HoMM Chronicles

I had a very nice day. I went a trip, saw an old friend, remembered some good-old fun times and generally had a good time.
But night descended upon us and it was time for me to go, an idle 2 hour journey back home. Feelings of nostalgia for those earlier times coupled with HC thoughts gave birth to a pointless string of thoughts that you can blame for the origin for this thread!
Heroes have had a long saga so far and many things have changed since the beginning. Let's take a look throughout their history!

Heroes I

In the beginning they were four, the core classes that formed the cornerstone of the series and continue to exist and evolve. At the time they were on the conquest of a brave new world and fought to carve their path in the inhospitable land of Enroth.

The heroic and chivalrous knights in shining armour, the might class that guides the human troops into glorious battles and defending their code and the innocent(yeah right!). Not much for magic skill but they were good leaders which was rather essential with the troops they had!
The peaceful and kind sorceresses that led the sylvan forces and hoped to preserve life and the environment. They had a good control over water and the luck of nature to aid them but also considerable magic talent.
The power-hungry warlocks that used a combination of magical aptitude and powerful evil beasts to destroy their opposition. Strangely they liked scouting and are the ones to blame for this unending obsession with dragons nowadays.
Finally the reckless and mighty barbarians that led the savage tribes and had little in mind other that fighting. Maybe they had just little in mind anyway

Heroes II

After a while Enroth was conquered and was the time for the Succession Wars. Heroes were needed again but this time they weren't noobs anymore, their skills had increased. They revised the earlier magic system and decided to pursue some skills apart from gaining primary stats. Also they decided to upgrade some of their units so that they could be more effective. Probably the most memorable moment in their history. But some guys got jealous and decided to join the team.

The wise wizards appeared, a strong and resilient faction with good spellcasting to rival the warlocks. Sorceresses were girly and this was a guy thing, an ego to be settled.
And what kind of strategy game would it be without the necromancers? These guys used to love raising skellies even then though their theme wasn't as scary. The most memorable thing in them is the fabled 'blah!' vampire battlecry! Sandro the skull warlock guy changed sides and joined them.

Heroes III

By then Enroth had become boring so they decided to move on to another continent Antagarich. The heroes grew a lot more skilled this time.
They could learn more skills, they changed the magic system again to a mastery of the elemental magic and developed specialties. Also they were bored with the same starting skills for a game and an expansion and decided to pursue a new set each plus the might and the magic classes were split per faction.

The sorceresses were succeeded by the druids a more might-magic balanced class which also had a thing for luck. They favoured all kinds of magic except fire while their might counterparts the rangers were more into defense and archery. The sprites and phoenixes were pissed to see the sorceresses go and abandoned the faction, along with the druid units that changed their robes and decided to pursue spirituality by joining the knight forces. The new heroes lost the urge to hear opera.

The knights were about to be pwned by the demoniac-warlock alliance so they joined forces with the griffins and the angels. But truth be told they were just tired of having just human units. They were joined by the clerics to oppose evil in pure holy fashion. There was a disagreement with the crusaders so they stepped down from their tier and let the hard work for others to handle, tier 4 was easier-less responsibility you know.

The barbarians battle hardened as usual got a sense of honour but became more offensive. They got some new units to exchange punches with and remade their orcs so as to look less ugly. The battlemages decided to come so as to raise the average IQ of the place. Best quote by Crag Hack:'Thinking hurts too much'

The warlocks after all these mosquito bites decided to go underground where they could also enjoy the shade. They ditched the hydras to find more scary units as well as the green dragons that didn't look evil enough. To handle the new beasts they called the overlords.

The hydras went with the new heroes the beastmasters and the witches where they also found fellow lizards. Seriously defensive guys, one of which was abused by Doomforge I hear. Luckily they got a little boost in armageddon's blade though people continued to shun them.

The necros decided that they looked too silly and changed their theme into something more serious and morbid. They kicked out the mummies to be neutrals and were joined by the black knights to ease with the slaughtering and skeleton harvest. The might role took the death knights a role they were rather good at with some nifty spellcasting powers too.

In all these there had to be room for heretics so the alien demon-like Kreegans stepped forth with the demoniacs to lead their ranks. They had an unhealthy passion for fire and torture, especially whipping. Roland Ironfist got a good taste of it. But bad guys must lose so they were usually pwned by the knights. Who goes to fight a greatsword with a scythe anyway?

To complete the picture the original(not) yet cool theme of conflux came to be. Truth be told this beautiful faction was created because the forge creators got a death threat or two which sparked a new inspiration! The phoenix and sprites that had stayed out of a town for a while joined the elemental army under the command of the elementalists a crazy spellcasting class and the kinda boring yet effective planeswalkers. They had a cheesy grail structure too.

