, than buying a new computer based on a whole "new" (for them) idea, and spend equal time to learn that "new" computer. For some strange reason, people fail to see the obvious when they are directly influenced. They just think everything will turn out good by some divine force. But this thing never happens.  Of course, we can not forget that there had been a decade of the PC + M/S O/S being the standard. How easily can you revert a situation where the market is more than 90% flooded by IBM-compatible PCs. Those talking about Sun and Apple could only be seen as aliens, or something similar. They tended to offer an hour's interesting talk explaining pros and cons of other machines versus the IBM+M/S combo. And even if someone was convinced during the talk, by the very next day he would try to erase it from his memory because it was not convenient for his work. Moreover, computer-based gaming-industry represented perhaps the largest computer-software companies' share by that time. Children were the ones that kept on asking for an IBM-PC at homes and had already the greatest (if not all!) share over PC's use at home. And again, this whole situation only reinforced the IBM-compatible (+M/S) industry.

I know. The question is PC vs MAC, but the Operating System has a dominant influence on the selection. Everyone saw (and still sees) a PC on his neighbor/relative with M/S O/S and wants to know more about this fascinating world of computers. However, as software companies matured, and more computer-professionals were around, they were seeking for greater reliability or enhancements that are not present in M/S O/S. By the way, early versions of DOS came by with a programming language (GW-BASIC); now, even this interpreted language is not part of the O/S combo! Microsoft Office is certainly not the way to go in anything that supports (type-setting, handling spreadsheets, making presentations, databases, and web-pages), yet the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) features (that are similar to plain text old word-processors) make it the dominant choice. Not to mention viruses, as it has already been stated by MightyMage. It's un-comprehendable (at least to me) the requirement that someone must log-in as the administrator of the PC in order to enjoy full functionality of the OS. And this is the reason of viruses and why they are widespread among MS-O/Ss. And moreover, people are simply accepting this. They lose 1-2 times their data and then they try to cure their problem by constantly keeping back-ups and are ready to "format" their machine in case of emergency. And go through all the installation processes once again...

Fortunately though, during the last decade many actual computer professionals are present. And when it comes into commercial practice, they most likely will avoid Windows, for many reasons; perhaps most of all seeking better reliability. But during our days, another O/S has emerged, that allows this easy-going continuation of IBM-PCs; and this is Linux. Linux made it possible for many organizations to increase their reliability with a minimum budget since one could exploit old IBM-architecture. However, even everyday users realize there is something wrong with MS O/S. Take for instance the amount of people that use Firefox (or any other browser) instead of MS-Explorer. For example, 50% of the people that visit my site use a MS-based browser, and the rest 50% spans among Firefox, Opera, and Konqueror. I know I am not the typical user because I am a computer professional, but these numbers certainly say something even if my page is visited only among other people like me; since up until very recently computer professionals were more or less forced to work with IBM+MS since they had to "sell" their services to people/organizations that worked this way.

Concluding, was it a fair poll? I don't think so.

I am not basing my choice solely on the fact that I like PC better. I have used both the PC and the Mac a lot and imo,  I like the PC way better. The computer I currently have is a PC, and a fairly good one at that. Ive had it for 2 years, only once bringing it in to get a better graphics card for a game. It has never had a virus or any other problem of any kind. The Mac isnt the only machine that can desigh stuff. Do u know what hyperthreading is? If you do then you will see that PC's can design tihngs just as well. I tend to play a lot of computer games and this probably lead to my PC preference. One day I hope to own an Alienware PC so I can take my gaming further.

I believe you mean that there are not as many games on a Mac as on a PC. But I don't understand the problems for doing work? What do you want to do - regarding work - and you are not able to?

That's actually not true, you can use Parallels software which allows you to pretty much Alt+Tab between windows and Mac, so if you want to do stuff like play windows-specific software its pretty easy, and games are good because theyre such powerful computers.

to be clear I use a PC.

Btw, why do people think that Macs have better quality? Have any Mac lovers actually done performance tests on Mac vrs PC, or is it just Apple`s marketing at work that successfully convinced many people that crappy overpriced computers are somehow better? Macs may have been better at one point of time, but that time has passed looooong time ago.

Perhaps because they simply work with no real problems? I understand that you have a point on the performance of PCs, but this only reflects a minor part of computer-users. Most people don't run excessive cpu-consuming tasks. They use their computers to surf the web, use a text-editor to write something, listen to music, watch a movie, write a cd, etc. So, under this perspective I don't see a reason on preferring a PC over Mac. Both can do the same stuff effortlessly. On the other hand, the performance of the various programs depends highly on the optimization by the compiler in the final executable. Sometimes a compiler by the same company can make an executable run real fast obviously because the compiler knows the exact architecture of the machine better and exploit its good points in a much more efficient way. But this also holds for other compilers as well. For instance DJGPP generates a highly optimized executable for Intel processors; however, if you compile the very same program with DJGPP for an AMD-64, then you 'll end up with a crappy executable . I really mean it, you won't believe your eyes on the time it will require to end a process! And this brings me to my beloved compiler suite: MicroSoft. Yes, I am in love with the compilers they make! They are by far (according to my experience and testing) the most stable suite for generating highly optimized executables both for Intel-32 as well as AMD-64 processors (not to mention the remarkable work on documentation ). But of course, these compilers have also the advantage of exploiting an OS made by the same company, so, it is not only a matter of CPU (the executables also run damn fast under windows emulators - so current emulators run fast, but that's another problem ...).
So, concluding, I haven't made similar tests on a Mac with a Mac compiler so far, simply because I do not own a Mac yet. Most likely I'll buy one by September-October where I 'll be able to run some tests on source code I have especially for this purpose. If you want a copy of the source-code and results in a testbed machine, just drop me a line.

P.S.: Sorry for the late feedback. Too much work these days...
P.S.2: I believe you understand that I don't hate everything that comes with the stamp of Microsoft.
