a combination between a turn-based strategy and a card-trading game. like in CTGs, you can put together "dekcs", which consist of creatures, spells, equipment and the like. but in the battle, you move on a tbs map and use your creatures in a tbs way.
its free to play with 6 different default sets, but for making your own sets(which is what the game is really all about), you gotta buy cards (with real money). but you can also trade cards with other players, so theres no need to buy like 500 cards until you get the one you were looking for.
a new expansion (= new cards and new maps) is coming out in a week.
a lovely indie game. made by a small company Octopi.

That would be awesome if it were free.
Rather having to earn new cards rather than paying for them.. that'd be mad fun.

with the expansion now released, they (imo) did beef up the free decks.
but anyway. of course a free (or open-source) game similar to this would be better. BUT. free games always run into problems about art. professional artists want to get paid, amateur charity art is not up to their level.

The starter packs aren't bad actually, I gave it a try today.
It was really fun, though extremely long, match went for over an hour then the guy just quit (kinda like H3 lol), and sometimes your turn runs out before you get to do everything..
But it would be so much better if you could just buy the game normally, at normal game price, then just have to earn the other cards through battle etc. That way you get more proud of your cards as they show skill rather than who has more money to splash at an online game 
The tactics part of it is good though, and I really like the graphics (the whole reason why I tried it in the first place) and even though at first it seems all complicated the battles themselves are pretty easy to go through with.

yea that would be better.
but now that so many people have bought cards, switching onto pay-for-game-not-for-cards system could really make them flip out

yeah. I spoke to some people there and they said that buying cards was pointless lol. I'm sure the pros like #1 ranked guy and stuff bought them all though.
and just having the decks you're given gives no customization or anything which is what would be cool about the game.
you should be able to mix and match with the different decks..

Damn this game is addictive haha.
I'm trying to get the hang of it, it can get annoying though when they wipe out your army with one spell (happened to me twice)
It's actually pretty similar to heros though, with the factions
Theres the:
K'thir, elves similar to Sylvan with trees and bears and the like,
Ironfist, which is basically Dwarves with humans, earth elementals
Forglar, similar to Fortress with weird little swamp creatures
Tundra; ice dwellers, yetis
Underdepths; like inferno, they are the fire devils and all that
Sundered Lands; dinosaur things :S i hate this team with their damn fire spell
Forsaken Wastes; like necropolis, undead, zombies, vampires
Shattered Peaks; weird mountain dwelling creatures like cyclopses...
And another thing is that you can get experience for your cards and they can go up levels if you win more battles, which is pretty cool

This game looks nice and all, but everytime I try to launch the game, I get this message:
"There was a problem connecting to the Pox Nora game server. Please check your network connection and try again. Make sure your network security policies permit connecting to Po Nora. If the problem presists, please check the Bugs and Troubleshooting forum at http://www.poxnora.com"
anyone know what's the problem?

umh sounds like some firewall thing. add www.poxnora.com to your trusted zone maybe?

look at the forums - almost everyone has an avatar. but you cannot get an avatar without owning any cards (last time i checked) and even many of those without avatars also have bought cards, just havent picked an avatar.

if they (Octopi) would let you also mix free decks, there wouldnt be that much reason for buying cards, no? they gotta earn from the game too, thus giving such features to the ones who pay.

underdepths and ironfist. i know averybody says UD is underpowered, and it.. kinda... is. at least against shattered peaks i thought like wtf am i doing, if i had picked IF and used a single earth elemental + righteous deflection (for those nasty voil screechers in SP sample decks), their sorry asses would have been kicked. but, UD is just kinda more fun to play. enemy has ranged? no problem, ive got a pincushion.
and i always, in all games, like the underused factions.

ironfist is pretty good (from what ive seen, im such a noob its embarassing) but im a bit like you i dont like playing the main faction, or the 'good' faction as such. all though the earth elementals are kickass!
i think that some of the spells are overpowered. like once i was against sundered lands and he cast this firestorm type thing and killed every single one of my units. uncluding some ones which were on full health. then what was i supposed to do? 
I like forsaken wastes though. I only have the starter decks, though I'm considering buying some packs..
And Kthir forest can be good as well, although the starter packs have like no decent spells. Their movement and range can be good though, I got schooled by a Kthir forest guy when he just swamped my shrine straight away because he could get around so quickly and had all the ranged units to shoot it to pieces

did he have Dragon Skulls? (theyre relics) they add 50% to all fire damage vs creatures, which can bring quite a damage with a firestorm. you gotta use some cheap&fast, or better yet, stealthy unit and get around the main battlefield to near his shrine, then if you have some AoE damage spell of your own, cast it on the Skulls and if they dont destruct right away, attack them with that fast unit of yours. all relics have low hp - and without skulls, firestorm isnt THAT bad.
exactly the same thing works for the usual ST decks, too, who have Ice Shards.
but SL sample deck hasnt got dragon skulls. playing with my sample decks against non-sample-decks i almost always lose too. i still havent bought any cards :/ and i wont, before im done with the exams. too much distraction otherwise.

This guy did this really cheap tactic to me.
Where you create the game settings
Starting Nora: 75
Nora Accrual: 45
Shrine Health: 20
Reveals: 10
Turn: Creator First
Map: Forsaken Wastes
Then you choose sundered lands. Remember this is in Training Grounds so only sample decks.
At the start you reveal 10 cards and put out the Croconaw and the Diamondhide, if possible.
Send one on either side going wide towards their base. If they send troops at you they can only intercept one while the other will eventually get to their shrine; you can use the Diamondhide to stun their champions and Hatchling Season to slow them down.
Play Ravager and Draksar Archer as you can, sending them straight to the opposing shrine. When one of your dragons gets to the the shrine attack it and cast Firestorm and Tornado asap and you'll take their Shrine down, if all goes well, in about 8 turns. 
It's surprising how well it works I tried it out myself lol.

yup, ive fallen for that one myself.
most people consider it cheating - 20 starting hp shrines gives a huge advantage to the starter. but, if youve fallen for it once, youll know not to join any 20hp games ever again. and prechosen maps go about the same way - forglar deck on forglar map really roxorz the boxorz of any other faction.
