Emos under further scrutiny.....

A month or two ago some emo-ish girl, Carly Ryan, was found murdered in Port Elliot, South Australia. Sources claimed that the suspects, who claimed to be her stalker and even arranged for the man and his son to meet with Carly, on her MySpace account.

To many people she wasn’t the typical suicidal emo kid. In fact some of her favourite bands belonged in the post-hardcore genre. It’s a similar subculture to emo, except with screaming replacing singing, and has more heavy metal leanings in musical style.

The lyrics, instead of the suicidal ramblings often found in emo music, is more concerned with wanting to harm someone else instead of harming his or her own self, usually as a result of a disastrous break-up. The clothing style is similar. The tight black jeans and old Skechers shoes are akin to emo fashion, but emo haircuts are not as commonplace, and that there are no cutting marks usually associated with emo culture. Post-hardcore people also have a straight edge mentality (no drugs, no alcohol and no promiscuous sex).

Just this Monday, another two girls with emo leanings were found dead in the scrublands in Victoria. The cause is unknown, but the two girls had formed some kind of suicide pact and even posted about it on their MySpace pages.

Typical emo? Definitely.

Perhaps these girls purposely swallowed the razorblades they used to cut themselves, and the recent emo phenomenon has created suicidal imagery, but now it’s time for us to realise what children really are feeling inside. For any parents out there who find that their children are wearing exclusively in black and covered in cutting marks, it’s because they take music from My Chemical Romance and Funeral for a Friend way too seriously.

Those who take rap music way too seriously take drugs and commit serious crimes. Those who take punk music way too seriously start fights with pretty much anyone. Perhaps emo culture is a step in that direction too.

I have to disagree heavily with what you said here.

I like rap music a lot, but you do not see me having drugs and committing crimes now do you?

The music is not making the people do that, it is their own choices, and maybe some peer pressure. I don't think someone would suddenly go take drugs, they would have had friends cheer them on while they are doing it, peer pressuring them to do it.

Now, what would you say to someone who listens to Electronic music and takes it seriously?

Would you say something about me? because I take electronic music seriously?

I didn't think so.

It is people and their own personal choices that causes them to do things, like drugs, crimes etc etc.

EDIT: btw, could you perhaps change the title of this thread?

You talked about some people dying, and they are emos apparently, and the title says "SUCKED IN EMOS", that is basically saying sucked in to the emos that died.

Not very nice.

Thread title edited.

Suicide is a major cause of death for teens and young adults.  Especially males.  This is a serious issue that affects many families each week.  It is not a manifestation of one subculture.  It has been around for a very long time - long before emos were called emos, and unfortunately will be around when the word emo is oldschool .

We should be offering support to people who aren't coping - not pidgeon holing them as "emos" or assuming all emos are really suicidal - there wouldn't be too many around then would there?

Hate is a destructive emotion - one that can harm yourself as much as anyone.  To hate someone just because they belong to a certain group is prejudicial and ignorant.

Hmm .... Safety Comes First

I think it's a difficult thing to consider. I do not always offer help/support to those who are suicidal, nor do I ignore them and pretend they aren't there. They are people. I often find myself wondering if helping some suicidal people would be the wisest thing to do. Some of them (emo or not) are so far gone from reality and rational thought that getting involved with them might also endanger my own life. Those that I decide to offer help and support to are often approachable and listen to the things you tell them. Some of them might not want your help. Take for example, telling a person (who is clearly suicidal) that they are beautiful, unique, and have something special to contribute to this world/existence. But when you take that step they return with violent angry apathy for your attempt to show kindness. People can respond in a number of different ways. I would suggest that if you decide to offer help/support try to ascertain if they are violent and dangerous. Danger to yourself is not worth helping someone who is incapable of processing rational thoughts. Safety Comes first. It's a wonderful thing to show love and kindness; to listen and give careful attention to someone else's pain. If they show any sort of threat to your person then you must remove yourself from the danger first. If even after such a thing occurs and you still wish to help then I suggest helping through indirect methods. Get professionals counselors involved.