3DO in a quest for more money introduced the heroes chronicles a half-baked series of mini campaigns that explained how we moved to the next installment. Apparently Gelu was an idiot so he decided to find the sword of frost to destroy it yet managed to destroy the world instead. Indirectly.

Heroes IV

With the Reckoning, the heroes lost their planet and conveniently enough fled through portals to Axeoth. With all these earthquakes, floods and destruction they developed drinking problems so they started drinking potions heavily. Especially the immortality ones, nice booze. Also they had little mind for other skills and got suicidal tendencies to fight in the front lines. Not to mention that they lost their artificial intelligence. The elemental magic was forgotten as well and each faction got their own spell school. The units decided to become a little more independent so they could move on their own, lost their upgrades and were split between the castles in a vain attempt to introduce a new strategic option.

The haven heroes decided to split duties so the knights took the leadership and the clerics the life magic-they got to raise dead units like a necro too! Freaked out the griffins turned to the preserve where they were almost never hired.

The preserve became more interesting with the addition of the creature portal so the phoenixes returned along with the sprites. The heroes began to like opera again and followed the path of archery(rangers) and nature magic(druids). They took in some tigers and wolves to fit the sylvan theme.

The necros got some serious buffing this time. They developed their necromancy so as to raise ghosts and vampires which along with the awesome(for once) bone dragons gave them a bit of an edge. Also they turned to demonology as a feeble excuse for the undead-demon alliance The efreet were the only to protest and fled. Some demoniacs turned into death knights so as to still be in the game.

The warlocks now turned to sorcerers and got a good sense of humour-just look at their spell descriptions! They also revised their unit lineup and followed the forces of chaos. The efreet, the new nightmares and the rarely used hydras() joined their ranks. Along with the chaos ideology came the sneaky thieves, the only hero class with such levels on enemy annoyance.

The wizards got a mechanical twist and were finally able to make gold golems and golem dragons. They took an interest in order and hypnotism while the lords took care of the nobility and diplomacy.

Finally the barbarians that gave up completely magic(probably didn't get the new rules) and became machines of destruction. Also took breeding as a hobby.

Heroes V

Soon after the heroes went out of business due to bad balance and cheesy expansions but they came back for one more shot! This time they came under a new company so they had to cut their ties to the past...As a result they got a new skill and magic system, racials, specials a new setting and a bad storyline and voice acting.
Their units decided to take on a new look and thus ripped off ehm borrowed some things from other known franchises.
The heroes regained their logic and went behind their troops as well as got a decadent attitude. They made their towns 3d so as to look more cool but that left their AI retarded so they had to turn to a life of cheating lest someone notices. Envious of the necromancers the rest developed their own racial skills and an ultimate ability for pwnzor tactics or so they thought.
Also in the name of originality came some new twists.
The dark elves lost their tan(or maybe put on too much make up) but were called dark in the name of their worship. The climate got hotter to so the blood furies and matriarchs had to put something more comfortable on. The sylvan treants were deemed unoriginal so they turned into alien tree ants with red glowing eyes to show that they are on the good side. Unfortunately in the process they lost their turbo boost ability The clerics became fanatical but also sensitive to the sun, hence their new helmet. Dragons bacame too popular around so every faction must have a few of them so as to be cool enough, plus some other funny stuff! Due to a weird phenomenon called 'patching eternal' the game seems to change all the time

Now about the factions. Due to upkeep issues the second hero class had to go plus many heroes were fired to the point we have only 8 per faction. The tradition of useless heroes continues of course.

The knights faced with a powerful peasant syndicate had no choice but to give in to the demands for more food. Obesity ensued among the peasants for the first time. The knights decided to use training so as to make something useful out of these peasants which worked until patch 2.1 when Dow Jones had dropped and the training became cheap. The crusaders abandoned their posts once again but the rest remained loyal. The angels made a face lifting but now it's hard to make out if they are guys or girls...

The rangers began liking tree architecture, which is most friendly to the environment. That convinced the druids to return while the treants faced with a pre-beta shock became anorexic and lost weight just before the release. An important part of the ranger training became avenger so as to match their D&D counterparts.

The wizards took in the gremlins once again but while keeping their armies intact they exchanged the nagas for the rakshasas that had a cooler design. Out of shame. the djinns covered their heads. I must also mention that the titans got a nice tan and went bodybuilding. The wizards also began producing artifacts after a marketing campaign though be warned-there are cheaper products out there.

