Do you give up?

I was just thinking (yes it is pretty rare nowadays, lol!)

How long does it take for you to concede a game? I hear of people giving up when they find out that their opponent has got a pandora's next to their home castle.

Do you give up after you lose your main? Do you give up after you lose your main castle? Do you have the guts to fight to the very last scout?

LOL. Are you an EASY KILL?

Edit: revived!@

My favorite subject..LOL

Well...
Odds are odds...

I think many see that "giving up" is disgrace. Thing is that I happen to pay from online connection so playing the game means I'm using money. So if I give up I don't lose so much money because the game is more quickly over. Also I know some players don't like to ask other one to surrender (I never ask) and it's sometimes friendly to say I'm giving it up if you're down and there isn't anything left to do.

Sometimes I have feeling that I can still manage brave battle and then I don't give ever up. I think there isn't point to fight if you have no chances. There is fight for "honor" yes but for me HoMM is just game. The game means lot to me but I'm not sure does it somehow show am I coward or not. Some people just live in illusion that they can still win when they have already lost the game and just want to keep their illusionary pride so they don't "lose" so much. Then they can stand as proud losers. I laugh to that. If you are lost, you are lost and gone. In many games I say that "I'm lost now". Sometimes I say for real sometimes just for little cheat so opponent thinks I'm finished. Then I have better chances to beat him as opponent isn't sure am I giving it up or not...

Maybe I'm not just so "heroic" as some are in some games but that doesn't reflect my real life behaviour.
In real life I always stand for what I believe.

However as someone has said, it's better flee and find better day to fight than stand still and lose.
Still I find many times myself saying what ever the outcome might be...
"Let's finish the game"

I would usually give up after I lost my main hero and there's no feasible way to get him/her back and there's no other decent secondary heroes.

Fighting to the very last scout is futile. And seriously, HoMM3 MP session takes tremendous amount of time so why keep fighting a game where you see no chance of winning at all? It's wasting time and not to mention no fun.

Either I am the victor or the loser, I will usually discuss it first with the opponents whether we should end the game or not.

I play until the end, just because crazy things can (and occasionally do) happen - like your opponent pursuing you, you outrunning him (on bad terrain or with Logistics) and beating him to a nearby castle just in time.

Frailty, thy name is woman.

heh, oops...nevermind that up there...probably wasn't a good idea

...hmm, really though, I rarely give up in most games...however in turn based strategy games, sometimes I do give in though, either if I know I won't get another chance to finish the game, or simply that I know the map is rigged, and I did something completely idiotic, to set myself up for a complete loss...

...but usually its my stubborness to concede that gives my rival even more enjoyment from slowing coming, and killing me off little by little
...sometimes I just get flustered though and want to get back at them though, but usually I never get the chance...

Generally I like to fight it out to the death, and that death usually involves the taking of my main and my castle. I have fought 'main' battles plenty of times, only to lose by small margins and satisfactorily end the game to go and report. One thing I was thinking of though is that I played a game with a ToH guy about a week ago and I accidentally stumbled onto his main with a full army. He'd been goading me into attacking him (I had three castles, he had one). My second castle was well built. Hydras, mighties, 100 lizardmen warriors and my main was less than at full strength. I lost the main battle and immediately conceded. It wasn't until after the game that I realized that I could have easily come back and given him a run for his money for the next four weeks or so and we could have had a lot more fun. Not only that, but the chances may have been tipped in my favour considering that I had a secondary that could have demolished his main had I been smart enough (now THERE'S a thought! lol!) to take a look at how many 'unpurchased' troops I had in all three castles.

Once I played a game against Rychee, and he made a move against my castle when he found out that I was about three days good travel away from it. I still had two towns and a decent number of scouts and the way he was chaining, I kinda figured that his own castle was about two days away from mine. My scouts were hidden in little pockets where I knew he couldn't see me and I used my main as 'bait' to draw him away whilst hoping that he'd be foolish enough to leave a castle unguarded.

But ToH Colonels are never that dumb, lol! The game lasted another week before he managed to corner me and pick me off. LOL it was fun.

Sha, I know that you pay for online access which to me sounds a little silly (why don't you get unlimited access?), but I think that if I quit a game or conceded it too early, I could be robbing the other player of some enjoyment, not to mention myself. And can you really separate honour playing a game with honour in life? Are the two not one and the same?

You play until you have an untenable position then there is no reason to continue, you're just postponing the inevitable.  If I am ahead on castles and the opponant beats a main, well conceding then is a little premature.  Loosing the main can be devastating, but could be a good strategy.  I love having an undertrooped main seemingly too far from home and luring the opponant to kill my main after a titanic battle, then killing his main with a decent secondary(preferably with chains).  This can give me the upperhand with a new main that is more powerful than the opponants.  Kinda like sacrificing a queen in chess, only do it if it will bring you the win.

Honour...

I'm not going to say what honor is as there is one entire thread for that...
But I don't take these games so seriously as I take life. I've been situations in life when I have had to choose to fight to bitter end or give it up. Usually I have fought. I don't mean necessarily fighting literally but when making important choices.

In game if I lose my main hero I look at my chances for few turns and then give up if I don't have enough troops. I never go fighting to my last scouts because I know how painfull it's search them. Maybe I think also my opponent for some reason so he wouldn't have so boring game when he is winning. Of course giving up too early could be lack of respect towards opponent and shows that you are only plaing for easy win or not win at all.

Shae, where I live unlimited access costs still too much. It's cheaper to stay like this and because I need my phone access to normal calls it's easy to choose this. Not that I wouldn't want to change to something better but I'm little bit short of cash right now...so if you could send some money I could...then we could take that online game together...only question is: When you would be giving up?

