Just as Swamplord mentioned many of the maps had an underlying sense of humour. You may remember this sign: 'This boat belongs to Yog. You not touch, touch and die!' Or the 'thinking hurts too much' line!
A quest that said 'My dog ate my sword of hellfire and I'm not leaving without a replacement!' The vampires that asked for blood type O!!! I wonder what funny parts you remember, I would like you guys to give it a shot!

A part where shiny graphics messes with functionality is the underground and the map editor. In the underground the extra stalactites, twists and turns do not allow for easy navigation and many objects are unclickable until you rotate the map to find the exact same spot.
It is not so hard, especially as I use Ctrl and the arrow keys constantly but it took a while to get used to it and after all the heroes series was always known for being user-friendly. Anybody could just give it ago and have no problems with moving around.
That's what is missing, simplicity coupled with efficiency all the while enriched with good art and humour. And we have good art, true. However the graphics are in a showoff manner which would be fine as long as they did not affect the gameplay. They do.
Not only because you have to move around the camera but because of the effect they have on the map editor. Have you tried to make a big map cluttered with lots of items and locations? If you do you'll remember me, it will get too slow to the point of testing your patience...My drift is that you can always use something beautiful and elegant yet not clash with the game itself even if only at times.

Battle of the Sexes from HoMM III. That was funny.

The map editor simply is not fun to use and not as easy to navigate either.

I agree completely.

I still can't understand it.

Also, from HoMM 2, a map where, as the knight, you started out fully developed, and there was a message saying."This time you won't have to use those smelly peasants. Even the gods can't stand them."

In Rise of the Phoenix(I think) because of the appearance of the elusive phoenix after so many years you create a demand for phoenixmon dolls and it turns out profitable! That one had me laughing!
