Rogue, I'm glad to finaly see a mature and reasonable post from you. This is more what I expect from a moderator. Anyway to address your points.

On the driving force of games in the home computer market

1)Yes of course computer games are not a driving force in computers for the business market. We were talking about the home computer market. The business market already has plenty of reasons to use microsoft without games.

2)Yes people like your sister don't care about games. They also are probably quite happy with whatever computer they have access to, no matter how old it is. They certainly aren't going to buy a new computer every 3 or so years like the average gamer. One of the big reasons why games drive the market so much is because gamers need to keep upgrading and buying new machines to keep up with their games. I'm not saying I like it, but it's the truth.

3) Saying all of the non cross platform games suck because you don't like them is silly. How many of them have you actualy tried? It's true that the massive sellers are usualy cross platform because it's usualy profitable for them. But just because something is not a massive seller doesn't mean it sucks. Remember Linux isn't exactly a massive celler either.

On using non standard software for companies

1) Almost every company has clients or people they went to send information to who are not associated with them. Even non profit companies like mine. If your company is only a client they are unlikely to be paying their bills. Now I'm sure there are exceptions out there, and these rare exceptions do actualy have the liberty to use unusual programs if they are willing to train all their employees to use them. These are hardly the rule though.

2) The backwards compatibility between older and newer versions of Word is hardly broken. Usualy you will have no problems. And asking people to save in Word 97 format (not usualy necesary) is hardly an unreasonable request. Asking them to install a whole new software program and train all their people on how to use it however is.

On Business knowledge

It's fine to say you don't have business experience but you still have some idea how things work. It's not fine to lash out at me and insult me for pointing out your lack of experience. And why are you saying I'm making assumptions about you? You are the one who was calling me a hard headed corporate machine member without having any clue what you are talking about. And being completely wrong about it as well. All I did was point out something which you admited to be true. I didn't brag about being right, I simply defended myself against your baseless and immature insult.

On reading posts

If I write many times (two of them specificaly adressed to you) that I am sure non microsoft users are quite happy with their programs and they work quite well for them, and you write that I don't think non microsoft users are happy with their programs, then it's quite obvious you are not reading my posts. Or at least you were not, you seem to be making some effort at least now.

On insults

You complain that I talk about you insulting me on a public board. Well you insulted me on a public board and in this very thread. If you don't want people to complain publicly, don't insult them publicly.

Now I'm mad...

THIS IS CALLED BLACKMAIL...

...Konqueror, Mozilla, Opera and all the other browsers are way better than IE... faster, more stable... why should i be forced to use IE just to be able to visit some lousy MSN site? I say NO...

BUT, as the good ol' /. says... just change the ID tag and you're in.... I still think that there is nothing of importance (for me) in a MSN site...

Yeah that is pretty annoying, but it's fairly minor compared to other things like this that Microsoft have done. Chances are you don't at all about logging on to that MSN site, but I've always noticed other more annoying (but less obvious) problems trying to connect to the gaming zone with netscape. Granted I do prefer IE to Netscape anyway, but it's still annoying.

So I wouldn't say "It has begun" but more "It has continued". Not that this is a good thing.

hehe, well as I said before my intention was never to say Microsoft was a great company, my intention was simply to tell you the way things are and why they have the power they have. If you fail to understand how powerful they are and how much of a hold they have on the market, you have no chance of competing against them. And that's certainly not the only bad thing I have said against microsoft.

Anyway like I said before this isn't "just the begninning" this is the continuation of a trend that's been going on for years. Nothing they have just done is any different then lots of stuff they have done already.

I know of their power - but most of it is based on perception, intimidation, and ignorance.

No, I'm not calling anybody names, but MS stays in power because most people don't care or even know that Microsoft isn't the be-all and end-all of software.

Well, I figured I'd add my voice to the word processor argument.  I've used Wordperfect for years now, and I have to say that the most recent version of Wordperfect is far better than the most recent version of Word (God bless the shadow cursor).  Plus they have a better equation editor which is really nice for physical chemistry...  That said, Corel's spreadsheet sucks, so I do use Excel.  Use Mozilla for internet, because it's better than explorer or regular navigator.
The way I figure it, I get the best of all worlds.  Well, except for the operating system world since I like the work computers (macs) much better than my windows machine, and my friends' Linux boxes seem to be a lot more stable than mine, but at least I don't have to restart whenever I want to play games...