Hate cannot be defined in any one sentence. Hate is .... so very complicated because it can manifest in any environment or person. How we choose to defend against it might be one of humanity's greatest and most significant evolutionary achievments. I think it's important that we devote time every day to think on how to better understanding it. Thus far we know (for a fact) that hate is a secondary emotion. Underneath it lies buried something that led to its birth and conception. How to discover and excavate this might be a good place to continue our research yes?

I tend to make certain notes to myself regarding general human behaviour. Random notes at random times.

I remember that once a few years ago I got stuck even to this day to the idea that people are born with general traits.Something makes them good/bad , aggresive/friendly etc.

Me and my two brothers, for example, grew up in a harsh neighborhood with very bad kids, yet we ended up to be 'on the good side'.But, even if we faced partly the same problems, talking generaly, we also have very distinctive differences.

So it makes me think that these people have a general tendency since birth to be somewhat depressive and in the end suicidal.I for one was 3 years ago suicidal, and still am a bit.

The problem shouldn't be put the way you all people talk here :"Those emo stupid kids again going suicidal...".

As far as I see it, those kids with their birth pshycological markings found their 'comfort' in emo-style defined music and way of life. That doesn't mean , beacuse they have that apart tendency to be suicidal, to be excused. In no case this should be understood.I believe that suicide kids end up mainly beacuse two reasons and THIS IS WHAT YOU PEOPLE SHOULD TAKE IN CONSIDERATION: when trying to help that emo kid:
1.Its their fault for not being able to repugnate( 'freeze' ) those suicidal thoughts. I did it and I am still alive, ain't I? On this problem you can't directly attain to. I for one still find myself in moments of depression from time to time thinking about the "it would be much easier to just...".These thoughts just come involunterely.
2.Its society fault for trying to neglect a hard problem of the 21th century: kids immature analysis on very mature problems, like death.
Generally, people will try to ignore adolescents pshycological problems with a simple:"It's the age.. It will pass." Think about this when you treat your kid with indiference, but don't become a 'helicopter parent'.

The problem is, if we try to help these people, the typical emos will still and contemplate with taking their own lives.

It's no easy task.

Hmm... This is supposed to be a discussion between blame-the-music-and-not-the-parents-and-the-system people on one side and emos on the other side... I hate both so I'll just stay out of this.
I mean, I would, but then it wouldn't be fun, now would it?
I have something to say to both sides:
@ Emos
The world is a hellhole, yes. And most people who understand that think about suicide a lot. Which is completely wrong - instead of uniting and standing against those who made the world the way it is now (a big polluted unfair cesspit), you have suicidal thoughts (in some cases more than thoughts) and the idea of perhaps TRYING TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE instead of crying and masturbating on "My chemical romance" posters just can't appear in your small, teen, unthinking, drug-induced minds. Instead of doing your best to help the generations that are to come you take the easy way out - lying in your bed and doing nothing except listening to gay music.
@ Republicans and similar
You are so full of crap about how music destroys kids that even you started to believe it. All the "music and black colour is bad" speeches were created to turn your face from your true problems: senseless wars, destruction of the planet, and being incompetent and awful parents. You have allowed your brains to be scorched by propaganda so much that I don't even pity you anymore. Instead of, like I told the emos, trying to make this world less crappy, you just sink deeper and deeper in your own dung, senselessly banning your children music, clothes, comics and similar - deliberately closing your eyes to things that need fixing and literally pushing your children into oblivion and suicide. Geez, if my parents were like you, I'd probably kill myself too.

Ah.
For some reason I feel like some great weight has lift off my shoulders.

You could try and not blame the music, but the self-harm caused by the lyrics of emo music speaks for itself.

Though I do agree that parents should not be blamed. Most of them don't even know what the emo culture really is all about, nor about those depressing images on MySpace.

Damn, as I get close to deciding about getting one there's always a detracting factor.
