A way to swap graphics?

Is it possible to swap graphics in the game. For instance opening the graphics for an artifact, fix it in Photoshop and put it back in?
What possibilites are there for such things?

Yes it is possible. Yoi do it the same way you replace textures:

1. If you are using Photoshop go here to download a DDS Plug-In.

2. Install it.

3. Open your data/dataa1 folder, than data.pak/a1-data.pak-->Textures

4. Search for the artifact(s) that you want to change. More later.

5. Extract the .dds files and open with Photoshop.

6. Do whatever you want, and than save as DDS format.

7. Go back to the PAK file you got the original dds file out of. Put it in the PAK file in the EXACT directory (replace it). BE SURE TO MAKE BACKUP OF THE PAK FILE!!!
8. Play and see if it worked

I've been doing texture replacers for Heroes 5.  We don't have the latest patch installed, as it does seem to interfere with a lot of mods.

So far I've done some land texture replacers:

And am working on unshackled ghost textures:

I haven't put the textures in .paks yet, and have had no trouble getting them to work with HoF.  Aa they are replacers, I have them in the same folders as the originals were in.  And our game reads them fine.  The way things are sounding with the latest HoF patch, it might be necessary to have mods loose now, rather than in paks.  But I haven't been able to get anyone who has the patch to try a mod with the folders unpacked into the data folder.  So I don't know if this works with the new patch...

It does take some work to do new or altered texture versions, and you do have to save them properly of course, but it's the simplest type of modding to do, as you don't have to change any text files.  And the mods won't interfere with mods that do change text files of course.

Me and my hubby, and sometimes our 6-year-old son, who's been playing Heroes since he was old enough to use the keyboard.

Though lately he's been really into playing Heroes 3.
