I think I have an idea. You both need to have version 1.0.1.5 (895 KB) of hamachi as the newer versions are bugged. If that does not work I'm at a loss.

ok... let's take it slow

I don't know what's hamachi... but I can tell you we both have 2.10 game version... mine, from my complete edition, my friend's from an original dvd updated over the internet.

we play in lan, using a connection cable.. not over internet connections or other complicated stuff... just network, tcp-ip, with my firewall off, my computer being the host.

what does hamachi involve ?

Oh, sorry my bad Practically hamachi creates a virtual network but if you can already play through lan you wouldn't need it. The reason I'm stumped is that if there is a problem you usually can't join, not disconnect after 1 turn..

My friend can see the host, can enter the chat room, I start the game, which I set with simultaneous turns, and after the first action I do with my hero, or my friend with his, it writes "X has been disconnected"... And I could keep on playing, but alone.

This happens with all HOMM V games.

We managed to play the game in lan one year ago, but nothing in the connection type or computer configuration changed since... only patch versions (under 2.x)

First of all, your PC has changed in configuration since a whole year ago. Why? Your O.S. always gets updated and upgraded plus, its configuration must have changed drastically ever since.

Second, go to the Run function of your Start menu and make us a DxDiag(Thorough diagnosis of your PC's internal hardware's and all other system apps that make that PC of yours run)

Third, LAN is a very sensitive communicative network. You must send this DxDiag right away to the LAN's Server System Administrator for acknowledgement of your configuration. If, it is not acknowledged, make sure to get a list of what is to be modified/changed for becoming nsync with the LAN Server.

Hope I did not lose you in all of this and, wish you all the luck in this real world of ours.

If you are playing through LAN, then you wouldn't need to do the tcp ip stuff. That is what you do when you are hosting a game over the Internet and then you give your friend your IP address and then you enter that in order to get into the game.

But since you are trying to enter via a connection cable (I assume that the connection cable is going through your computer and into your friends computer) then all you would need to do is just select a lan option to play (I am assuming that Heroes 5 has a LAN option, as do most other games).

Hamachi is good if you want to play across the internet but you are unable to play a game via TCP/IP because it will not work. guess it is an easier way to play games by setting up a virtual LAN connection, but that is basically what a TCPIP game is.

Hope this helps.

That's about what my friend and I use.
I host a multiplayer lan game (yes, there is that option in HOMM), my friend can join it, but we both get "disconnected" when either of us does something (entering the castle, building something, hiring a hero, getting a chest etc.)

True, there were a lot of updates in my computer since last year, when I could last play the game with no headache. But still, game version has been updated, as well... shouldn't it have solved such problems?

No hamachi required... I'm using a simple network cable of which both ends are in my and my friend's computer. What next?

keep 'em coming please

Perhaps the cable is faulty? DAre you sure your friend has updates for the game as well?

And do you shut off all tasks when trying to run the game just in case something is shutting it off?

And have you configured your firewall settings? This might be a problem if you do not have the appropriate ports opened for your friend to be able to access your computer via the lan cable.

Let me check my firewall...

I have my firewall turned off, my friend has its turned on

To my fault, there were no exceptions towards HOMM set... I'm doing those changes now, should it be this problem.

I don't really remember if this was the issue about a year ago, when I could play the game on lan.

I'll be back with the results, if any changes appear. Thanks!

Ok... made a few changes in the exception list, HOMM V and HoF seem to be working fine (although I don't know for how long, exactly).

When trying to play Tribes of the East, I noticed... it's moving glaciar slow... I don't get disconnected, thank God, but why so slow?

BTW... thanks for the help

Progress... I found out for how long it would work
And the answer is... 5 minutes. The game didn't last as long as I wanted

You said something about right ports being added so that my friend can join my game easily... how do I do that?

You can do it via the firewall that you both have. If you are both running XP (dunno about Vista) then you can go to the Windows firewall and then the ports and open these ports:

Heroes of Might and Magic 5
TCP Ports - 6668,40000-42999
UDP Ports - 8888,42500,44000,45000

one problem...
When I host, my firewall is off... so if I set these ports, shouldn't I tick firewall on and untick "Don't allow exceptions" ?
what should my friend do ?

If you host, then your friend should do the same as you regarding firewalls and port forwarding.

Ok, I did all these.
HOMM and HoF are going fine, but TotE keeps crashing.
It's a step forward, anyway, but I still don't understand what happened.
If you have any other ideas for TotE, please feel free to share
Thanks!

What is the error that Tote gives when it crashes? And does it crash with your computer or his?

The game crashes for both of us simultaneously... we get a "X has been disconnected" message, where X is me (on my friend's computer) and the other way round.
And after that, each one can continue the game, but alone, with 3 bots instead of 2.

Hmm, are you running any other programs that might conflict with the lan connection?

And did your friend do the same as you did regarding ports and the firewall and everything?

I rarely open any other programs when playing games.. so does my friend.

Concerning ports, we did the same, but I keep my firewall off, while his is on, with exceptions for the game.

What now?

Make sure that he turns off his Firewall as well. That might be the problem.
