But HC didn't exist for that long when you joined, whereas it already existed for a while by the time I joined. I think your real reason for saying what you're saying is that you think that I'm a newer member than you, a symptom among many older members. I'm guilty of it.

Wolfman was a worthy member. Unfortunately, he left. You shouldn't tell people to leave! That's what got HC into this mess.
I'm not going to leave HC. At least, not yet. But I can see Val posting something like the below in a year, or maybe in 2 or 3 years. But it'll happen.

I'm sure you, the reader, are getting alarmed reading this. Is Val leaving? you are probably thinking. What is to become of HC? Who would take over? Or will he simply let HC sink and disappear in the depths?
I am not leaving HC. HC is leaving me. HC has always had a special place in my heart. HC has always been special, until now. It's turning into a run-of-the-mill message board, of which there are hundreds of thousands, if not more. Now HC has ceased to be special. I check HC once in a while, disinterestedly. There is hardly ever anything interesting any more.
But I cannot bear to see HC sink any lower. This is why I will archive it. It was a difficult decision. Many newer members would not understand why I made it. It is overoptimistic to think that HC will rise again. A wise member once said that HC has cycles. For a while, it was a rise, decline, rise, decline, etc. cycle. Now it is a death cycle, like that of a fatally ill man. Medicine only temporarily helps. But, to quote the H4 intro, "To all things comes an end."
I will not point fingers at those responsible for HC's decline. I will say that it was not caused by "abuse of mod power", as doomsayers have been crying since the very beginning. It has been as much my fault as the mods' or the regular members' or the guests'. I do not encourage anyone to point a finger at anyone else. A better thing to do would be to consider HC's current state, and to browse the older threads.
You might go to other message boards dedicated to HoMM. But I hope that HC will always have a special meaning for you. Maybe I will reform HC as a Starcraft community someday (cookie to anyone who gets it).
Once in a while, I will look at the HC archives, and think to myself, "This was a truly great thing."
I will close this thread, as well as the rest of HC, in a week.
But prophets have been wrong before. Look at 2Extreme's time machine thread. But I fear that something like this might happen.
