Im just wondering...did you actually win 90% of the time with that strategy? If you did how come i dont know who the hell you are?

Your approach should be definitely not what to have but what to have on which map and what strategy you are driving.. (estimated game length, town numbers etc., distance between your opponent and amount of artifacts) And there is never a must nor generalizations in this game.
While luck and leadership are almost obsolete because of all the minor artifacts you usually find around, on large maps as for instance pathfinding can be extremely useful. Expert pathfinding on some large and complex maps may even double the level of your final hero...
And if the map is medium sized and a main battle is evident before week 5 and your expected max hero's level is 12 or so, going for air and earth magic simultaneously could be a fatal mistake since you need to expert at least in one of them to be most efficient. Usually it might also depend on what race you pick, since every race has a favorite spell chance, (necro, castle, rampart are having a much higher chance in getting earth spells in their mage guilds, tower-air spells, fortress-water, inferno-fire..)
And then there is still no generalization possible. Flamingo once outwitted Anachor and me by getting Water Magic early in the beginning and summoning a boat from nowhere unexpectedly on 2vs2 crossworlds. Imagine our surprise when we broke through the behemoths on day 1 week 3 and all the goodies were already looted lol
And where is tactics? Protection of your shooters from a first strike naturally faster race is often essential and underestimated.