Funny thing....

I played a couple of ToH games yesterday, one in particular was last night after I'd had waaaaay to much to drink and just wanted to zonk out with a good game. The guy was an experienced HoMM player, but relatively new to online multiplay. Even though we spoke the same language and all, we didn't quite hit it off as well as we could have (i couldn't type very well either I guess, although at the time I thought I was doing pretty good! lol!).

I had the upper hand right from the start, I knew the map just as good as he did, yet he only hired a scout and his main. I ended up scouting out most of the map with 4 scouts before he even left his area and then I was fortunate enough to come across some angel wings. Next turn I was about 2 steps away from his castle (it was week 5 by this time and he'd had hemoths since week 1). My main had not been resupplied with new troops since week 2, but even still I figured I had enough of a chance to destroy a fair bit of what he had hidden inside his castle.

His main came out of nowhere with a heap of thunderbirds and 5 ancients with about 50 orcs and proceeded to flatten me. I killed his ancients and left him with about 12 or 13 orcs to spare before I retreated.

He was confident after having beaten my main and immediately resupplied the following day (week 6 day 1). One of my secondary heroes (now my main) with considerable numbers of lvl 3,4,5 and 6's had not bothered to chain with my main hero and I was silly enough to have him wander off in search of much needed gold while he could (the things you do when you're drunk!lmao!).

I was left with a shattered main and only one weeks worth of fresh troops to stave off an attack.

His own attack was swift and without fear, but with him being Stronghold and me having chosen Dungeon, I had magic, spellpoints and a vortex and he had no book at all. I blinded his rocs and orcs and proceeded to pick off his 4 ancients. I survived that battle with about half of my 'week' army.

The second time he attacked was two weeks later. I had the upper hand this time and waited for him patiently in my castle. He was hopeful of a win, but STILL hadn't gotten a spell book and I was able to blind him and destroy him once again.

I knew now that he wasn't going to do any more rushes into my area, so I thought it a good time to link up my 'flying main' with my lost secondary with all those mid level troops. The computer attacked my secondary hero twice with 2 fairly decent enemy heroes and before I knew it, 3 weeks worth of serpicores, minotaur kings, medusas, etc had been wiped out....  F$&^%#!!!

Errrr..... lol! Now I was going to have to attack him with about half of my indended troop numbers. Not really what I had invisioned. It was going to be really difficult to do this against a main like Craig Hack in his own Castle...

The guy turned around and said "I quit. This will go on forever, so I'll go and report that you won. See you later"

System: Roger has left the game!

WHat?!

I was drunk as a monkey, having a really great time and this guy decides that the game is going to go on for too long?! So he forfeits?!

LOL. Don't get me wrong, he showed all the courage in the game by attacking my main once out in the open and twice more in my home castle, but having decided that it was impossible to conquer me in my own home, he leaves... He gave up a whole day too soon. He would have watched me come straight for him and I probably would have lost in the attack. I can see that the game eventually would have shifted focus from killing each other asap to conquering the enemy castles to see if that would have given either of us some leverage.

But he quit before then.

I don't feel nice taking that win. But then again, he gave up. I didn't.

Giving up has not really been in my vocabulary, except when I play on a team and either me or my opponent's teammates leaves.  Even with the AI on 130, it's just not the same.

One on one, I have never quit, nor do I intend to start.  Haven't yet grasped victory from the jaws of defeat, but I figure that there'll be a time for it in a later game.

Interesting thread, so here are my 2 cents

I don't give up as long as I see a chance of winning the game; and indeed, I've had several games which turned out well unexpectedly.

What really sucks are forfeits on day 7, week 1, cause my opponent didn't manage to conquer a gold mine or to build a certain structure, without even one lousy fight. That happened to me once in a "just for fun" game - never played again for fun since then

To Shae: unbelievable story - I didn't have toooo many close games yet.. and now that you got one, opponent forfeits before the fun begins - lol. Must have really been a newbie; I wonder WHAT you were drinking

I never surrender.  I always figure that it's possible for my opponent to do something really stupid with his/her main hero, and then I'll make a huge comeback and win.  I'm always thinking, "Well, it's possible that LordGremlin will mis-click on that stack of Black Dragons, right?"  When I'm playing agianst myself, which I do quite frequently, I often run with a scout commanding a whole Harpy toward my opponent's castle, hoping that I'll outrun him, reacha a town where he didn't buyy troops, build up an army, and kill his main in a titanic battle.

It against him (meaning "me," of course)  more often than I'd like to admit.

I'm proud to say that I surrender.  Playing chess from an eary age, I learned that resigning was better than being checkmated.  When my main hero clashes with my enemy's main, it is an all or nothing affair.  I rarely make mistakes and yes, I do put all of my eggs in one basket.  May the best man win(or woman).  If you defeat me then I will graciously accept defeat.  As for being an easy kill, you'll find that I'm anything but.  You'll have to find out for yourself Shae.  I haven't played with you since you were calling yourself Matron_Baenre.

Strange story Shae...

Something about honor...

You see honorable to play the game to end but you are drunk when playing it?

I think I could consider that disrespectful towards your opponent if you are drunk when playing. It also gives you great excuse to be losing the game.

I would never play anyone seriously if one says he/she is drunk.
And if it is only fun game why to care do you give up or not?

Sha_Men ,
I like your posts a lot man, but you've got to ease up.
So what if she played drunk? She won after all .
The main thing is having fun along with playing with honor.
I didn't think she dishonored herself if she played drunk, but, again, it's just a perspective thing.