By fooling yourself into thinking that their power is all based on misconception and ignorance you fall afoul of their real power. Their true power is based on control and compatibility.

The only surefire way to defeat them would be to come up with a competing program that could still run windows software (well I guess the software would have to be good as well). Then they would lose all their control over making people use their software if they want to use what is out there.

Anything else and it will be a tough uphill battle trying to get people to take your program seriously and write software for it. People won't use your OS unless it supports most software, and software won't support your OS unless a lot of people use it. And you will almost be competing more against the other non windows programs then you will be against microsoft.

Now Macintosh is making a nice little come back, and someday they might be able to fight the uphill battle enough to be a real threat to Microsoft. It was brilliant marketing on their part to finaly realize that the main strength of their computer is how easy it is for the computer illeterate to use, and to focus on the computer illeterate in their ad campaings and in their release of the imac. Unlike Linux, Mac users actualy make up a not completely insignificant percentage of computer users. They are still shunned in the business world (except by artists and a few others), but that's not where they are targeting.

Saying it's impossible to compete without windows compatibility is incorrect - but you are right that it is very difficult.

Mac OS is not a real threat to Microsoft, and I never expect them to have majority, but I think it is feasible for Apple to get Mac OS X up to around 15-20% if they really play their cards right.

They are broadening their appeal.  The regained ground they lost in Education. They are are still popular among digital artists. They are considered the best for editing digital video with the G4+Final Cut Pro combination.  They are even open to new corporate markets they weren't in before because of the Unix foundation of OS X.

The Mac game market is still small - but it's much much larger than it was in, say, 1997.

The current slaughter going on in the PC industry also helps Apple, because now more stores have more shelf space for apple's computers. I guess Apple and Dell are the only two major PC makers actually showing a profit at the end of the September quarter. Apple's retail store strategy is also good, because it opens people's eyes to how much macintosh software is available - and that is a big selling point. A lot of people don't realize you can get MS Office for macintosh, and a lot of people don't realize how many Mac games are really available.

Apple needs to improve people's perception of them, because perception is what it's all about.

also, you underestimate how powerful I think Microsoft is. I know what they can do with what they have in place right now.

I also know they probably don't want apple dead. They make money on Mac OS software (they're actually spending $6 million advertising Office v.X, so there must be some money to be made in the mac market). They also like apple's presence because then they can claim there is competition in the market. Plus they use the mac as a testing grounds for a lot of new office features that are later incorporated into the windows versions if they are popular.

Of course, they also don't want Apple's marketshare to get too big, but that won't happen unless Apple licenses out the OS somewhere down the road.

Yeah I'd say Mac is much more likely to be a real competitor to Windows then Linux is. Linux is really just starting from ground zero, while Mac already has a good following of users and software. And the recent marketing campaigns for it, and growth show that it is once again in good hands.

Like you said, Microsoft certainly doesn't want to destroy macs, they even have given economic support to them because they didn't want them to go under. It's even possible that Macintosh would no longer still be around without their help. Not that I'm saying they did it for altruistic reasons or anything, lol.

I could easily see mac getting up to 15% of the home computer market. In the business world it will always be a nice computer, used by artists and a few others who can really benefit from it's use. Hard to say what percentage it can make in the business world since I don't know what percentage these people make up.

Never had these problems, but lets these possibilities(ordered by simplicicty):

1) Crack it.

2) Reinstall the WinXP.

3) Get a activation key and search for a program that can write it in the registry(a crack).

4) Boot from another partition and delete the Windows folder. Reinstall WinXp after.

5) Format.

Maybe there are easier ways, but since I haven't had this problem, I don't know exactly what you have to do.

In my opinion, Windows XP is a good operating system. It is quite stable, quick and has a good interface. But from ideological point of view, this all really becomes quite bad. I'm actually a fan of Microsoft products (a very strange fact), but I think I'm going to move to Linux in the nearest time. Lately I have been using Linux for long enough time to get rather familiar with it as a user.
