Azure Dragons and Hovel Peasants

In HOMM3 AB/SOD expansions has anyone ever been able to use Peasants successfully? At least for skeleton transformer? Any use at all? Anything?

As for Azure Dragons, they sure are cool, but by the time you get them for 30000 gold your opponent is sure to have a spell that does 1000 damage, surpassing all the defence of Azure Dragon. Has anyone ever had an experience where one of the level 10 dragons decided the outcome of a major battle? Describe vividly

Rust Dragons Rule!!!

yes i think i have been able to transform my peaseants in one game (not online) and i think there were a few online  games where those new dragons came in handy. i have had 4-5 faeries in one game and used them for my main and also for a beefed up scout killer. It was a long game on XL (4 months at least)
In another game a rust dragon was given out as a reward fairly ealry in the game and those beats rock!!! their acid defence reduction is cumulative (i have seen units with negative defence rating thanks to them) and even if you have to buy them they are not that expensive, and are the best bang for the buck i think.

Pesants.

I once found a use for pesants. I had like a legion of them and sold them in that foragers thing from Stronghold. I guess it is the only use for them.

Dragons ?

Well, I had used some faire dragons in the beginning of a campaign game (AB, the series for Mutare ? the dragon lady). It is quite cool as they can cast dangerous spells. BUT they are vulnerable to spells too... I never use those EXPENSIVE dragons vs human players. If they can be defeated or damaged by PC, they WILL definitely defeated by human.

So, I think no real use of those dragon due to their cost and vulnerability to spells. But it is fun and enjoyable to use them. I personally like faire dragons.

Uses for high-level dragons

Well, peasants are only useful as future skeletons. I don't remember their grow rate exactly, but you can get 50/60 per week, and if you have two or three dwellings and a skeleton transformer... the wildest necromancer dreams are fulfilled.

About the special dragons, it's true that in most of the maps they aren't an affordable unit. An azure dragon can cost almost the same as the entire weekly production of a town, but there are also many advantages. You can send the azures to the front, attacking two hexes, retaliating another two hexes, causing fear, attacking first in almost any battle, moving all the war to the enemy side and then go back, cure of resurrect them and attack again.

If you attack with an entire army, you have losses in many stacks. Some of them could not be ressurectable, and you must spread your healing or enforcing magic in many units. With this mighty beasts, you can concentrate only on them: cloning, shielding, bloodlusting, etc. If you play smartly, even your shooters are forgotten by the enemy.

An example: tonight I plan to finish a custom campaign I'm currently playing. I'm exploring the second scenario, a river oriented XL with very, very slow play (I'm on the sixth month and I have unveiled half of the map). Some events have told me that my enemy is waiting for me, with more than 200 Ghost Dragons and having the Cloak of the Undead King right from the beginning (so I'm expecting legions of Power Liches). The way to this enemy area (a big area) will surely have no return possible, so I'm thinking in the best army possible to sail with. I have only one Fortress Town, but my hero is an expert diplomat and a powerful spellcaster.

The mapmaker has left two possible ways to play the scenario:

A.- Apply your diplomacy to get tons of wandering fortress creatures.

B.- Recruit Rust and Azure Dragons (one dwelling of each available since the third month)

I have taken the second option and set two recruiting heroes to stand by the dwellings. I have now over 30 Azures and 10 Rust, and I've left back the basilisks and the dragon flies. I'm sure that in the final battle my strategy will rest on the powerful claws of the two superdragon stacks, while the rest of the troops (Mighty Gorgons, Chaos Hydras, Wywern Monarchs, Enchanters and Lizard Warriors) attack without retaliation or from a ranged position.

Anyway, if I had chosen the wrong way, I'll post my defeat next week (on vacation since tomorrow).

Regards

Peasants...

They are only good for sacrifice, transformer, or to use up retaliations.

The mighty peasant...

Maybe the peasants are there to give u an idea of how powerful the other creatures are. I mean 3DO wants to show us just how badass those dragons are compared to a normal human. The game with the best dragons, wins!

Have you ever despaired over a lost peasant?

I have, i just rememebered that in the same map i have had to rely extensively on fire wall (small or medium map by Scrowe to the theme of Snow White) i had some peasants in my army and i used them for blocking and taking retal. And loss of each and everyone of them was a hardfelt blow

I am serious I have never played a map with smaller forces or weirder spells. It was a blast, you should try it

And yeah Sikmar tell us how it went, and what's the name of the map/camp?

Ive played that game its impossible your giving nothing to fight with and in the end i gave up as i fought loads and was gaining very little troops to fight most of the monsters.

Battle results

Hi all

Valeriy, Maxym: The map was finally a deception. Very well planned for a long adventure, but the final enemy had no opportunity. Anyway, I caught the trick of the map on time. There was a vast swamp region with many towns. Your main hero can conquer anyone of them, but tons of enemy heros jump constantly there using one way teleporters. So, I wasn't able to mantain that towns. Soon I realized that mantaining them was not the goal and leave them to the enemy, just reinforcing my troops and going ahead. At least I arrived to the final enemy, in other island, and rapidly took the city of the win condition. The map could be improved easily giving that final enemy (isolated from the rest) some additional dwellings.

Arachnid: I don't know if we are talking about the same map. You start with two heroes, a man and a woman, and they are brothers. The man has nothing to do in all the map cos he he's isolated in the underground (for campaign story requirements) and the woman needs to sail a long way till she finds a fortress. This fortress is the only town you'll have permanent access.

About the name of the campaign, I don't remember, but I'll check it for you.

The main point, Sikmar?

How did the beefy dragons help your victory? were they useful much?

Useful dragons

Well, as I said, the rust and azure dragons were not necessary in that final battle, but they were one of the reasons to achieve an easy victory. They are too expensive for small and medium maps, but I'll never reject them if I'm ready for a >6 months adventure with good finances. You never know what legions are you going to face then. The more special dragons you have, the more of your other units survive battle over battle when you charge the dragons with the weight of battle

Fairy Tales

Yes the map was called "Fairy Tales" made by Scrowe. Its available on H3trio website

http://www.h3trio.com

and it's one of only 2 maps with 100% rating

It's hellishly difficult and very ingenous. Great storyline and so on, in other words all you could ask of a map.

I have pulled my score from the trio and i have got 376 in 92 days on imposible (i think it is default setting) but the top score was 388 in 39 days by Raistlinn if you can believe that.

And you are right arachnid its very hard to get ahead there, even a loss of 1 peaseant a battle will make a difference. I have saved and reloaded many, many times

LOL

I went and downloaded that map Fairy Tales..

I attempted it 3 times. the first two I killed myself about day 6 week 2 trying to attack a pack of trolls without sufficent magic.

The third time through the map I defeated the snow queen on Impossible Difficuly in 77 days with a score of 376.  Ranking at angel.

What an ungodly map maker lol.

And yes I was concerned about every Peasant who was killed.

But after making it to the hillfort mid week 4 with my sprites it was all good.

I guess the main reason I did so well 3rd time through was due to gaining water magic from first stone.. Huge help.

ANyway good map was fun.
