I think not, they are campaign objects to spice things up.

Patch location
Maybe you should try www.patches-scrolls.de, or www.gamershell.com. Both are very good sites, from where you can download the patch, but I suggest Patches Scrolls, as that is not as loaded as Gamer's Hell.

Why is everyone whining about the new Necromancy system? Sure, the pool only lasts for one major battle a week, but the troops you can raise definitely equal the amount of skeletons you'd get with the old system, unless a heavy fighting week. And mark of the necromancer is a nice new ability for pretty much every type of necromancer.
Was quite a nasty surprise in the Sylvan campaign when the necros got one of my garrisons and since the hero had the whole pool on his own, he was able to compensate most of the loses he had fighting the rather considerable garrison unit stacks. Definitely better than getting like 100 skeletons raised...

I agree. This way, Necromancers can get quite some nice creatures (IMO the system is (much) better than in H4), and thre restriction posed by the amount of Dark Energy means they aren't overpowered.

I've only played under patch 1.5, so don't know how it was before. I do think that it is reasonable system. In H4, I would always take necro characters and then dominate by using their ability to raise vampires until they were practically invulnerable. I still thing that they are one of the stronger races, but need to be managed more.
When I play, I refuse anything except my favored creatures -- skeleton and liches. Don't waste the dark energy points on something that is useless to me in most fights -- e.g. zombies and ghosts.

that's pretty much the idea, yes. The only complication that might arise is that you might want to save some neutral unit stacks for next week because you could raise some nice creatures from them.
That said, you can still go nuts on any undead, mechanical or elemental stacks or anything that turns into units you can live without.