The demonlords have been the least consistent faction in their history! Many of their units went missing which makes you wonder how it is related to their newfound corpse-consuming appetite Maybe they didn't find their way to this new world, gating isn't very precise thus only a percentage appears when a unit gates The rest end up where the H4 banished units are. To make up for that and draw attention to newer members the demonlords took a LotR approach with orcen drums and a more evil and brutal theme which seems to have worked. The nightmares(a natural evolution of a hell charger coupled with energizer) and the truly hot succubi followed suit. All units play quite different even the old classic ones(which got a stronger and brutal remodeling btw ) and coupled with some hero abilities can set their opponents in fire-they feel inferior when only they are in fire.

The necromancers were told off by the others for vampire gathering the last time so they came up with a plan to still be imba but with a low tier unit so as not to show But making the skellies ranged was just as noticeable. Once they decided to make a fresh start they got rid of their previous knowledge so they start with only 1 now. But no matter spirit link and intelligence could make up for that. Then out of the blue things changed
Necromancy in a true sign of inspiration was completely redesigned, given the concept of a dark energy pool and able to raise any kind of undead unit. Speaking of units I still don't get something. Ok I had hoped for vampires to get swords and wraiths to get a scythe but what's with the ballroom dress of the liches? Is this due to bad taste or are they hiding illegal things in there? Or did they want to look large and menacing so the dress could give that impression?

Dungeon now controlled by the dark elf warlocks decided to use weapons of mass destruction. But dark elven nature is naughty and they decided on using weapons of mass distraction too such as fighting with bikinis. As dungeon suggests they returned to their roots, away from swamps() in that shady place where they could kill more things than their time without censorship. That drove them to become more offensive, an essential part of their strategy now. The theme is strangely familiar...

Farmers of Hate

The dwarves came as the most predictable new race in the universe! Hail the runemages!
Crafty race, their tactics are pretty unconventional:
Their bears bump on enemy units to throw them back, the spearwielders throw slowing spears, the priests set the battlefield on fire and the warlords pretend a flaming attack from the right but instead fry you with lightning from the left one. The rest umm hit you. Plus they keep some fancy runes with interesting effects in their pockets.

Main characteristics: Scottish accent, fat&stubby, immaturity, forge addiction, tendency to drink. Surprising that there are no vodka references! And and keep in mind that Wulfstan is sometimes drunk but always smart

Tribes of the East

Enter the bloodrage! All this spellcasting threatened the balance so another might class had to enter the fray - the barbarians. But the catch was make them exclusively might AND balanced which surprisingly worked. The orcs are a bit stoopid to realize that spells can hurt them so that gives them an inherent magic protection, their thick skulls are just hard to penetrate. These sadistic warriors also gain supersayan bloodrage levels when they get to beat others making them pretty dangerous. Also they enjoy playing with war toys and killing Kevin goblins.
Ubi had been hinting at a naga faction so it is possible that they kicked some naga butt behind the scenes to get their place in the expansion. Think they'll be back for revenge?

Actually I don't mind, I rather like having 2 factions having a dragon and bone dragons for a necropolis is a classic. However why did the dwarves have to get one more dragon? It's not about disliking the dragons but not using the tier 7 slot for something new, something different.

Yes, of course! I liked the sorceress theme but the addition of a male spellcaster somehow was to be expected. Through a post you may see the author's beliefs or the beliefs of others that the author wants to portray Which is which?

Sorry I did not have the time to complete it, I'll get to it soon enough! Since it is about chronicles of heroes I may write about some famous heroes but there is a slight problem about that. Apart from a hero's biography and portrait the only other source or insight for his personality are the campaigns so chances are I will start from H3 should I proceed with that idea, maybe borrow some parts from the previous titles to complement it.

Edit: Added the remaining factions.

By the way, something I found in the text; I'm surprised no one noticed that:

*bump!*

Came across some of my old threads and felt some things missing. For one the dwarven description was not satisfying and the orcs had to be added.
The thread is finally complete. For now

....Nothing on the new upgrades for the old units?  Or wasn't there anything to say?

most memorable thing in them is the fabled 'blah!' vampire battlecry!

Can't be worse than "We're very strong!'(That's what it SOUNDS like) from the Vampires of today in victory...or the 'Blah' from Heroes 4 and 3(?) Vampires when hit...

but what's with the ballroom dress of the liches? Is this due to bad taste or are they hiding illegal things in there? Or did they want to look large and menacing so the dress could give that impression?

Probably got spell ingredients in there.

What I wanna know is why a unit that, in melee, swings a sword with great force via telekinesis(No physical force involved, like with the knives of the Mages, only magic, which they're GOOD at) STILL has a Melee Penalty.  It makes sense with the others, they're using weak daggers and the like.  The Lich's sword is about the same as a Footman's or other Knightly troop's.
